Re: Last Elvis Concert You Listened To Was?
Currently listening to the 26/01/70 opening show at the International. The MRS version, which arrived today. They've certainly made the recording sound more "alive" than previous releases, including the FTD. Wonderful concert, with around half the songs being performed live for the first time (a few sound different compared to the other end of the engagement). Elvis in superb form, sounding fresh and invigorated. Gosh, he was on fire in 1970.
I'm so impressed I've also ordered two of MRS's 1972 releases.

Today I listened to All Things Are Possible. Elvis' sining is very strong, but from the very first song he is rushing very bad. The songs are being played quickly after one another, and not in a good way like New York 1972. There are some rarities in this show though: there goes my everything, only believe and make the world go away, which are all sung well. Love me still has the original phrasing on "tear it all apart" which would soon be turned into the 70s phrasing we're all familiar with.
Elvis is still in fantastic form here but I always experience the September 1970-February 1971 period with some discomfort I can't get rid of. Luckily, Elvis seemed to calm down in Tahoe that year.

I'm listening to the multi-tracks of Destination USA. Amazing version of Big Hunk O' Love. Love how Elvis enthusiastically shouts before the first solo. Amazing different phrasing on the ending of Amercian Trilogy. Too bad he sounds hoarse on the last note. He sings the ending of Can't Of Help Falling In Love with passion, but again with a slightly hoarse voice. Never noticed the hoarseness before on some of this February 16 recordings. Nevertheless fantastic performances each.

Great summation of the period. I get what you mean about a feeling of discomfort. Elvis was capable of fantastic performances à la Aug 10th - 13th 1970 but, for whatever reasons, his concerts in that time frame became somewhat sloppy and rushed. I believe some of the more astute reviews of the period picked up on this. The concerts from late '71 and much of '72 were much stronger, even if some of that 1970 dynamism was lost forever.vinelvis wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 11:53 pmToday I listened to All Things Are Possible. This evening I listened to the 12/8/72 MS, which I think is an excellent performance.

Next stop Fayetteville, first disc. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Looking at the setlists probably the best of the three. Seems like Elvis got more tired as the tour progressed. Still miles away form the other famous August 3 show though (1969).
