As unbelievable as the assault is, I think it has just bought him winning the election.

Re: Trump assasination attempt
You may be right.
But I don t understand the slow reaction of the secret service.
They did not see the assaulter?
A witness claims that he informed the police on the existence of this possible attacker with a rifle but the police did nothing.

Re: Trump assasination attempt
Politics is tearing the country apart. Both sides of the aisle are equally to blame. They demonize each other continuously. The radical fringes of both parties are dangerous. It certainly wasn’t always like this. All civility and common sense just appears to have vanished. Families become fractured over politics and that’s the dumbest thing I can think of. Why do different views have to be so polarizing? Even on this board you see it. Don’t dare to offer up a different viewpoint. You might get banished to Moscow. One thing is almost guaranteed after today. Trump is going to be the next president. That fist pump photo of him with blood on his face is the defining moment. Trump nailed it. Love him or hate him , he’s no dummy. That image is gonna crush that feeble old man standing there with a blank stare and open mouth. That’s the reality.

Re: Trump assasination attempt
Given the hate the leaders of the intelligence community in the U.S. have for Trump (recall they spied on him in 2016 and 2017 relying on intelligence the FBI did not think was credible), one has to wonder if the upper echelon in the Secret Service are holding back the full range of resources to protect him.

May I suggest the FBI put this guy on the top of their interview list?

Trump has always brought out the worst in people. He always incites division and hatred and even his "fight, fight, fight" and fist pump after the shooting plays into that violent culture.
Sadly, America has too many guns and too many nut jobs and this has culminated in this terrible assassination attempt.
I love so much about America but at the moment I'm regretting booking a trip there in late September.

It’s a shame the parties are giving us these two candidates. You make a good point about Trump. He does bring out the worst in people. Trump doesn’t have the ability to heal wounds and bring people together. He cultivates an it’s us against the attitude. His base eats it up. It makes me sick but he’s gonna crush Biden. The state of politics now in my country is at an all time low. The Dems are equally disgraceful by hiding Biden’s impairment from the people and having the nerve to run him for a second term.rickeap wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 2:59 amTrump has always brought out the worst in people. America has too many guns in the wrong hands. The guns aren’t going away. The odds of you having any problems are very slim I’m sure. I doubt you will be involved in any high risk activities. America is still a great place. Come and have a great time.

needs to be determined if the dad was in fact a licensed owner or not. Another question - Was the Dad just as mentally-challenged as his son??
Or is it yet another case of a nut-job acted out alone, combined by a failure of communication between the local Police and Secret Service around security for a former President?

Re: Trump assasination attempt
A Very wise move by incumbent POTUS, no matter what some here think of him..
Both Biden and Trump and (possibly the future leaders on america )and certain movie celebrities needs to be careful with their choice vitriols, because for a large populated country like USA, there are too many nutjobs there who are going to take the comments literally.
Biden admits Trump 'bullseye' comments a mistake...
US President Joe Biden has said it was a mistake for him to say "time to put Trump in a bullseye", days before Saturday's assassination attempt on his election rival.
Mr Biden's remarks came in his first interview since the incident, in which he defended his rhetoric against Donald Trump and cited why it was important.
The president told NBC's Lester Holt his campaign had a duty to clearly communicate the threat of a second Trump term, adding that his words were not the ones that needed to be tempered.
Mr Biden said he meant Democrats needed to focus more on Trump, his policies and the false statements he made during the presidential debate late last month.
"It was a mistake to use the word. I didn't say crosshairs. I meant bullseye, I meant focus on him. Focus on what he's doing," he said.
Throughout the interview, Mr Biden made it clear he would not be stepping aside in the presidential race - despite calls from members of his own party after his poor debate performance.
"I'm old," he lamented, while also noting he's only three years older than Trump. He said his mental acuity was fine and listed his accomplishments as president - but acknowledged he was working to reaffirm to Americans that he
was up the job.
"I understand why people say, 'God, he’s 81 years old. Whoa. What's he going to be when he’s 83 years old, 84 years?' It’s a legitimate question to ask," he said.
He said he put his faith in the voters who overwhelmingly backed him in the Democratic primary. "I listen to them."
The president has repeatedly called for Americans to "lower the temperature" since the shooting on Saturday, where Trump's ear was grazed by a bullet. "

this is Task & Purpose take on "How Assassin Evaded Secret Service Security"
cannot agree with the calls for the Secret Service director to resign when there is a investigation ongoing.
Better question will be, just how transparent, that the CEO promised, the investigation is going to be?

