Originally recorded in 1959 with slightly different lyrics by Marvin Rainwater under the title “The Pale Faced Indian” (listen here: ), this John D. Loudermilk composition would achieve its greatest U.S. fame via the 1971 chart-topper by The Raiders. Don Fardon was an English performer whose version of the song would purportedly reach the one-million worldwide sales mark after becoming a top-5 hit in the UK and Australia two years after its appearance on the U.S. charts.

Pop Chart Peaks: Record World 18, Cash Box 19, Billboard 20 - 1970 UK Peaks: 1 (MM & TP/MN), 2 (NME), 3 (BMRB)

Transferred from mono 45 single GNP Crescendo 405 - (The Lament Of The Cherokee) Indian Reservation (Loudermilk) by Don Fardon, produced Miki Dallon

18 Yellow Roses (Darin) by Bobby Darin, conducted by Jack Nitzche

In 1963 Bobby charted with a handful of interesting singles in which he appeared sometimes to be emulating the vocal styles of other popular singers and/or writing new songs which were inspired by those others’ hit records (Ray Charles, Steve Lawrence, Bobby Vee among them).
This was his ‘Marty Robbins’ (Marty himself also recorded the song some years later)

Pop Chart Peaks: Billboard & Music Vendor 10, Cash Box 12

let's now bring in some instrumentals 45's mono mix.

That'll ensure some variety to the spirit of the topic AYE

Good selections from 1968 which seemed to be a heavy instrumental year. Here's Cliff Nobles and Co. with "The Horse."

Ironically, "The Horse" was the instrumental backing tracking of the intended A-side "Love Is All Right." Cliff only appears on the A-side!

And another instrumental hit from early 1968 which was a Top 40 hit in the U.S.

Soul Coaxing (Ame Caline) by Raymond Lefevre & his Orchestra

This is a pretty neat instrumental with a good turn-around change.

"Don't Stop" sounds cool in mono :D

The vocals, drums, and piano really jump out on this HIT MONO MIX! The mono mix not only featured boosted levels of certain aspects of the song, but was mixed much louder than the stereo mix. This was intentional, so that the song would grab your attention when it was played on AM Top 40 stations of the era. All commercial 45's of this single were of the stereo mix. The HIT MONO MIX was available only as a promo single issued to radio stations for broadcast on AM radio.
Debuted 7/77
#1 Cash Box; #3 Hot 100; #3 R&B

This is the original HIT MONO MIX released on Warner Brothers WB-8413 when this was a HUGE hit on AM and FM Top 40 stations in the summer and fall of '77.

- written and upload is by Brian Richmond, you must examine his channel.

Note: This is a stereo fold-down according to the uploader -

Pink Floyd - Money on Mono Radio Station Open Reel DJ Edit Tape, 1973 Capitol Harvest Records.

Track was taken from a AM Radio Station, DJ Edit, Mono Mix, Reel To Reel Tape and was put together for the station on November 18, 1979. The tape is 3M Classic, CL-7R120 on 7 inch reel, running at 7.5 I.P.S. and transferred to home recorded CD some years back. The mono mix is unique in the way it was processed from stereo fold down for mono AM playback.

45 single issued on Decca 32018 - Coming On Strong (David Wilkins) by Brenda Lee.

This great single was Brenda’s final one to crack the top 25 on any of the national ‘pop’ charts, but she would discover consistant new success in the Country Music market beginning in 1973,

Pop Chart Peaks: Record World 9, Billboard 11, Cash Box 18.

Good to hear this as a full song with extra verses!

Big Brother & The Holding Company - Down on Me (mono 45)

Janis Joplin’s re-working of the old freedom song, released on the Mainstream label, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 the same week as the group’s Columbia single “Piece Of My Heart.” The timing on the label is incorrect, as this post is a transfer from the common 45 single release.

Transferred from mono 45 single Mainstream 662 - Down On Me (arr: Joplin) by Big Brother and The Holding Company.

Pop Chart Peaks: Billboard 43, Cash Box 48, Record World 56.
