Re: What are you listening to right now?
John Prines marvellous self titled debut album from 1971.Songwritting of the highest order.
Picked up this rather special version at a record fair yesterday
It's a 2021 reissue from Vinyl Me Please all analogue audiophile pressing with a couple of extras in the packaging including a high quality art print.Have it on CD but the sound quality on this blows it away.Only got a couple more to have his full discography on vinyl.

She does a great slow version of Pledging My Love on this album.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
After a long rainy day, converting my CD collection onto hard drives, listening to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Dave Edmunds, Emmylou Harris, ABBA, Hank Williams jr. et al. Now, winding down with disc 1: Way Down In The Jungle Room. How can I not love this guy!
For some reason, I find this release "crispier" to these ears!

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Was one of the first FTD releases I bought and because of that I’m really fond of it.
Today I opened for the first time my copy of A Prince From Another Planet and playing it. I’m not a big fan of these cardboard releases even though they look beautiful because they wear so fast. It’s been unopened for three years and looks like this. I’ve moved twice in those years but man. Sound is out of this world though!

Re: What are you listening to right now?
In a charity shop today, I came across Johnnie Ray's album "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," recorded in 1976 and released in 1980). I knew of it before, but hadn't actually heard it. Listening to it tonight, it's considerably better than I thought it would be.
There are some re-recording of Ray's biggest hits (all done very well, presumably in arrangements he was using in nightclubs and theatres at the time). The rest of the album is mostly material the late 1960s and into the 1970s, most of which he handles very well. The album starts with a swinging version of Mame, which is followed by a very nice rendition of It's Impossible. Tie a Yellow Ribbon, cheesy though it is, gets a very nice outing here.
The medley of Until It's Time For You To Go and If You Go Away is ambitious, and doesn't quite work, but it's interesting to hear Ray singing these big ballads. He has more luck with It's All Over and the closing Goodnight Sleepyhead, with the latter finding Ray in a more gentle setting which is nice to hear. But the best out of the "new" material is "I'll Cry in My Sleep," a divorce song that would have suited latter-day Elvis. It's interesting that Ray, who Elvis was endlessly compared to in the press in 1956, ended up on his final album of new material, recordings songs that were similar to what Elvis was concentrating on in the 1970s.
Sadly, Ray only went back into the studio after this to re-record a handful of his hits. The liner notes on this album say that Ray was "singing better than ever." He wasn't - but he's still on very good form here (and much better than some of his early 1960s recordings). Much of it is overwrought, but that's part of Ray's style and I wouldn't want it any other way. Despite (or because of) his overly-emotional performances, he still has the power to affect me in ways that many others do not.
And I never get tired of seeing this clip of Johnnie Ray. He's not in anything like as good form vocally as on the studio album I've just talked about, but the love he gets from this Dutch (I think) audience following his three-song set (this is the last song) is really remarkable. In fact, I'd say it's comparable to the love that Garland used to get when she was on stage. Ray was clearly moved by the ovation, and it's hard not to be moved with him.

Accused of being "a nerd in his 20s." I wish.
