Re: Natalie´s Dates With Elvis (1957 article)
The fool, this is, as per usual, superb: thank you.
Do you think the pensive double-page spread photo is by Wertheimer (the multi-pose Sullivan photos are a delight too) ?
The "Giant" story was certainly new to me.

The photo could be by Wertheimer, but I´m not sure about it. I don´t remember seeing that photo before.
Edit:
I just noticed photo credits on page 4. It is a Wertheimer photo.

Indeed, as with all of his shares, this is another treat from The fool, thank you so much.George Smith wrote:The fool, this is, as per usual, superb: thank you.

My first thought was that the pensive photo of Elvis was made by journalist Jock Carroll in New York on 7-01-1956, outside the Hudson Theater. Here's another example:
https://anguscarroll.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/on-the-brink-of-fame/
But maybe it was taken at Penn Station earlier that day by Al Wertheimer:
I wish we could see more of the background, but if the magazine credits him, it must be so.
The photo of Elvis with 1956 Tupelo stage crasher Judy Hopper (blonde teenaged gal) is new to my eyes. The Sullivan rehearsal montage of Elvis delivering "Hound Dog," from 10-28-1956, looks new to my eyes as well. Ditto the cute shot of him bussing friend Judy Spreckels in Las Vegas in April 1956.
If Elvis did want to see "Giant" while in New York that October, it had to have been a bit of a squeeze since he wasn't in town all that long. No doubt the "Hollywood friend" who wanted to meet him for lunch, Nick Adams, was also the one pushing for the movie viewing, since he had a role in the film.
The second article, focusing on the dates with Natalie Wood in Memphis, reveal that Dewey Phillips interviewed them on the air at WHBQ Radio when they went by the Hotel Chisca late one evening, probably 10-31-1956. It's too bad a tape wasn't preserved, it would be such a hoot to hear it today. And then Elvis' crew went to go eat at the Gridiron Restaurant, across from the Hotel Peabody, that's also interesting.
It's news to me as well that the next day they all saw the Jack Lemmon film, "You Can't Run Away From It." This was, in essence, a remake of Frank Capra's wonderful 1934 comedy, "It Happened One Night." Note to George Smith: the Four Aces sing the title song in this 1956 Columbia release!
And it's neat to read during the rest of the visit the gang also took in such movies as "Between Heaven and Hell" (starring Natalie's soon-to-be-boyfriend and later husband Robert Wagner), "The Boss" (starring John Payne and written by the legendary Dalton Trumbo under a pseudonym) and "The Bowery Boys In Las Vegas" (actually called "Crashing Las Vegas," and the last with Leo Gorcey).

And it seems almost unbelievable that they went to a city council meeting on "a car driving range for teen-agers" and that Elvis spoke to promote safe driving! Or that the friends rumbled all Saturday through Mississippi on Elvis' motorcycles.
The article claims Natalie was there from Wednesday (10-31) to Wednesday (11-07), and that she and Nick Adams flew home at that point. Good to have the dates in order!
A very crazy week in the life of Elvis, detailed just that much more, 59 years to the day. Thank you again.
P.S. Why the half-pages for a couple of the scans? I love seeing every ad!

Actually, those half-pages are both on page 52 of the magazine. The upper part is the end of the first article, and the lower part of the page is the Natalie Wood article. I thought it would be more convenient to post them separately like that.drjohncarpenter wrote: P.S. Why the half-pages for a couple of the scans? I love seeing every ad!
This photo by Al Wertheimer was taken just before of after the one in the magazine.drjohncarpenter wrote: My first thought was that the pensive photo of Elvis was made by journalist Jock Carroll in New York on 7-01-1956, outside the Hudson Theater. Here's another example:

Neat! Is this from somewhere in Penn Station?
