Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
I think this new set is interesting and I will get it. Will I prefer it over what I already have? I will reserve judgement on that. One might ask (as some have already expressed in this thread) "Why are they releasing un-dubbed masters in this way?" well, un-dubbed seems to be the latest phase en-vogue for re-packaging and re-selling the same material again to the fans and the public. In order to keep making money from what Elvis left us they have to keep coming up with new incentives to drive the sales. This whole un-dubbed strategy is the latest way to keep milking the cow.
Next phase - mono to stereo? perhaps there is a lot they could do here, and it is not unprecedented as we all remember "electronically re-processed for stereo" releases.

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
I have really enjoyed the Nashville 70 and 71 box sets containing the undubbed masters (and outtakes) and will probably pick this set up too, even though I would much preferred it without the omissions. However, given the amount of money the 1969 to 76 studio catalogue, must have made RCA/Sony in the ensuing years, I do find it amazing that the majority of these masters have never received a proper remix. The last major mixing work (on some of the masters) seems to have been done in 87 for the Memphis record and the mid 1990s for the 70’s box set!
Surely most casual listeners are going to want to hear the originally released versions and these can definitely be made to sound better!

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
How many remixes of the Memphis show do we really need? As for a Legacy release, I would think that the casual buyer would prefer the originals, remixed for, hopefully, the better. That said: I'm actually fine with the originals as they are!

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
If I had to answer your question I should use some dialectic artifact: as many as it takes to do it right. For instance, if you take Aloha’s recent remix, I wouldn’t need any other mix. But you made a point.bajo wrote:How many remixes of the Memphis show do we really need? Regarding Memphis, I can’t take into account the original mix as it’s good but incomplete. Of the (nearly ) complete ones, my choice would be the FTD, as it seems they followed the purpose to make us feel in the arena.

The thing is for me, If FTD release any more session sets (Jungle Room or Stax), then we will get these undubbed master's then too? Probably uncut.

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
Given there have been much bigger multi-disc sets at retail over the last decade, I'm not sure why they would have been curtailed to five CDs int the first place. But it seems to me that this is a similar scenario to the 60CD set - the number of discs was arbitarily decided upon before anyone worked out how the material might fit on them. And surely the lack of unreleased material is going to turn off many fans anyway? Given the sound quality of the soundboards from the March tour, they might have been better adding an extra disc with an unreleased show on it just to force the hand of fans to buy it.'mmoie wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2024 12:13 am100 percent this should have happened.TheKingOfMusicEP wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 9:00 pmThey would have made better one more CD and we would have something completeMysteryTrain wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 9:00 pmThese tracks seem to be missing from the American Sound Sessions:colonel snow wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 8:23 pmIn a quick view to the tracklist I’ve not discovered unreleased tracks.

The set didn't make much sense when it was rumoured - and it makes even less sense now it's been announced.

Agreed, the complete show has never been available in good sound on a mainstream platform.frus75 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 11:51 pmIf I had to answer your question I should use some dialectic artifact: as many as it takes to do it right. The dull, dry, bass-less Legacy mix should be edited from the catalogue.
It seems the new mix is more open, much closer to the FTD concert sound.
And a little less tambourine, a little more drums.

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
But these are remixed masters. Would they do them again? Maybe, maybe not. I have to stay open minded. I bought vol. 1 of the Nashville set but passed on vol. 2. It didn’t interest me. it is on my Amazon music but I never listen to it.

Last time I checked, the finished “Masters” weren’t included on the FTD American Sound set. Unless, of course, there’s a bonus disk that was snuck into the set and I missed it?!kanishknishar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 18, 2024 4:07 pmWasn't that covered also in the American Sound 1969 box?

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
I Believe this set contains UNDUBBED masters, not remixed masters, so I'm thinking they would have to be part of any future session sets anyway. The Memphis show has been issued so many times now, therefore they should have included the missing studio cuts instead. imo.

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
i bought both the Nashville box sets, played them a few times and then went back to the original albums as i suspect most people do and will do with this incomplete Memphis release.
no more soundboards for me either.

As was my pattern on both Nashville releases - I will purchase the vinyl and stream the 5cd set.
It's 800 miles from my house to Graceland, but I'm always up for making the trip!

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
It's a relevant show for mainstream fans, and still unavailable in complete form, in great sound (FTD excluded)
By re-releasing, Ernst basically acknowledges the former Legacy mix sucked.

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
Nothing to do with fan exploitation then. Hey let’s do another sound tweak and they’ll buy it again. Or perhaps the 2014 version was hyped as a remix so that fans would buy that but they didn’t tell us how good or bad the remix was going to be and they knew in 10 years time, another anniversary was due up, along with another the opportunity of another remix. I bet there is already another pencilled in for 2034 on the 60th anniversary.

Re: Elvis Presley: Memphis (Box Set)
That's interesting. So you prefer the finished masters to the undubbed versions?
What about earlier FTD releases? They didn't sound good?