UPDATE
The young gunman's parents have been interviewed and assisting the FBI with their investigation...
Father of Trump gunman called police about son before attack
The father of the gunman who tried to assassinate Donald Trump called police before the Saturday shooting because he was concerned about his son, according to media reports.
The call is one of a number of red flags revealed in recent days that law enforcement was notified about before gunshots rang out at Trump's Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. Law enforcement - specifically the US Secret Service - has faced mounting questions about security with calls by some lawmakers that the head of the agency should resign.
Matthew Crooks' father called police because he was worried about his son and his whereabouts, a law enforcement source told the BBC's news partner CBS. It's unclear when the call was made but it was before the shooting.
It is unclear what his father told police. Fox News reported that Crooks’ parents, Mary and Matthew, told officers “they were worried” about their son and that he had disappeared without any advance notice.
His parents are both co-operating in the investigation, the FBI has said.
Law enforcement sources have told US media that the gunman had conducted online searches into a major depressive disorder and the Democratic National Convention scheduled for August.
He had also saved images of Trump, President Joe Biden, Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Chris Wray and a member of the British Royal Family, according to reports from the Washington Post and Associated Press.
Investigators are still trying to trace a potential motive for the 20-year-old gunman, who was shot dead by Secret Service snipers after opening fire. His attack left one member of the audience dead and several others wounded.
The preliminary investigation has found that Crooks climbed onto the roof of a nearby building outside the rally by climbing onto an air conditioning unit. The units were located next to the building, the unnamed official told CBS.
A counter sniper flagged a suspicious man using a rangefinder to the US Secret Service some 20 minutes before the attack started, according to members of Congress briefed by law enforcement this week.
A rangefinder is an instrument that can be used to help measure the distance to a target.
Local police initially spotted the gunman, who was acting strangely and had a backpack, about an hour before the shooting. They lost him in the crowd, but he was spotted again by the sniper.
Officers were alerted by radio about a suspicious person and searched the area where Crooks had perched his rifle on a rooftop.
Finding no one, one officer decided to check the roof. The officer was hoisted on to the roof by a colleague and came face-to-face with the suspect, Butler Township Manager Tom Knights told CBS.
The suspect pointed a rifle at him and the officer, who was in a "defenceless" position, let go from the roof and fell to the ground.
He then alerted others to the gunman. Moments later, the shooting started.
No weapon was spotted by law enforcement when Crooks was seen in the crowd and officials are trying to determine how no one saw his AR-style rifle.
Retracing his footsteps in the hours before the attack will be key to understanding how the shooting unfolded, officials say.
Officials told CBS that the semi-automatic rifle he used had been legally purchased by Crook's father in 2013.
When the gunman was found, he was carrying a remote detonator and his car contained explosives, law enforcement sources have told US media.
It continues to remain unclear what motivated the attack, and whether any political ideology is to blame.

