Killer Version of 'My Baby Left Me"

Post by AndyDumas »

Killer Version of 'My Baby Left Me" from Elvis: 'Let Me Be There' 3 CD Set from FTD.

I believe this is a better version of the song, than the version released on Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis.
Love the opening guitar riff. Too bad it's just a tad too fast.

Oh my God, you have just changed my mind about ordering that set from FTD.

That version is killer. It sounds phenomenal.

OK that's beyond ridiculous... what's the speed adjustment (%) needed to fix that issue?

Why would FTD release this show and not correct the speed. The music sounds pretty good but Elvis voice sounds sped up. With the cost of these sets there should be no margin for error. Did they not listen to this show before releasing. I love FTD releases as well as the next fan but c’mon FTD you can do better. I was wanting this set also.

In truth, Elvis sounds speeded up even when it is pitch corrected. The pitch isn't hugely off. I think Elvis was intentionally trying to emulate his early voice and that's what the little laugh is about during the first line.

Terrible version with Elvis’ voice speed up. Thanks for posting and reminding me not to buy this FTD.

When reading the topic 'Killer version of my baby left me' I thought you were revering to Billy Swan's version of the song, that's what I call a 'killer version', not this Mickey Mouse sped up crap ... how disappointing ;-)

Don’t care for this Billy Swan version.

Thats also what i heard. I believe there was another FTD release in which he sang that song and started it out that same way.

It's far better because the band and Elvis are sticking to the full rendition they'd worked up at rehearsals a few days before. Two months later in Memphis, it's almost an afterthought. Presley touched it just a few times after that.

But I wouldn't call it a "killer" performance. It's spirited for sure, but Elvis doesn't use any of the marvelous 1956 arrangement, from the acoustic bass opening to the hypnotic guitar riffs played by Scotty Moore. And, yeah, the tempo is all wrong, not unlike how he treated other early tunes at the time.

Conversely, when Creedence Clearwater Revival put their recording of "My Baby Left Me" on 1970's Cosmo's Factory, that's exactly the path they took. And it's fantastic. The band paid a direct tribute to the Sun sound on the same album with their cover of "Ooby Dooby." Add to that the John Fogerty originals and you have a classic album.

A cover this slavish might be seen as uncreative, but two things stand out.

One is John Fogerty's powerful and unique vocal. He's not trying to be Elvis, he's being himself.

The other is that, to pay homage in 1970 to early Elvis and Sun Records with Roy Orbison's "Ooby Dooby" was taking a chance at being ridiculed by their peers for doing "old music." Bullshit, said the band. This stuff is as relevant now as it was back in 1956.

As an aside, I saw Fogerty just a few weeks ago, and he did several numbers from Cosmo's Factory. He sounded terrific, played some stunning lead guitar, and the band was superb. And John is 77 years old. Felt great.

At least it was at the correct speed, unlike FTD!

Another awesome version.

I’ve always found it kind of weird that Elvis would sing these lesser-known songs from the 50’s and do them justice, unlike the number one hits from the same decade as throwaways.
