There were a few he did pretty well like A Big Hunk O' Love, Lawdy Miss Clawdy and Trying To Get To You (although LMC and TTGTY weren't number ones)... but I get your point...minkahed wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 6:31 amAnother awesome version.elvisfan51 wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 4:36 amAt least it was at the correct speed, unlike FTD!Johnny2523 wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 4:05 amwhich also turned out to be the last live version sadly.
I’ve always found it kind of weird that Elvis would sing these lesser-known songs from the 50’s and do them justice, unlike the number one hits from the same decade as throwaways.

I believe this is a better version of the song, than the version released on Elvis Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis.
Love the opening guitar riff. Too bad it's just a tad too fast.
It's far better because the band and Elvis are sticking to the full rendition they'd worked up at rehearsals a few days before. Two months later in Memphis, it's almost an afterthought. Presley touched it just a few times after that.
But I wouldn't call it a "killer" performance. It's spirited for sure, but Elvis doesn't use any of the marvelous 1956 arrangement, from the acoustic bass opening to the hypnotic guitar riffs played by Scotty Moore. And, yeah, the tempo is all wrong, not unlike how he treated other early tunes at the time.
Conversely, when Creedence Clearwater Revival put their recording of "My Baby Left Me" on 1970's Cosmo's Factory, that's exactly the path they took. And it's fantastic. The band paid a direct tribute to the Sun sound on the same album with their cover of "Ooby Dooby." Add to that the John Fogerty originals and you have a classic album.

I think he was embarrassed by them and felt they were silly and dated. He only did them because he felt obligated to. He was quoted to have said, "I don't what to wind up on some stage, fat and 40, still singing Hound Dog."minkahed wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 6:31 amAnother awesome version.elvisfan51 wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 4:36 amAt least it was at the correct speed, unlike FTD!Johnny2523 wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 4:05 amwhich also turned out to be the last live version sadly.

Even on “Heartbreak”, dropped a key down to D and slowed down, (bluesy arrangement) there’s a couple really good versions.
I am certainly not complaining about it. It is what it is.

The unbeatable 1956 master is the song that made me a fan. That intro, the drums and descending bass, Scotty's riff and Elvis' wailing vocal. Go on, mate. I'll have some of that.

Re: Killer Version of 'My Baby Left Me"
"My Baby Left Me" is one of my favorites from the 50s, but I was never enamored with the 70s live version. It's just the live "That's All Right" from the 70s with a different solo and lyrics.
Kinda like I love "Down In The Alley", but the live version from '74 just feels totally generic (besides it sounding as if Elvis was having a stroke each time he sings "Janie, Janie..." and follows it up with those "dadadadadada"). The rehearsals sound a bit better to me, though. Anyway, these two songs are cases where I don't mind sticking to the usual setlist - what's the point in adding something if it will sound like anything else? At least work on an interesting arrangement.
