While awaiting for the May 15, 2019 auction sale of yet another "Double Elvis" by Andy Warhol,this time at NY's Christie's , I thought it interesting to list the 35 best selling Warhols whose value is known. either from data provided by auction houses or from private sales.

The "Double Elvis" to be sold on May 15, whose estimate ranges from US$50 to US$70 million, will surely land inside the top 10.

Each can be seen by just typing the title of the painting preceded by the word Warhol in a google image search engine. For example "Warhol Race Riot"

Me either, an expert as I am on Velazquez, Van Gogh, Durer, etc, but then I tried to figure it out, so i looked at the number of books which have been written about him. Almost one thousand. Then, I found out that there is interest of him in 100 different languages

When you are the first at doing something BIG, even if half the world dislikes what you do, and produce, you are a part of history. I know 1,000 people who like Coca Cola, and 1,000 who dont. but Coke is Coke. Same with Elvis. And same with Warhol. And that is why the world's top art collectors have paid those prices. Notice how of the top 5 sellers, two are focussed on Elvis. One is hanging at the Palace of the ruler of Qatar, and the other at the San Francisco MOMA.

The one in San Francisco, was the subject of the oddest accident in the history of any museum. A man walked by past it, was shaken, and fell on top of the lower part of it. It was a year until they fixed it. He put his elbow on it.

The Warhol Elvis connexion is so advanced in the world of high art, that many great pop artists name their works because of it. For example, Fred Koons "Triple Elvis" has nothing to do with Elvis, except for the title, Triple Elvis. It sold for 9.7 million.

Then, this guy, George Condo, who is one of the top artists today unveiled his "Double Elvis" at the Venice Biennal Art Show just two days ago. Look at this 18 x22 feet beast. I can see any tycoon's building in New York,or in Chicago going for it one day, at an auction, for their lobby.

The resuts are in. It sold for US$53 million, the highest ever paid for a "Double Elvis" (there are 22 of them, all different), thus landing in the #12 position of all Warhols ever sold, as seen below. Note: Of the top 20, Elvis has the more entries (5), and of the top 38 (all selling in excess of US$10m, also the most entries, with 6)

Bloomberg may have or may have not noticed it, but as far as work by Andy Warhol, it was Elvis who did it back to back for him, last year at US$37 million, this year at US$53 million.

Here are four DIFFERENT "Triple Elvis" by Warhol.


1) The first is in Italy. What beauty...

2) Now, compare that one with the US$81.9 million "Triple Elvis" given by its owners Doris y Donald Fisher,to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The images are further apart.

3) Then, there is the "Triple Elvis" at the Virginia Museum, in Richmond, here seen with its author, before it was bought by Sydney y Frances Lewis, who gifted it to the Museum. It is the only known colour photo of Warhol standing next to a "Triple Elvis" . The images are a bit closer on this one vis a vis #2 above

4) And my favourite, the one at the NY MET, seen by 7 million yearly since 2007 and counting. It looks like a "Double Elvis", but look closely.

Now, when Dylan goes to the NY MOMA, and he sees this, what could his reaction be, when he knows that was HIS painting. Not any other Double Elvis, This one, which he exchaged in 1965 for US$300 dollars and a couch.

Elvis is everywhere, whether people understand it or not. Here is the Warhol "Triple Elvis" normally located at the Saatch Gallery, en London, and currently loaned to the SF MOMA. It should NOT be confused with the "Triple Elvis" for which a couple of billionaires ( the husband and wife pair of Donald and Doris Fisher ), paid US$81.9 million in 2014 (now worth US$86.7 million). That one, a week after the couple allowed it to go on display at this same SF MOMA , in 2015, was the subject of an unheard of type of incident, namely when a tourist looked at it, he then fell and elbowed it, so it had to be repaired. The tourist was unhurt. LOL

Whoever buys this car, either a collector or a museum, can claim that it was driven by Elvis in both a forward and reverse motion, and that amongst its passengers one could count a future nun who is now a prioress at a Roman Catholic Benedictine clauster, in CT, and whose life was the subject of an Oscar nominated short.

When she made that movie with Elvis, in 1957, her mom's sister was married to Mario Lanza, who Elvis admired tremendously and who would, in less than 30 months, succumb to the strangest of deaths.

The scene where she and Elvis are seated in the car, looking at a beautiful surrouding was filmed at a place which almost 30 years later would be purchased by the then sitting President of the USA, President Reagan for US$485,000 (1985 dollars).- The place became more know after THAT, but it was always called "Rancho del Cielo" even when Ms. Hart and Elvis shot that lovely scene there.

That car has some history but would it end as this other Elvis related roadster, namely being the jewel in the crown of, say, Italy's top concours d'ellegance car show, and as recently as this year?
