What does Elvis sing?

Post by dannyboy1 »

In the 1969 session Elvis sings a one-liner that sounds like: "When the learling sails away..."

Does anyone know if this is part of a song?
What is a learling? Or is it lerling?
Maybe the name of a boat?
Anyone know?

"The way you looked, the sound of your laughing..."

It's a line from a song called Our love and aloha

OUR LOVE AND ALOHA

© 1958-1965
Lyrics & Music: Leolani Blaisdell

Sheet Music: In Hawaiian Luau (Hal Leonard Publishing, 1979)

Recordings:
LP: Ernie Menehune, Back to Aloha Land (Roadrunner 1313)

When the Lurline sails away
Smile your sweet and winsome way
And take with you
Our love and aloha

With a token flower lei
And a kiss for you this day
We give to you
Our love and aloha

Now that we must say 'adieu'
God bless you and guide you
May some day your journey end
Right here in our 'alohaland'

When the whistle starts to blow
One more kiss before you go
And keep with you
Our love and aloha

He's referring to this ship:

SS Lurline
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Lurline_(1932)

One hears the reference between takes of "Rubberneckin'" during his 1969 sessions:

Rubberneckin'

As noted on the Master and Sessions site, there is one false start (0:39) and one complete take (3:17). Prior to take 2, which would be the master, there is a bit of rehearsal and Elvis offers up a one liner of the Hawaiian ditty, "Our Love And Aloha (When The Lurline Sails Away)" --- written in 1958 by popular Hawaiian female vocalist Leolani Blaisdell.

Elvis might have heard it by any of the local entertainers when he was on vacation in Hawaii or Las Vegas in 1968, like by Don Ho or perhaps "Hawaii's Suntanned Irishman," Ernie Menehune. Or he knew of it from earlier visits to those places.

Note: the third cut on Side 2 is "Our Love and Aloha."

He sings mostly country, gospel, rockabilly, rock n roll, and on occasion, some rhythm & blues.

Some corrections for you:

Your photo depicts the group leaving for San Francisco on the S.S. Lurline, on Wednesday afternoon, November 13, 1957.

We see Lamar Fike, Elizabeth Moore, Tom Diskin, Ken Moore, unknown and Arthur Hooten.

Here are photos of Elvis' arrival in Honolulu on the S.S. Matsonia, on Saturday, November 9, 1957:

Also, these luxury steamships were not affiliated with the military, so they were known as the S.S. Lurline and S.S. Matsonia.
