Lost in Hollywood - reconstructed celluloid masters

Post by elvisalisellers »

Rarely did RCA release the genuine feature film version masters that were afforded post-production scoring session overdubs.
Exceptions in Elvis' lifetime were a couple of tracks included on the Spinout ["All That I Am"] and Double Trouble [the title track] soundtrack albums, respectively.

What follows is an extensive audit of those exclusive [and most notable] adaptations in brand new reconstructions [I've shared some examples including "Come Along" and "Have a Happy" on past projects] utilising the best sources and transfers available [embracing some original elements] to sync.

I've tried to stay as faithful as possible [excluding any extraneous non-musical content, e.g., audience applause/reaction etc.] but some compromises were necessary, if only from a technical and/or listening pleasure point of view.
Further, the broad majority now appear in stereo or [as per some selections from the 50's] in a more spatial monaural configuration.

The vast minefield that is the 60's movie masters will be worked on [generally on a soundtrack-by-soundtrack basis] at a future date.

Disc 1:

When the King Starts to Do It: The 50's

01. Loving You (main title version) - orchestrated/instrumental links/overdubs (features more of Elvis' vocal than heard previously)

The Rockin' Rebel_Golden Archives_1978.jpeg

02. Road Medley: (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear / Got a Lot o' Livin' to Do! / Hot Dog - orchestrated/instrumental links/overdubs (unique binaural-to-mono 'Elvis track' mix-down - original instrumentation and backing vocals pared-back)
Note: "GALOLTD!" (record version) sequence was an abbreviated edit of the second chorus

03. Lonesome Cowboy - percussion (intro and coda) overdub

Paramount_January 1957.jpeg

04. Hot Dog - instrumental (intro) overdub

Loving You_production notes.jpeg

05. Loving You (end version) - orchestrated overdub (alternate edit to the same version used on farm - both of which mixed out the live harmonica track heard here) *

45_Italy.jpeg

06. Treat Me Nice (movie version) - guitar and handclap overdubs *

Tape legend.jpeg

07. Jailhouse Rock - full-length musical overdubs (clipped original rhythm track intro repair) *

Radio Recorders_April 1957.jpeg

08. Young and Beautiful (end MGM composite version) - orchestrated (coda) overdub *

MGM document_1960.jpeg

09. Crawfish (movie edit) - additional Kitty White vocals; instrumental (intro) overdubs *

Kitty White.jpg

10. Trouble - instrumental preamble

Radio Recorders_January 1958.jpeg

11. King Creole - "tommy gun" drum roll; guitar slide/bend; transposed "Yeah!" backing vocals (during guitar break) overdubs

Unadorned album cover.jpg

12. New Orleans - backing vocals ("Where?!" x 2) overdub

UK movie poster.jpeg

Note: Unutilized (and unreleased) overdubbed film versions of "Hard Headed Woman" and "Danny" were also recorded.

* Denotes stereo

I'm really enjoying these. Thank you! The only thing I was hoping for was maybe the piano intro on Young and Beautiful which was only featured in the movie.

You know, that version of "Dixie" and uh, the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," it's so beautiful!
The band he's put together is so over-the-top, and only Elvis would have that kinda spending power, and just audacious craziness. Choirs, and orchestras, and a great rhythm section, maybe another gospel group on the side. None of it makes sense until you suddenly hear something like that, and they're all playing a role in that, and it's very moving music. That's the pure joy of music in the man. You know, that's when I see everything stop.

I did note that but felt the sound was a bit too jarring against the more pristine sounding studio version.

There is also a vague lead-in that segues into "As Long As I Have You" but the isolation just wasn't good enough to use.

Glad you're enjoying them, which is essentially what it is all about.

Having done some tests, some of the more conceptual 60's soundtracks lend themselves especially to this new format.
I think fans are going to be surprised how good [and different] they sound.

Thank you very much elvisalisellers, I always appreciate and enjoy the albums that you very kindly share with everyone on here.
I’ve said this before, ‘you should work for RCA, FTD Sony’. I notice that fellow member ‘mmoie’ also makes a similar comment too.

Once again thank you elvisalisellers.
