It's too late to expect anyone to be held to account. Ernst has got away with any number of wide-ranging issues over the last fifteen years or so. And doesn't seem to give a toss. He must know about the issues with the glue from the last release and the one before, and the one before that. News must filter down, as I doubt he lives in a cave with no internet.

"Ernst has got away with any number of wide-ranging issues over the last fifteen years . . . "

Many of us wonder if you post such bitter, ignorant poppycock just to get attention.

It must be lonely in your cave with no internet.
Carry on avoiding the substance of the post.

I guess the fundamental question for those who don't like Elvis's performance is, what should he have been doing with this track? And if he supposedly didn't like the song why was Elvis devoting 10 takes to it anyway? If I didn't like a track I'd either not do it at all or bash if off quick and move on to the next tune.
I’ve always thought he sounded bored out of his mind. Very listless. Under the influence maybe.

What could he have done? A more committed, energetic performance.

But, we know he was not interested in recording the standards; Noel, Bells or this. It was a contract commitment to get it done, the last of his three albums for 1971, for his contract - with minimal effort.

There's not much I can add to this topic that hasn't already been discussed, but for me it's some of the glaring, discerning of mixing choices made by Matt Ross-Spang.

Whatever happened to the drum track on Merry Christmas Baby is beyond me. Maybe Matt fell asleep at the wheel, but I'll stay away from this version forever.

The best thing about this set, for me, is the inclusion of The Lord's Prayer, Lady Madonna and I Shall Be Released and, for me, The ad lib of the one liner of I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.

Just phenomenal.

Yes, I have 2 sets and each set came with 2 completely destroyed disks. The packaging just plain sucks. And I am highly disappointed with the L p's.

I sincerely hope that for next year's, Elvis on Tour, releases, something will be done to lessen that problem.

Well, we have no real idea of what those ten takes consist of. We know 10 was the master. #7 was a long false start. #8 is marked down on Keith's site as a rehearsal. Prior to #7, nothing has been released as the tape is lost. So it could be that in those ten takes he recorded maybe two or three full tries at the song at best.

Remember that there were 28 takes of Goin' Home (numbered to 30, but 26 is called as 28, and so on). And we have all heard that session and how Elvis behaved in it. 6 of those 28 takes we have no evidence of. Of the remaining 22 takes, only 6 are complete takes. The rest is Elvis fooling around or false starts.

My point here is that having takes numbered up to ten means nothing when it comes to evidence with regards to Elvis's commitment (or otherwise) to a song.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the rock-lite arrangement of Winter Wonderland, but the only moment that Elvis sounds engaged is during the bluesy coda - and even then he's hardly giving his all. If he didn't like the song, he should have recorded something different. Nobody put a gun to his head (although there was one handy).

There is, as mentioned earlier, aural proof of Elvis saying he "hated" it. What came of never singing another song he didn't believe in? It's not like there is/was a shortage of Christmas songs. But it's clear Elvis had no interest in the project. The next thing he did after take 10 was 12 minutes of Don't Think Twice. The fact that he bothered to learn a bunch of brand new original songs for the project is a miracle.

Has anyone heard anything about an OT package for 2022 yet. I'm presuming April would be the obvious release month?

My understanding is November 2022 just like the previous two sets in November. That would tie in with the 50th anniversary release of the movie an will also be in line with Warner's re-issue of the movie.

Just keep an open mind that Sony and FTD could still change things around - mainstream might be brought forward to say August…depends on what their plans are for the 50th of Aloha too, if of course they have any plans for a physical release on mainstream. They might keep it to FTD with a big book. They move in mysterious ways

I can't remember hearing the one liner of I Want You, I Need You, I Love You.
Where can I find this on the 70's boxset?

It's not on there. It was released unofficially on one of the "Unedited Masters" releases by Venus.

It's at the end of take 1 of "(That's What You Get) For Loving Me" on CD3 of the Elvis Back In Nashville set. The song is obviously on his mind as he sings "make me thrill" before the take.

Well after reading "The Man & Misic #134" i can only say i fully agree with Paul Richardsons review and criticisms!
Taking away the original released versions mixed on fisc 1 was awful and also the drliberate ommision of the two duet versions of "The First Time" i myself had to source from the Acetate released versions for the sake of completeness.

The two duet versions of "The First Time" - they couldn’t put on the set what the don’t have. The tape with takes 1-10 is missing.

Yes, those are from Acetate sources. Sony/RCA don’t possess the tape reels that have takes 1-10.
