That was miles away from my favorite version in Greensboro in 1972. Not many singers could get away with reading lyrics on stage. Elvis is the only one I've ever seen do it.
That said, he had the complete attention of his final audience. When he sang the line, "When tears are in your eyes, I will give you a scarf," they picked right up on it and reacted.
