THAT TAPE....
A nice compliment from Keith Richards jr this evening
with regards to the Vault series, fuelled me to do the
little story behind the 1954 Sun tape pictured on the
previous page 5. Paul Madsen and I had done research
in Memphis in 82 for the book I was working on at the
time : Long Lonely Highway. We had met up with 2
people from Memphis working for the Phillips Family:
Debbie and Richard. "When you guys come back to
Memphis, in the future, youre welcome to stay over
at my place", Richard had said in 82...
And we did go back to Memphis, in 1984, continuing
our search into Elvis' early days.
On our 2nd night at Richard's place he invited us
to join him that night for the weekly music jam taking
place at Sam's studio on Madison. Special guests
that night were Rocky Burnette, son of the legen-
dary Johnny Burnette of "The Rock 'n' Roll Trio"
fame ( Lonesome Train a.o. ) Plus the great and
legendary Paul Burleson, who'd rocked many riffs on
the 1950s "RnR Trio" recordings...
Among the many guests sitting in that night, was
Debbie: squeaky voice and tambourine.
It was fun meeting up with her again after 2 years.
After a night of great Rock n Roll and Jack Daniels,
Debbie asked if we would like a private tour on
the first floor of the Studio... "Thats where they
store the tapes..." Debbie working in the Studio
off and on, had the keys to all rooms and offices
upstairs. All excited by the invitation we first dug
into the many boxes and drawers in Sam's old
private office. Now long deserted and dusty...
The mountains of old historical paper memorabilia
went as far back as 1956... But nothing connected
to Elvis' 18 months with Sun... There were
some really nice original print proofs for early Sun
Cash, Perkins and Lewis eps and albums,
contracts, cheques ( tons of them) , but no Elvis.
Next was the tapes storage room. There were
old tapes ( Perkins) but for the most part tapes
from the 60s and 70s... ( lots by Billy Lee Riley).
Around the time we left at 4 in the morning,
Debbie mentioned the existence of a small
1950s Elvis tape she had been asked by Stan
Kesler recently to store away... All of a sudden
we were wide awake again!
"I'll look it up tomorrow, and have it copied onto
cassette, for you guys to listen to", Deb said.
We returned to the Studio the following night,
and there was Debbie holding a very old
tape... It came with a recent written list of the
songs and other bits and pieces featured on
the tape... Debbie played us the cassette ,
and soon it became clear this was the stuff
released 10 years earlier on the bop cat
bootleg "Good Rockin' Tonight"... But this
was the real thing. Not a dub from the boot.
"Just Because" turned out to be "I Don't Care
If The Sun Don't Shine"...
To this day, the outakes featured on this
tape ( god knows where it is now?) are still
being dubbed from the old vinyl boot, from
35 plus years ago. But at one time, as late
as 1984, it was available on reel to reel...

Great story Ger, and very interesting about Sam's studio having jams there on evenings. What I'd give to be in either 706 or 639 to hear a recording - any recording - being made. Them studios, especially 706, are two things I think of when I think of Memphis.

This is incorrect.

Sunrise (BMG, 1999) used a tape source for the two incomplete outtakes and master of "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine."

When you go to the former page there's a post from Roy with a subtitle " Smelly paper". There are 3 pictures beneath that subtitle. I read it in the first one (the left one, where you can see Elvis and Barbara walking down the street).

No, mr carpenter, I m not incorrect by making
my statement. Blue Moon Of Kentucky and the
part of I 'll Never Let You Go to this day are
released by the official label dubbed from
another source than from recording tape...
And you know as well as I do : I Dont Care If
The Sun Dont Shine (master) from Sam's
tape have been around since the 50s. It
wasnt 'new' on "Sunrise". If the false starts
to "I Don't Care If The..." are indeed from
tape, it still gives the other 2 mentioned
(by me) titles as not from tape source, but
from the bopcat 1970s album release.

I am a lost for words gentlemen, so I will just say "Thank You" for your hard work and effort in putting this all together for Elvis fans to see, over 3 threads at this point.

I wasnt at all sure about the Dennis The Menace
item myself , ( for the record : I write all the captions,
James does other important things...).
Still Im intrigued by them German guys ( yes, they
are crooks, no doubt) to have the lively fantasy
picking up a Dennis pocketbook and add text to
a featured cartoon that could well have triggerd
Elvis to make such a comment, had it been his
own copy...! After all, its fact Elvis liked comicbooks
for quite a long time. Im sure youve seen the photo
of him in 61, in Hawaii, reading a copy of Mad
magazine...?
Anybody who happens to have that 61 photo to
put up here? Hilton perhaps?

Did Elvis really write that set-list by himself in 1971?
Some odd choices but definately some great ones!

Promised Land wasnt recorded till years
later, and Ive never heard him do that
title on stage 'till 1974... right?
On top of the list it sez "Tell Me Way" ,
did he had Tell Me Why in mind, to be
performed accompanying himself on

I agree that 1971 seems odd, it is seen at the bottom left on the paper, as Promised Land wasn´t recorded until 1973 but who knows what went through Elvis mind.
Some of the other songs were recorded 1970 or 71 so that makes sense!

To N8: Are you sure this set-list is genuine?
