Listened to disc 2 last night the 'bare sounding' Gospel & Christmas songs.Pretty good.. a few weaker songs stood as sounding no better than 'Album fillers' but the Red West song "Holly Leaves and Christmas Trees was an absolute MASTERPIECE!
Good shout out, terrific cut and remix.

I've just installed this system in my home office.

Image

I gave it a quick listen last night with a random Johnny Cash CD. The sound blew me away. Tomorrow morning, dark and early (I can't sleep late to save my life), I'll be listening to the rest of my Elvis '71 Nashville set through my headphones.

Maxwell House coffee will never taste as good as it will tomorrow morning. Elvis will probably sound pretty good, too.
Nice system, Rob! Is that a Yamaha?

YDKM wrote:Just managed to listen to disc #4 (couple of unreleased takes, but most are outakes from past releases) A really good disc bringing decent outakes enjoyed over past 25 years together with sincere Gospel and solid xmas outakes. Also on these outakes it seems better as vocal accompyment with him and not like disc #3 .So yes in summary i can say this :-
Excellent value set @ A $15 / disc
Mixed satisfaction and original tracks probably should have been presented with the overdubs as then the outakes would have contrasted better/more.
Obviously less brilliant than the Nashville 1970 set, but i give it a 8/10 mark which considering everything is "Good". Well worth buying and i was not too bothered by either booklet mistakes or sometimes too much extra studio chat.Glad others have explained to me the reasons for the first track on disc #1 track start, but anyhow i dislike all 1971/1972 versions of "The First Time" and yet i love the 1973/1974 'live' versions with extra verse! With the 21st August 1974 M/S version being my absolute favourite version- also annoying that for the sake of 'completeness' i had to get hold of the two Duet versions (taken from acetates) when in actual fact their is enough space left on the first two discs to have been completed with those versions! Also live versions from 1976/77 of Early Morning rain are vastly superior to the 'Bland' studio version. My Way (could NEVER have been released during Elvis's lifetime) was far exceeded by 'live' 1972-1977 versions!
Really all these 1971 sessions produced enough tracks for a decent Gospel and Christmas albums, but only half of a 'Folk' Album and so those tracks got spread around in an un satisfactory way, but without additional recorded songs could never have made a 3rd album anyhow.
Many varying and uneven opinions on this set which reflect the uneven material. The outtakes don’t yield anything surprising.

Compared to the 1970 Nashville sessions these “71 sessions had to be a disappointment at the time, resulting in;

- a poorly mixed, mediocre Christmas Album

- a Gospel album that didn’t reach the heights of the previous two despite its Grammy win

- several failed, unspectacular singles

- an unfinished folk/pop album.

By the time Burning Love came along the following year Elvis had all but disappeared from the charts,

Yes the Gospel album was just about "ok", the Christmas album similar (with some brilliant tracks and some awful tracks and rest 'average') and as for the left over songs being on Elvis 'now' and a filler on the 'Fool' Album no wonder Album sales hit an all time low of just 300,000 copies- the public are not stupid and do not buy when the word gets around about less than good albums

You should sell that one. It will command quite a premium to a collector.

I'm quite happy to insult the people involved, because putting out such a shoddy package with absolutely mindless decisions taken and a booklet full of typos and misinformation is an insult to us when we pay £34 for it.
I only paid 16.99 euros, including postage!. Bye for now :smt006.

Yeah, Mike, seen that offer too but still refused to order it. Did I already mention I enjoy the Pot Luck Sessions set more than the 71 outcome?

If you read the review of this set in the new issue of Elvis: The Man & His Music you'd be forgiven for thinking that even that was too much to pay for something that's not been given the care and attention that it deserved.

well its obvious to me that paying just A$60 for a 4 disc set is EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY....however you look at it. My 'pot luck' + 'southbound' sets were posted to me on 4th Dec so just maybe i get them as a Christmas Present? but yes those sets cost me about A$40/ disc.....so completely EXPENSIVE compared to 'back in Nashville' by a massive marjin! :?

still waiting on my set.
Something went wrong with the shipping and now they're investigating.
Takes a long time.

Pfff. I suggested they send me a replacement set. Then at least I can start enjoying it.
If it arrives double I'll send it back.

It is a Yamaha and it's pretty nice. The first thing I listened to were the '71 Nashville sessions. When I sat down and put on my Bose headphones, I had to keep looking around to make sure Elvis and the guys weren't right there in the room with me.

I felt so silly, but then I'd do it again.

I've always liked the gospel album but never been a fan of The Wonderful World of Christmas.
It feels half hearted, even depressing at times.Merry Christmas Baby being the exception.
With that in mind plus so much mediocre filler material this set was never going to compare with the previous set and some of the production decisions only exacerbate that.

"Walking in a Winter Wonderland" is the most depressing track on there...

I'll be the minority, because I've liked this Christmas album from the first time I heard it decades ago.

It gets played at least once every year.

The Christmas tracks are among the rare exceptions where removal of overdubbed backing vocals reveal sub par performances by Elvis. It's a shame the Imperials weren't in the studio with him during those sessions.
