I wrote this before. He was more relaxed, energetic, confident, spontaneous, comparing to the main event. Peter Guralnick in Careless Love said the same things.

Elvis is barely there for the rehearsal show. He mumbles, forgets words, has this weird smile like half of his face is frozen, has bags under his eyes - it's not a good show by any measure. He does knock What Now My Love out of the park, but there is no single performance in the rehearsal that is better than the main show. Not one.

I think Fever is better paced without the "everybody's got the fever" bridge that he misses on the main show. Big Hunk - both versions aren't a patch on the versions from Feb / April 1972.

My opinion
Better performances by Elvis during the rehearsal show:
1 - See See Rider
2 - What Now My Love
3 - Fever
4 - Suspicious Minds
5 - A Big Hunk o' Love

Better performances by Elvis during the main show:
1 - Burning Love
2 - Something
3 - You Gave Me a Mountain
4 - My Way
5 - Love Me
6 - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
7 - I Can't Stop Loving You (not done during rehearsal show)
8 - Welcome To My World
9 - I'll Remember You

Performances close to equal:
Steamroller Blues
smt131 An American Trilogy

I forgive Elvis for Welcome to My World.
What the heck does that mean? The fact is that he totally messed up on "Welcome to My World" during the rehearsal show.

I can't agree on Steamroller - he totally messes up and misses out the second verse completely.

Why is this all about Aloha? Surely there are Aloha threads...?

Yep, and unfortunately he mumbles through the second verse during the main show, so that's why I refer to both performances as "close" to equal.

Because the "Aloha From Hawaii" album is the correct answer to the topic title question.

Off topic but Aloha rehearsal to me was a lot better than the many n show. The rehearsal is my go to. He just seemed more at ease.

Your statement really isn't off topic.

It was the Madison Square Garden album and the "Aloha From Hawaii" album (of the main show) that were the reasons why
there was never an "Elvis On Tour" soundtrack album.

We must be listening to different things. He skips a couple of words when he bends down to collect a lei and kiss the girl at the end of the first verse, before finishing with "full of rhythm and blues", but the second verse is terrific - he really seems love the line "churning urn of burning funk", recognising first Ronnie's drumming as he turns to him with a smile and nod, then Glen's wonderful piano fills. I don't hear any mumbling.

And also Suspicious Minds was worse in the main event.

Sorry, DarrylMac, I really don't want to nitpick "Steamroller Blues" to death (because I do appreciate both performances), but if you listen closer, Elvis only says "full of rhythm and". If he said "blues" it's inaudible.

Listen at the 0:39 mark . . .

Yes, that's the first verse, not the second, and it's clearly because he's kissing the girl, rather than mumbling, which I can definitely forgive.

Okay, DarrylMac, you've talked me into giving the main show "Steamroller Blues" the nod for being better than the rehearsal show version.

I've altered my list below...

My opinion
Better performances by Elvis during the rehearsal show:
1 - See See Rider
2 - What Now My Love
3 - Fever
4 - Suspicious Minds
5 - A Big Hunk o' Love

Better performances by Elvis during the main show:
1 - Burning Love
2 - Something
3 - You Gave Me a Mountain
4 - Steamroller Blues
5 - My Way
6 - Love Me
7 - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
8 - I Can't Stop Loving You (not done during rehearsal show)
9 - Welcome To My World
10 - I'll Remember You

Performance close to equal in both shows:
smt131 An American Trilogy

I think his overall vocals are better in he rehearsal show. He's a bit self conscious in the main show and holds back, sounds more nasal and shaky. You can hear it mostly on the record. The sound on the 2004 DVD SE is so wel done, that you don't notice it as much.
