First home video release of Aloha?
When was the first home video release of Aloha and in what format? Was Aloha released on VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc or RCA Videodisc first or on all formats at once?

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
If the Mountain Video release is the same one I had, it contained the first show rom the 12th rather than the broadcast concert.

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
I got this release when about age 12 and it has the most hideous Feb 1977 picture on the cover. It also used to confuse me no end why he didn't have the red lei on and his hair did't match all the still photos from the concert that I would see in books and magazines Of course there was nothing in the video telling you it was the rehearsal from the 12th and it still started with the helicopter landing. Mountain also did a 68 comeback special release around the same time with a painting of him on the cover sporting sideburns that must have gone on to inspire Wolverine He never had a set of chops that big even in 77 let alone 68. Happy days - we are pretty spoiled now.

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
I'd completely forgot about these video discs quite a cool cover and assuming the content is the 14th Jan. This format was originally conceived in mid 60's but was delayed for years before reaching production. Think it was more about 1981 that RCA went to market with it but was very short lived being surpassed quickly by laser disc and videotape formats and production of the players stopped in 1984 and disc releases a couple of years later.ForeverElvis wrote: ↑Sat Jan 15, 2022 10:26 amI remember an RCA Videodisc in 1978-1979eligain wrote:When was the first home video release of Aloha and in what format? Re: First home video release of Aloha?
Is that one the rehearsal show? Or did the rehearsal tape have a different name? I know ALL STAR put that one out... and the '68 special. I know I have mine kicking around somewhere...
I still have my copies of this one on both VHS and Beta...

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
Thanks for the responses so far! I remember an electronics store at the mall in our area that also sold and rented video tapes and video and laser discs that constantly had Aloha playing on an Advent projector TV just outside of their entrance facing mall traffic when Aloha was first released. It seems like it was being played from a laser disc. I can't remember exactly what year this was but it seems like it was 79 or 80. I can't remember which format Aloha came out in first? Didn't the first releases have a couple of missing songs like Johnny Be Goode and Can't Stop Loving You?

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
There was a release (I believe in the mid-90s) that did omit those two songs...but, it did include the first-ever video release of "No More" from the post-show session.eligain wrote: ↑Sun Jan 16, 2022 1:44 amThanks for the responses so far! Re: First home video release of Aloha?
One of the first issues in the UK was missing a couple of songs, IIRC. Not sure, but think it was Johnny B Goode and Welcome to My World.
Accused of being "a nerd in his 20s." I wish.

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
I have this Videodisc. It’s dated 1983.ForeverElvis wrote: ↑Sat Jan 15, 2022 10:26 amI remember an RCA Videodisc in 1978-1979eligain wrote:When was the first home video release of Aloha and in what format? So, I think the beta release from 1980 it’s probably the earliest…

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
My Dad had bought a Pioneer Laserdisc player and the first official release of Aloha I got was the Laserdisc version but I got it maybe a year or more after it was first released when my Dad bought the player. I had taped the show on our VCR when it aired in 77 so I had that to watch until an official release became available.

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
In the UK, 1991 we had this Laserdisc from Lightyear;
It seems this was issued prior to Lightyear’s subsequent removal of songs due to copyright when they issued the DVD n 1999.
Virgin also produced a VHS version; There was also a VHS bootleg of the rehearsal show, which I rented from our local video shop. This was the first time I saw the show, but I can not find any images of it online.
Edit: I found the one I was remembering, was it a bootleg?
Another questionable release from the UK (I think I even owned this one).
Portland Films also produced this little beauty (this is how I first saw the ‘68 Special) .

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
I had this release on the RCA CED for Selectavision players.ForeverElvis wrote: ↑Sat Jan 15, 2022 10:26 amI remember an RCA Videodisc in 1978-1979eligain wrote:When was the first home video release of Aloha and in what format?
I would say this was from 1983, '84.
Just in the past few years I finally threw it in the garbage.
It and many more including Elvis On Tour and Stevie Nicks
live in concert(HBO). Took up too much space.

Did you used to have a Selectavision player? I'm guessing it's next to impossible to find a working one.iplayastrat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 1:35 pmI had this release on the RCA CED for Selectavision players.ForeverElvis wrote: ↑Sat Jan 15, 2022 10:26 amI remember an RCA Videodisc in 1978-1979eligain wrote:When was the first home video release of Aloha and in what format?

player at the time they offered one of two sets of stereo discs with
purchase. I remember some of the discs being The Go Go's, The Who,
Rush, the movie Flash Dance among others. We had a local store that
rented the disc out.
I would never recommend purchasing a player and these discs.
The disc were known for skipping, even when new. The disc
themselves are made like vinyl records. Except the grooves
are much tighter.

Re: First home video release of Aloha?
The first US dvd edition that was released in 2000 was missing 2 songs, cant remember that any european video editions had missing songs.(Johnny Bee Goode and I Cant Stop Loving You….I think)
My first Aloha video buy was the Virgin UK edition in 1985…..I dont think the show was available to buy before that in europe but I could be wrong.
I also got 2 laserdisc editions in the 90s hoping that they were in stereo sound….sadly they were not despite stereo on the cover/label.
In 2022 all official releases of the Aloha shows looks bad on my 65` OLED.

Yeah I remember when these came out and if I remember right, laser discs came out around the same time or slightly afterward and my Dad wound up buying the laserdisc player because it seemed like better technology.iplayastrat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 2:14 pmYes, I had a stereo one. I also purchased a Laser Disc player in the late 80's. I believe it was near $900 dollars.eligain wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 1:47 amYeah I remember when these came out and if I remember right, laser discs came out around the same time or slightly afterward and my Dad wound up buying the laserdisc player because it seemed like better technology.iplayastrat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 19, 2022 2:14 pmYes, I had a stereo one. It played both sides without having to be flipped. Of course I then repurchased Elvis
On Tour, TTWII and many others.
I finally gave away the player and most of the discs. As it too took up too much room.
Of all my electronics purchases, I wish I had my money back on both the CED and laser
disc players and the discs that went with them. Oh well, blame it on youth.

But, when I was 18 or 19 (1982-1983) I was a graveyard shift security guard for a summer back then and one of the displays contained a number of these discs and a player. Guess what I was watching! Besides Aloha I remember the paramount films.
