it makes no sense that he didn't sing these live.

I will never understand why. If he didn't want to sing his oldies, why not his newer hits rather than all the covers? Like In The Ghetto, dropped after a couple of years. A song he must have been proud of and did extremely well in the charts. A mature song rather than the childish teddy bear he continued to sing.

Surely someone around him suggested these songs be added? It would have made sense even if only during the April tour after running through them in the mock session.
It does beg the question with over 50 gold records, 18 #1 hits and some 38 top ten hits.......how many were even touched in concert (and I"m not talking about one or two offs or a verse). Food for thought.
I make it that he sang 39 of his US single A-sides (as listed by Wikipedia) in concert between 1969 and 1977 (I have counted Little Sister and Don't Be Cruel as double A sides) - not including one-offs. A much higher figure than the moaners on here would suggest.
I said 50 gold, 18 number ones and 38 top 10 hits, not US single a sides I wish the other moaners on this board could read better.
I havw no intention of getting books out and accessing multiple websites. If you want that, you can do it yourself. But it's clear from my post that he did not ignore most of his single a-sides, many if which feature in the 38 gold records.
I never asked you nor intended for you (or anyone else for that matter) to get books out and access multiple websites to counter my post but all are welcome to. How about just replying more civilly for a start?
I was not uncivil in the first place. Neither did I refer to YOU as one of the people who moans about Elvis's setlists. It was a general comment.

And considering you "begged a question," one would assume that you wanted someone to answer it. You asked quite specifically "how many" Elvis sang in concert.
So just to be clear....when I was begging a question....and you quoted me and countered my observation..you were not referring to me as a moaner? Just want to make sure I have this correct.

You are very hard work. Yes, that is aimed at you.

How many times do you want me to verify what I said and who I was referring to you. Yes, that is aimed at you.

I was answering your question, hence why I quoted you, otherwise no-one would have known whose question I was replying to. But you now say I shouldn't have answered it anyway, so why ask it? Yes, that is aimed at you.

When I talked about the "moaners on the board," I was not specifically referring to you, but to the many people on the board who carp on about what Elvis sang in concert. As far as I'm aware you were not doing so, and I have no idea if you do normally as I do not keep a card index file with notes on who says what and when.

If I was referring to you as a "moaner," I would have made that explicit and not referred. And perhaps I should have referred to you as a moaner anyway, AS YOU HAVE BEEN MOANING EVER SINCE.

No doubt, you will still respond to this asking for verification.

Seems awfully odd that you'd quote me specifically and my observation that Elvis rarely sang a lot of his back catalog, and in the same breath say that people claiming that he didn't were moaners.....yet somehow I'm exempt from the 'moaner' tag....well at least until the end of your post. Really is a shame that whether your comments were directly aimed at me (which you did in the end anyways), or as you claim were directed at either moaners, that name calling other forum members (or me) for their beliefs is what conversations have to come to. Since when has this become a norm or acceptable behavior on this forum? Perhaps you're right and I'll need to ask for clarification.

You didn't say that he rarely sang a lot of his back catalogue. I was replying to this:

It was a question. There is nowhere in that comment where you explicitly say he rarely sang his back catalogue.

Really, this is becoming rather tedious. Quite why you can't accept the explanation that I was not referring to you specifically and then move on, I have no idea.

I wholeheartedly agree with Moderator3's post that much more can be accomplished without the need for name calling....whether it be directly aimed at myself or others on the board because of differences in opinions. There isn't much more to say on the matter other than that.

I sometimes think we look to far into why certain songs were or werent performed. Remember Any Day Now and True Love Travels On A Gravel Road.. Blueberry hill and so on were performed in rehearsal in 72 and didnt make it to the stage either that year. I think alot of it depended on the flow of a show. While we fans love to hear rareties.. we have to remember we were not meant to hear any of these rehearsals and so many shows. The flow of an Elvis show always seemed pretty well structured in terms of pacing and balance of songs. Most of the audiences at these shows would have seen Elvis perform only once maybe multiple times but certainly not as much as we have access to nowadays.

A rehearsal is simply just that a rehearsal.. and elvis might have just wanted to do the song on the spot at that point.. not actually considering it for a live audience.

