Disappointed there is no improvement on the bluray/dvd but certainly not surprised as I was expectng they would use the dvd and just put s bluray logo on it to fool people.
Especially since we saw some good upscale efforts on YT, made by fans..

Yes the Ultimate Experience Aloha is my favorite, much better than STAR and the officially released 40th widescreen dvd release.
No improvments in upcoming bluray is as expected…a great shame.

emjel, did you not buy the 40th Anniversary DVD ? Its an official release. (I think)

Picture quality was great and lots of new angles shown..only drawback for me was some of the "special effects" were over used and cheap looking.
I bought the deluxe release that came out in 2004 which from memory was the same time as the deluxe ‘68 Special came out and was put out via Sony/EPE. That gave me everything I needed for this show and no idea if this latest release from Star is a legal or illegal copy of the one that came out for the 40th.
The STAR release is a boot...
Thanks - And that’s how these companies can offer these things at attractive prices as they don’t pay royalties and other legal fees which Sony are required to do. As I explained to @ mmoie, doing additional work like attempting to clean up the image and syncing the footage to the newly remixed FTD audio, costs time and money, which just pushes the price up to the consumer and is likely to go over the price line which non collectors and probably many fans who bought the FTD release, would be willing to pay. I decided to order it because I had a £10 Amazon voucher so it only cost me £17.
I think that with no improvement in picture and sound a lot of Elvis Fans wont bother to purchase as they already have the DVD which is the same as the Blu Ray in quality
So Sony / EPE loose out that way

Hi,

I recently received an advance copy of the set and these are my first impressions.

The original album is the same as on the FTD and the rehearsal show is remixed/remastered and sounds really good. Bonus material, the after-show recordings, are as on the FTD release.

Nice to have both concerts and the after-show recordings on one disc but to my ears and eyes the blu-ray is the same as the DVD and there is no improvement 🙁

Packaging/booklet is excellent and in my opinion better than the FTD release. And for those who asked, the CDs slot in from the top as on the FTD and are easy to remove.

I wonder what the reasoning was for releasing this material on both FTD and Legacy and if I had to pick one it would be this new release… and it is a lot cheaper.

I am planning another Elvis article/review for my blog soon (https://peter-lewry.blogspot.com/?m=0)

In all honesty, I don’t think the majority of fans were expecting any improvement over the visuals - maybe hoping, but not expecting. And I’m sure Sony realise that a lot of fans are quite content with the FTD release they have together with the deluxe DVD release from 2004, which I thought offered very good picture quality.

Sony are probably hoping for some sales from the kind of fans who never tap into FTD releases due to their prices plus the double dippers who must own everything and then the general public, which will offset any losses from some fans who are quite happy with their FTD purchase. But the release is unlikely to be a big seller anyhow - The On Tour set didn’t exactly fly off the shelves and that set contained three unreleased shows, so what chance of really good sales does a set have that contains nothing new apart from the rehearsal show that has been remixed.

Many here also said that the 68 sp Blu-ray wasn’t an improvement either. I found that to be false. Not as big as a regular Elvis movie but an improvement nonetheless. My set will be here in two weeks and I can see for myself. The review may be correct but I’ll see.

I have the FTD and the DVD set, so I won't be rushing out to buy this one, given the recent reviews. I expect it will be available cheaply at some point, so I might pick it up then, but overall I'm happy with what I have already.

That's where I'm at, pretty much, for this release. It would have to be very inexpensive though, lol. based on the MRS mix for the main show on FTD and the single sample online, This rehearsal show remix sounds to be a minor upgrade at best. Then even the Blu Ray has zero improvement? I'd like to see a few more reviews on that regard. I'm satisfied with what I currently have for the Aloha event.

I haven't bought the FTD MSG set yet, and almost certainly won't as based on the samples of MRS work on these I've heard, and my own tastes, I prefer the 2012 PFAP show mixes. Yes the new mixes give the instruments more "space", but I like the aggressive mixes on the 2012 set.

Having said all that, If I hadn't already bought the Aloha FTD, I would have been all in on this. It does look like an attractive package.

Yup, totally agree.
I don't play the Aloha concerts enough to warrant buying them all over again.

Yes, it a good buy for anyone that doesn't own the shows, or even those that passed on the FTD, but there's very little incentive for those of us that have everything already.

It's a shame that the relatively small market for these sets has resulted in a distinct lack of creativity with the footage. I appreciate it's a video source, but I'm pretty sure a little upscaling would have been possible, and it would have been nice to have the option of watching both shows synced to the new audio mixes.

That would certainly have been enough for me to justify buying it all over again...

And that’s the point - a small market will not allow Sony to increase their manufacturing budget to cover the extra costs involved in some kind of upscaling and newly synced audio without increasing the selling price, which in turn is likely to put the non fan off from buying. There’s only so much a non fan will buy into, and seeing set lists which look similar to other releases does not help either, especially if someone has just bought a copy of the On Tour box.

Sony have basically shot themselves in the foot when they allowed FTD to put out their deluxe version last year.

When it comes to movie and tv production I would not want any kind of oVerdub and Sync with the cd. Leave that to the bootleggers.

Remaster the sound that was committed to video that night and remix that.

I wonder if Ernst will offer anything on why they there was no improvement to the dvd beside putting a bluray logo on it? I wonder if the live in ‘72 ftd project is dead?

They have used blu ray because the format allows them to fit all of the footage on to one disc, therefore, keeping the costs down.

Had there been a significant improvement in the picture quality, this would surely have been part of the marketing spin.

for the purists out there it would be great to see the live broadcast which actually did go out live to the countries that were able to watch it live.

We are yet to ever see that version the closest we have is the Japanese broadcast which is sadly incomplete

Thanks. I'm sure you weren't supposed to share any of this more than 10 days before the actual release
The reason I received an advance copy was to write a review and promote the release and there was no embargo on posting about it before release date, something that happens sometimes. I’ve worked with Sony Music for more than thirty years during my work as a freelance journalist/author and consultant and during that time received and reviewed more advance copies than I can remember. I know from past experience they have appreciated the reviews I have posted on various sites including my blog.
Thank you, that's good to know.

hearing there's no difference in quality has made me decide not to buy it, i'm certainly not goin to buy it for just the rehearsal show remix.

I'm hopeful that the sound on the blu-ray is a great deal better this time around, as DVD audio is heavily compressed.

I may go ahead and purchase, why I don’t know. It is so to speak relatively inexpensive. 🤷🏼‍♂️
