Re: When was this taken? Is it real?
Could be, but are you 100% sure? The light hair might be because of the flash. The picture is taken from really close and apperantly the flash went of right into his face.
Elvis picked up a guitar and he started playing. Talking at a mile a minute.
He said, "I want you to understand me,
because this is a moment in time
where we all have to understand each other."

Well, it's not a great look at the image. And it's hidden away in a private FB group:
ELVIS: A Celebration of the Man and his Music
https://www.facebook.com/groups/CelebratingElvis/
And this dude says he has the original copy:
https://www.facebook.com/stephen.shutts
Maybe someone ask him for more information?
My guess is that it's a silly candid taken when Elvis was at home in Memphis from July 20-28, 1956.

Not fake. Here is another one taken at about the same time, probably at Audubon Drive, maybe July 56

That photo isn't from 1034 Audubon Drive in Memphis and it's not from July 1956.
There are clues that It's Elvis at Paramount Studios in January 1957, trying on various pieces of wardrobe.

Re: When was this taken? Is it real?
I think it's almost certainly real.
Look at the distinctive wood panelling in the background. It's the same as in this photo taken by Alfred Wertheimer in the rec room of Audubon Drive with cousins Billy and Bobby Smith.