I have been a fan for more than 30 years and that happened because I was amazed with Elvis singing "Always On My Mind". And I was 4 years and a half old. :)

There are many fans with great knowledge that have answered your question. Elvis recorded the song, rehearsed the song but so far there is not a single evidence he performed on stage. If Elvis performed live, such concert is yet to be discovered. That's all you need to know about the subject.

Whilst there's nothing to suggest that Always On My Mind was considered for inclusion in Elvis’s concerts, let alone performed, Separate Ways was rehearsed in January of 1973, making this a consideration at least. Although either would have been a fine addition to his set list at any time, of course.

Both are good songs and Elvis’s recordings are splendid, and with Separate Ways being the hit of the two on Billboard, as mentioned, this would seem like the more obvious choice. This said, Elvis was unpredictable in many ways. Whilst he did perform most of his singles from the 1970s in concert at one time or another.
Always love hearing your perspective, Greystoke.

Anyway...for our other viewers, here is the rehearsal of Separate Ways. Should give you a good idea of how these songs would have sounded live:

Elvis liked the big dramatic ballads with the big ending. This just fades out. That could have been why he passed on it. But the fact that it made it to the stage with the orchestra here shows he was definitely considering it. Lisa and Priscilla were coming in to Vegas for Lisa's birthday. That would have made for some drama if he performed it with them at one of the shows.

As yet we have no evidence of a live performance of Always On My Mind. But we have about 400 shows which are unreleased in any form. All is possible and we know of songs he only did once or twice.

Thanks to Ernst Joergensen, Roger Semon and Erik Rasmussen for the great work. Keep the spirit alive !

Although I don't find Elvis' version to be the definitive version, I do find it lyrically far superior to Separate Ways. I wish he would have sang Always on mind in concert just to have a comparison because sometimes I found his live performances (see Fairytale) superior to the studio cuts.

Besides, the single Separate Ways/Always On My Mind didn't do well in the charts.
A top 20 single (USA) staying on the chart for 12 weeks and selling around a half million copies sounds pretty good to me.

Andy
Came to think of a check I did on the internet of Elvis' WW chart actions:

I found 39 WW #1 Hits.
An additional WW top 10 Hits: 64
An additional WW top 20 Hits: 25
An additional WW top 40 Hits: 24

You may easily add up Elvis' WW top 40 hits. Kinda popular......

And I did not include US CW or Adult #1's. Or the singles charts after 1982.....

i always loved that pairing...seperate ways/always on my mind.
his most personal singles he would ever release.
when Elvis recorded those, priscilla was leaving.
he was letting us in to something personal and real with this release.
ranks right along side hound dog/don't be cruel and little sister/his latest flame as his 3 best pairings in my opinion.
none as real...raw...and deeply personal as seperate ways/always on my mind.

true over 400 unknown shows but for ALWAYS ON MY MIND to be sung 'live' it would simply HAVE to have occoured between April 72' and say August 73' which is the time period and ttheir are a lot less unknown shows performed during that period....also an unknown run through at a rehearsal seems much more likely-especially before the January Vegas 73' season.

This is a great topic. I am curious why Elvis as far as we know, never performed always on mind live as it is a wonderful reflective song that suited Elvis perfectly. I have listened to every official and bootlegged soundboard and audience recording and I am yet to hear a single reference to this song from either Elvis himself or the audience, such as an audience request.

We may yet get to hear at least a one-line snippet of the song from Elvis from the unreleased shows you mentioned.

"The image is one thing and the human being is another...it's very hard to live up to an image, I'll put it that way"

Elvis at the New York Madison Square Garden press conference, June 9th, 1972.

Why would he sing Always On My Mind - B-side of the single, if he didn't even sing the A-side - Separate Way - live?
i was asking if HE SANG IT LIVE,
My friend, Always on My Mind was B side o the single. The a-side of the single was considered the main track that was most expected to be successful. If Elvis considered Always on My Mind a secondary track, why would he perform it live? Isn't it more logical that he would perform side A? Besides, the single Separate Ways/Always On My Mind didn't do well in the charts.
I always thought it was strange these two songs were coupled together. They are such strong songs, how could the record company - and the buyers - not feel the greatness of these two tracks ...
