This infamous soap is oft referred to as "when Australian TV lost its virginity" its been stated many times.
NUMBER 96 was originally broadcast on 0-10 Network from 13th March 1972 - 11th August 1977.
In short, the series was ahead of it's time simply because they pushed the boundaries with regular use of nude scenes (however not on these early episodes ) ,an interracial affair, rape , serial murder (the pantyhose strangler) and gay storylines resulting in high TV ratings.
I thought i would post a few shows here as i'm not at all sure if any other country in 1972 ever had a regular TV soap that went to these extremes.
So would it be correct to say that Number 96 was the first ever TV soap/series that broke all the conventional rules of soap opera, conjuring up groundbreaking stories that was not seen on television before anywhere in the world?
Plus it ties in with my year-long avatar salute to the year 1972 on FECC, too
Good write-up here for you...and I -

good one swedish.
But my friend, i was referring to Television series and soap opera only, but not just nude scenes. Number 96 can be likened to X-rated version of UK series Coronation Street
Since you mention feature films, SBS TV channel over here, around ten years ago, did play the two swedish "Curious" films made in 1967. You now the ones?
They were both controversial for their time, ehhh

This here is a 107 minutes compilation that looks at Number 96 AU television soap-opera controversial storylines i talked about in the OP. Whether it plays outside of australia is another matter, however.
Must've been the only TV series of it's kind made anywhere in the world.