Re: Trump assasination attempt
The USA is second following Brazil !
Gun Violence by Country 2024...
Gun violence is an ongoing concern all over the world, even in the world's safest countries—even, in fact, in countries where guns are illegal (though admittedly to a lesser degree). The rate of gun deaths per country varies widely, from 39.2 per 100k residents in El Salvador to roughly 1 in a million in Singapore, and is heavily influenced by the rate of civilian gun ownership per country and by each nation's gun control laws. Gun violence rates are realted to rates of violent crime, but do not necessarily move in parallel.
Gun violence is particularly prevalent in many South American and Central American countries, due to either civil unrest or drug cartels, which battle both law enforcement agencies and one another. It is also high in several developing countries in Africa and the Middle East. Finally, gun violence is considered an epidemic in the United States, which leads the world in mass shootings and has the highest levels of gun violence of any developed country by a wide margin.
While it is helpful to know a country's total number of gun deaths, it is vital to realize that different countries reach their totals in different ways and for different reasons. For example, the overwhelming majority of gun-related deaths in Brazil are homicides, typically a symptom of the country's rampant drug trade. By comparison, nearly two out of every three gun deaths in the United States is a suicide. Meanwhile, Guatemala owns the world's highest rate of unintentional/accidental gun deaths (see full data at page bottom).
More importantly, total numbers do not indicate the overall frequency of firearm-related deaths in a given country. To achieve a more accurate representation of the true level of gun violence in a given country, the total deaths must be divided from the total population of that country. This value is typically expressed in terms of the number of deaths per 100,000 residents. It is also often age-standardized, which is a process that takes into account the relative age of a country's population when computing the frequency of deaths (for example, a younger population may have the same rate of gun attacks, but a lower rate of fatalities than an older population).
Finally, the per-100k data for countries with smaller populations can be disproportionately impacted by small variations in the number of gun deaths from one year to the next. For example, a difference of just 13 fewer deaths per year in a heavily populated country such as the United States (323.1 million people in 2016) would have practically zero impact on its per-100k rate. However, 13 fewer gun-related deaths in Greenland (56,186 people in 2016) would have resulted in the country leading the world in gun safety instead of rubbing elbows with countries that post some of the highest murder rates in the world.

Re: Trump assasination attempt
Republicans turn heat up on Secret Service chief over Trump shooting...
Republican lawmakers are planning to return to Congress on Monday with the director of the Secret Service in their sights, as their frustration and anger grow over the agency's response to an assassination attempt against Donald Trump.
First on the agenda will be a House committee hearing on Monday with Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, which Speaker Mike Johnson said would make for "must-see TV" for Americans concerned about security lapses at the Pennsylvania rally.
"She's got a lot to answer for. And these concerns are bipartisan," Mr Johnson told CNN on Sunday.
Republicans, who control the House, have been unified in pushing Ms Cheatle to step down - or be fired - after a 20-year-old gunman was able to shoot the former president in the ear at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally last Saturday. Many of the lawmakers confronted her at the Republican convention last week, releasing videos of them demanding answers.
Her agency is charged with providing protection to more than the president and his family, including former presidents, others in line to the White House and political candidates.
US media is reporting that Trump had sought additional security in the months leading up to the assassination attempt, but the agency had turned them down or been unable to fulfill the requests due to staffing shortages. CBS News, BBC's news partner, has reported that Trump's security frustrations go back two years.
Agency spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement that "in some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications". That included relying on state and local law enforcement.
Eric Trump, the former president's son, said he had been calling for beefed up security throughout the campaign, as he blamed the Biden administration and Ms Cheatle on Sunday for the assassination attempt and argued there had been "no accountability" for the agency's actions.
"She should be out of a job," he told Fox News.
Speaking to CNN, Mr Johnson said that in addition to the House hearing, lawmakers on Monday would release more details about a bipartisan task force with subpoena authority charged with investigating the Secret Service's response.
"The initial excuses that [Ms Cheatle] has given for the lapses that happened last Saturday are just unbelievable, so we're going to get down to the bottom of it," he said.
Senators, too, are preparing to dig in on the Secret Service.
Republican Senator Ron Johnson told Fox News on Sunday that he would soon release "preliminary" information from his own report investigating the attack.
That report is intended to encourage people to come forward with more footage and firsthand accounts. He added that his investigation is now bipartisan, and will be conducted with Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut.

