I am a lost for words gentlemen, so I will just say "Thank You" for your hard work and effort in putting this all together for Elvis fans to see, over 3 threads at this point. This is what FECC was meant for,..... intelligent Elvis conversation, loads of Elvis information and super rare Elvis pictures to boot,
I'm with PEP.
SENSATIONAL work by Mr Rijff & Mr Roy.

Perhaps this was a shortlist of songs to be rehearsed for inclusion in his upcoming November 1971 tour.

"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was heard at two shows: Baltimore (November 9) and Dallas (November 13).

He was obviously giving Elvis Is Back! a few spins at that time:

Like A Baby - cut in Apr '60
Such A Night - cut in Apr '60
Reconsider Baby - cut in Apr '60
Fever - cut in Apr '60
Going on the assumption that the date on the note is accurate (sometimes people misremember the dates, even years), it is likely that EP was brainstorming for improvements / additions to his show. In fact, given the circumstances of 1971 - EP was on a post-Jaycees high and had just negotiated a salary increase for his Tahoe shows - I think that both the year and the circumstances fit very well.

Definitely a rare glimpse into EP's mind and one that is counter to much of established lore.

I think the critical question to be explored here is why EP trashed it. Insecurities, cold-feet, too much trouble, nixed by The "Col.", etc. . . . . . ? EP very rarely sat down and set pen to paper, so something lit a fire in EP . . . . . but what put it out?

----------

Just to add some additional thoughts on a different subject . . .

Re: The Gladys Note on this thread.

I'm not so sure that this was written by Gladys, because she had very bad penmanship (almost like she never learned how to write). Rather I tend to think it was written for Gladys (ie: her words), by somebody else, on her behalf.

I was told at one time that this shirt that Elvis wore on the cover of the album was from George Klein's collection. I don't know if is still in his collection or he has sold it. In 1997 I was told he still owned it and was asking around 30k for it.

Thank you for the follow-up.

So many of the songs shortlisted could have been so good in concert.

Perhaps what hit him was extraneous external circumstances, not the least of which was the impending dissolution of his marriage to Priscilla Beaulieu.

Indeed Piers, it gives pathetic jealous people
in every walk of life... and on every hobby site.
And now for something completely different :
Anybody remember Bruno Tillander from Sweden?
Somewhere, back in the 80s, he had build his own
Elvis Museum. On his way back from a trip to the
US, Bruno dropped by at my place to pick up
EPE memorabilia he wanted to put on display
in his museum. After he had gone thru my stuff,
and made a choice what to take home, he
opened his suitcase and told me to sit down...
Out of his suitcase came 3 items he had
picked up from various people in the US :
a red sweater I vaguely recognised from a
Loving You 1957 photo session. He put a
picture next to the zipped up sweater for proof.
I got my camera.
Must find the photo I took that day, for future
inclusion here....
Next he unwrapped a pair of the leather pants
Elvis had worn on stage during the 1974 Vegas
summer season... ( sorry, didnt take a photo
of the pants ) and last but not least he care-
fully unfolded the 'classic' purple striped shirt
as worn by Elvis in 56, that ended up on the
cover of the 2nd album "Elvis" !
I held it up and asked Bruno to take pictures.
I remember thinking : "geez, thats a small size"!
Bruno had to catch a plane to Sweden that
afternoon, and after some more chat he had
to wrap things up, and say goodbye.
That was the last Ive ever seen of the shirt...
If my memory serves me well, the shirt went
back to George Klein after the exhibition in
Bruno's museum. Has Klein still have it, and
whatever happened to Bruno...?
We lost contact a long, long time ago.

Yes, I helped him with his exhibition here in Finland in 1988.

Maybe it was this one? I made notes at the exhibition, but unfortunately I have nothing on this sweater.

At the time, in 1988, the owner of this suit was Elvis´ jeweler Lowell G. Hays.

This shirt was insured for $12.000. There was also another shirt, from the movie Frankie And Johnny, that belonged to George Klein.

Ger,

Bruno is still kicking in Sweden. The shirt btw is back in the USA, where it was sold. I know Paul Simon once offered crazy money for this shirt as "Elvis" is Simon's alltime ELVIS album.
Ger you are the man, don't let in to THE pretender.

Gonna get stinking drunk tonite first.
After last night's party and all the fun
we had here, a bottle of Southern Comfort
will surely bring me back in the mood to
continue fully armed again tomorrow.
Willem, thanks man.
James will hopefully be back to join the
party in a week from now. He's gonna
be surprised to see the mountain of
photos & goodies waiting for him at
home that needs scanning...!
Have a save journey home James!
