EP was obviously a big fan of Sherrill. (But I prefer the Bread's version to Sherrill's.)
I agree, it is very nice. I wish our hero would have pursued such passions a lot more too.

(I can't help but wonder if EP had recorded this type of song, if Priscilla would have tried to claim it as being about her?)

I always loved Aubrey by Sherril, supposedly and according to keith flynn's site there's a studio version to from the 1973 voice session Elvis paid out of his own money for.. i find it's a shame that these songs remain locked away considering they are part of the Elvis story.
songs listed for september 23/24
I Miss You (by Elvis which we have)
Killing Me Softly
Why Me Lord
In The Sweet By And By
Are You Sincere (by Elvis which we have)
Danny's Song
Aubrey

and then they did some remakes on the 29th
I'm Gonna Write A Song
In The Sweet By And By
Aubrey

Why these recordings remain unreleased? In fact, i've never even heard about their existence... 😳

I've always enjoyed this by Elvis (unfortunately mostly Sherrill), and now that my third grandchild is named Aubrey, I like it more! Further, my grandson's name is CAMDEN. I had nothing to do with it!

From my lyrics book, Elvis' performance is not in brackets -- and I love the last two words Elvis sings. It goes right through you!

AUBREY *
Las Vegas – Sept 2, 1974 MS

(And Aubrey was her name
A not so very ordinary girl or name
But who’s to blame?
For a love that wouldn’t bloom
For the hearts that never played in tune.

Like a lovely melody
That ev’ryone can sing
Take away the words that rhyme
It doesn’t mean a thing.

And Aubrey was her name
We tripped the light
And danced together to the moon
But where was June?

No, it never came around
And if it did, it never made a sound, maybe I was absent?
Or was listening too fast
Catching all the words but then the meaning going past.

And how I miss the girl
And I’d go a thousand miles around the world
Just to be closer to her than to me.

And Aubrey was her name)
I never knew her
(I never knew her)
But I loved her just the same
(But I loved her just the same)
I loved her name
(I loved her name
Wish that I had found the way
And the reasons that would make her stay).

I have learned to lead a life
(I have learned to lead a life)
Apart from all the rest
(Apart from all the rest)
If I can't have the one I want
(If I can't have the one I want)
I'll do without the rest
(I'll do without the rest).

And God ...
(And God, I miss the girl
And I'd go a million times around the world
Just to say, "She had been mine for a day").

NOTE: Sherrill Nielsen sings most of the song, with Elvis chipping in on many lines toward the end – very similar to “Softly As I Leave You.”

Bread by a mile! I never understood Elvis' fascination with Sherrill Nielsen. It really makes me question his musical tastes at that point in his life.

I wish Elvis had been inspired to sing the song himself.

Bread is one of my favorite groups. Aubrey is a beautiful melody, and the lyric is quite good, too, once you get into it. It doesn't hurt that I've known a couple girls named Aubrey, and they were worth singing about. It's too bad that Elvis never covered any of the songs written for Bread by David Gates, or James Griffin and Robb Royer.

The Aubrey recording was first released on this Live Archives 1988 bootleg LP that also included the infamous "Drug Monologue"
.

You refer to Desert Storm?

If I ever find the guy that put this out, I'm gonna rip his dogmad tongue out by the roots!

Desert Storm came later. The sound quality on this bootleg was rather poor...
