The Beatles - Chart Data- Sales Stats & Other Info

#1750214

Post by emjel »

Several months ago, when Apple re-issued the Abbey Road album as part of the continuing 50th Anniversary Beatles albums series, a post was created on the All Elvis forum entitled "Beatles Abbey Road Super Deluxe Set...Sony Wake Up!" ,

So for fans of The Beatles who were/are interested in this set, here is a year end update on Abbey Road, and how this album has done during 2019 along with other info regarding the groups sales for 2019.

In the US Billboard chart for last two weeks for 2019, it sold around 21,000 vinyl copies. For the final two weeks of 2019, sales for the album inc streams totalled 33,493.

Total US Sales for 12 weeks up to 27/12/2019 including streams for the re-issued release are 260,956.

Total US Sales for the year including both the On Catalogue version and the re-issue are over 600,000 copies.

Total U.K. Sales for 2019 are around 110,000, with 85,000 coming from the September re-issue.

Total Worldwide sales of the re-issued set from September 2019 are nearly 500,000 copies.

Abbey Road has been named as the US’s biggest-selling VINYL LP of the 2010s, shifting more than 558,000 copies. The Top 10, compiled by Nielsen Music, is comprised almost entirely of old albums, from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (2), Bob Marley and the Wailers’ Legend (4), The Beatles Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (7) and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (9), but no Elvis.

It is estimated that Abbey Road has now sold well over 13 million copies in the US (already certified 12 million) and 33 million worldwide since 1969.

Moving away from Abbey Road, these are some sales stats for other albums in 2019.

The "1" Album - 440,000
Sgt Pepper - 112,000
The White Album - 98,000

The White Album was RIAA certified 24x Multi-Platinum (12 million sales) on February 21, 2019, earning the spot as the fourth top-certified album of all time.

Also certified in 2019

The Beatles 1967-1970 at 17 x Platinum - Worldwide Sales approaching 24 million.

The Beatles 1962-1966 at 15X Platinum - Worldwide Sales approaching 21 million

The "1" album at 11 x Platinum (expected to be upgraded to 12 x Platinum during 2020 as total sales at the end of 2018 were 12,907,979. with Worldwide Sales approaching 32 million. Billboard announced in April 2019 that The Beatles "1" album has reached 600 overall weeks in the Top 200 since it was released in November 2000.

Sgt. Pepper at 11 x Platinum - Worldwide Sales approaching 34 million.

In the Top 10 Artists in US for 2019, The Beatles were at #10 Beatles with 2,262,400 album sales.

For the U.K., there is not so much information from the OCC regarding sales numbers.

Abbey Road has sold around 85,000 copies of the re-issue since the end of September and is currently still in the charts at #52.

The OCC have it listed at #5 in Top 40 U.K. vinyl album sales for 2019.

Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was the UKs 8th Best Selling Vinyl Album for 2019.

Spotify Data

At the time of writing, The Beatles have 21,368,595 Monthly Listeners and 14, 838,869 Followers
Here Comes The Sun is currently the top Beatles song on Spotify having been streamed 404,978,241 times with Come Together over 267,000.

The following records received BPI awards in 2019 basically for streaming and downloads as physical product of certain songs is not available. Of course there are several records listed here which were originally released as singles long before the release dates shown here eg I Want To Hold Your Hand and whilst this silver award is for sales of 200,000 copies, the record has sold significantly more - In fact with advance orders exceeding one million copies in the UK, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" would have gone straight to the top of the British record charts on its day of release (29 November 1963) had it not been blocked by the group's first million-seller "She Loves You", their previous UK single, which was having a resurgence of popularity following intense media coverage of the group following their TV appearances on Sunday Night At The London Palladium and the Royal Variety Show Performance. Two weeks after release, it knocked "She Loves You" off the top. Total sales are now over 1.6 million in the UK with worldwide sales of over 12 million.

Good one emjel ::rocks

These stats are pretty impressive and augurs well for 60th anniversaries for "Help" "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" albums in 2025, 2026.

In all honesty, I do not think they will wait for 60th anniversary. I think they will do Revolver for a 55th anniversary release and the others will come "as and when". 2025 is a long way to wait for original Beatles fans. Just like Elvis fans, the market is diminishing as each year goes by and of course the further we go back to the earlier albums, there is less opportunity to be creative on new mixes. I am curious to know where MMT is likely to fit into these deluxe releases.

A little piece of news about the forthcoming Let It Be movie has surfaced.

Jeff Jones from Apple says "We have created a brand-new film that will attempt to bust the myth that the ‘Let It Be’ sessions were the final nail in the Beatles’ coffin". A few minutes of some of the new footage was shown at the Grammy weekend with Variety making the following observation -

An amazing counter-narrative to “Let It Be” film has ensued: It’s brighter both visually and spiritually, with many, many shots of the Beatles joking around, making fun of each other, singing in silly accents and generally indulging in vintage Moptop hijinks. It also features many scenes of the group rehearsing songs from the “Abbey Road” album — their true swan song, which would be recorded over the following summer — and even rough versions of songs that would appear on solo records. On the basis of this clip, Beatles fans will lose their minds over this film.

The Beatles: Abbey Road - Other Records & Chart Stats

Post by emjel »

A Few Updates

Neilsen reports that last year, The Beatles albums together had on-demand audio streams of 2,615,019,000 in the USA alone.

Abbey Road continues to be placed in Billboard 200 chart at #97 and the U.K. Top 100 chart at #47 and is still showing in Australian and various European charts since it was re-issued in September last year. The "1" album is also on the Billboard chart at #87 and Sgt Pepper is at #74 on the Album Sales Chart.

Eight Days A Week is back up to #11 in this weeks U.K. Video chart and has now been on chart for 167 weeks since it was released at the end of 2016.

On Spotify, the group currently has over 21.1 million monthly listeners and their followers have increased from 14.3 million to 15.1 million. Interesting to note that Elvis who had a surge to over 22 million monthly listeners over the Xmas period has now dropped back down to just over 10.7 million which is slightly up on the 10.6 million prior to Xmas and 3.8 million followers which is more or less level.

This week, The Beatles have the following four albums in various UK Charts. It really is incredible to see the ground-breaking Sgt Pepper still continuing to sell in today's market. Released in 1967, the album won four Grammy Awards in 1968, including Album of the Year, the first rock LP to receive this honour. With certified sales of 5.2 million copies, it is the third-best-selling album in UK chart history. As of 2018, it had sold more than 33 million copies worldwide, making it one of the highest-selling albums of all time.