'You need to be fired' - Lawmakers lash out at Secret Service director
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers called on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to step down in the wake of the assassination attempt of Donald Trump.
The demand came during and after a tense House Oversight Committee hearing on Monday that questioned Ms Cheatle about her agency's security preparations ahead of a 13 July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that led to the attempt on Trump's life.
The shooting left one person dead and three other wounded - including the former president.
Monday's hearing was bruising for Ms Cheatle, as lawmakers ridiculed her answers and the lack of information the agency had made public, but it was also a rare show of bipartisanship on an increasingly polarised Capitol Hill.
For nearly six hours, members sought to answer lingering questions about the shooting, including how suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to get onto a nearby rooftop and why Trump was allowed to take the stage once a suspicious person was reported.
After the hearing, the leading Republican and Democrat from the committee - Reps James Comer and Jamie Raskin - sent a letter to Ms Cheatle that concretely laid out their belief that she should vacate her office.
"In the middle of a presidential election, the Committee and the American people demand serious institutional accountability and transparency that you are not providing," the letter says. "We call on you to resign as Director as a first step to allowing new leadership to swiftly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people."
While Ms Cheatle took responsibility during the hearing for the security lapses and acknowledged that the Butler incident marks "the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades", she left many lawmakers frustrated.
Ms Cheatle pushed back on calls to resign and said she remains "the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time".
The Secret Service director also answered few questions directly - citing the ongoing investigation.
"The American people have questions, [and] they deserve answers," Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer told Ms Cheatle during his closing.
"You were required to provide answers and, ma'am, you did not."
At times, the tense hearing on Monday seemed to devolve into fury. Lawmakers used expletives, shouted at the witness and questioned the director's honesty and competence.
"I'm disgusted by your performance," Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna said.
Ms Cheatle's answers seemed to continuously spark the ire of lawmakers on the committee, many of whom said she should be dismissed if she continued to refuse to resign.
"It looks like you won't answer some pretty basic questions," Ohio Republican Jim Jordan, a Trump ally, said. "And it looks like you cut corners when it comes to protecting one of the most well-known individuals on the planet."
Throughout the hearing, some Representatives groaned loudly, rolled their eyes, or muttered audibly in response to Cheatle's comments.
In one of the tensest moments of the hearing, South Carolina Republican Nancy Mace uttered a string of expletives in response to another one of Ms Cheatle's answers, specifically about how her opening remarks were leaked to US media outlets over the weekend.
"You are being dishonest or lying," Mace said. "You're just dodging!"
Another Republican, Georgia's Marjorie Taylor Greene, shouted at Ms Cheatle, referring to her as a "total failure".
"The entire country is demanding you resign," Ms Greene said.
Ms Cheatle also acknowledged that, to date, no Secret Service officers or employees have been disciplined for what took place in Butler.
According to Ms Cheatle, a preliminary report on the shooting will be released in the next 60 days - a timeline that committee members scoffed at.
Sixty days time before "Preliminary report" will be available to the public and press alike for scrutiny. Not good enough...

Re: Trump assasination attempt
this was screened in AU on monday evening. Whether it can be viewed outside of australia is another matter.
Trump and the future of the United States of America |Four Corners
It was immigration that Donald Trump was talking about on stage during the assassination attempt that left him bloodied and defiant – and it’s one of the fundamental issues currently dividing the United States, alongside the economy, abortion, and race.
Ahead of the presidential election in November, reporter Mark Willacy continues his journey across the country for a Four Corners special.
Already, the election campaign has seen some stunning turns, with President Joe Biden bowing out of the presidential race.
In Part 2, Four Corners explores the key issues in the battleground states, travelling to the frontline of the immigration crisis in Arizona’s wild southern desert where Trump wants to “stop the invasion” of migrants at the border with Mexico, as well as an abortion clinic which sees protestors gather almost daily.
Willacy visits Georgia, where political fractures have opened up in Black communities that were once a largely united voice, and he goes inside the Trump juggernaut — attending one of the former president’s rallies with fans who are steadfast in their belief that he will make America great again.

Re: Trump assasination attempt
Secret Service director has resigned following Congress hearing:
Yes , she deserved to go on the one level, despite an internal investigation that she says would be ready and made available "60 days"
But was she actually there, on site?
The hearing should have also called on the agents that was there and included the appointed secret service chief in that area.

Re: Trump assasination attempt
Just a question, can that same congress , call for a new hearing , only this time, with maybe two of the local secret service agents in particular, whoever it was that was in charge there?
