By the mid 1960s, The Sunset Strip had become a place dominated by young members of the hippie and rock and roll counterculture. While this brought many artistic initiatives to the neighborhood, problems simultaneously arose in the form of alcohol and drug abuse and the disturbance of traffic.


In 1966, the city's administration implemented a handful of measures to curtail the growing nuisance. They targeted the Strip's most prominent rock club, the Whisky a Go Go, forcing its managers to change its name to the Whisk .

Furthermore, annoyed residents and business owners in the district had encouraged the passage of strict (10:00 p.m.) curfew and loitering laws to reduce the traffic congestion resulting from crowds of young club patrons.

This is Jimmy the Chimp from 1959, who loves a smoke.

This was shown on one of our national news TV broadcaster yesterday, believe it or not. By the looks of this, he was a character. Bless him. The chimpanzee died from a heart attack at the age of only 16 in 1968.
A taxidermist was called in and the remains are now part of a 64,000 mammal species collection held for research purposes at the West Australian Museum.

September 1902 - Fair in North England, Leeds (speed corrected w/ added sound)

This is an agricultural fair in Leeds in September of 1902. It's a strange look at time long since past, and it has survived in real good condition. The uploader Mr guy jones has put in some sound ambience and atmosphere to give it the feeling of peeking through a time machine...this is likely as close as we'll ever get!
The film is from the Mitchell and Kenyon collection. Enjoy

This is a few miles down the road from me, in a place called Roundhay Park. True Crime lovers will be interested to know that this is the site of one of the Yorkshire Ripper murders, which took place 75 years later in February 1977.

“NOBODY’S CHILDREN" - 1946 FILM ABOUT ADOPTION SOCIAL WORKERS ORPHANAGE XD43364

This black and white short subject "Nobody's Children" was released in late 1946. The film concerns the process of child adoption in America and centers on The Calahans, a fictional, childless couple living in Hampstead, New York. After deciding they wish to adopt an infant, the film follows the Calahans from their first meetings with doctors through to when they bring their new infant home. Also shown are examples of couples who should not be permitted to adopt (middle-aged, selfish, or impatient couples, for instance), as well as the downfalls of taking the “black market” adoption route. By studying the closeups of the adoption forms shown in the film, we can extrapolate the suburban scenes were shot at 52 and 56 Lewis Place in Hampstead, NY.

The March of Time was an American short film series sponsored by Time Inc. and shown in movie theaters and schools from 1935 to 1951. Each entry in the series was either a two- or three-reel film (20 or 30 minutes). Westbrook Van Voorhis, who hosted the radio program of the same name, served as narrator.
At its peak The March of Time was seen by 25 million U.S. moviegoers a month.

Found this 28 minutes documentary about London , produced in 1970 titled "The Living City". I guess it fits the spirit of this topic -

Lovely images of the Square Mile are shown, includes the St. Bartholomew's Hospital, the London Stock Exchange, Lloyds of London and the Port of London.

Hospital service in Bromley, Kent. Shovelling coal into furnace, pile of coal in yard, chimney-stack. Loading laundry, folding sheets etc. Mother is given baby by nurse, holds it, baby put into cot, baby is dried, mother in labour is given gas, nurse feeds baby with syringe. Four children eating at table, nurse feeds infant. Children in hospital. Kids in classroom, kids play with blocks, rocking-horses etc. Woman pushed in wheelchair. Christmas party, tree, kids etc. Nurses practise bandaging on model heads, nurses being taught to pour medicine. Black nurse under instruction.

As this 'Relics' thread develops , i reckon it would be cool if we find and feature historical vid's of our hospitals and medical care in the various countries , in particular the U.K. Canada, New Zealand, The Netherlands, U.S.A, Germany and of course, Australia. The day of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, a group of Hollywood actors talk about the meaning of civil rights, in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 28, 1963.
