R.I.P Vin Scully
Seems like it's that time when one famous star fades another follows. Now I'm probably not the person to post this, since I'm a cardinal fan, and I never knew his true impact on the game until the last decade, but it's hard not to feel for something as big as this. Good luck Vin, may you find peace with your wife whereever you might be.

Vin Scully was the play-by-play man on CBS-TV the day the 49ers defeated the Cowboys in the NFC championship game, January 1982.
He called "The Catch"!
One of many amazing career moments in his broadcasting career.

Re: R.I.P Vin Scully
Yes, he called the game with Hank Stram as a consolation prize for losing out a competition between himself and Pat Summerall to see who would be paired with John Madden as CBS' number one NFL team. Summerall and Madden would call Super Bowl XVI two weeks later. He left CBS after after that game and become NBC's top announcer for their MLB Game of the Week.drjohncarpenter wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 8:11 am1015elvis wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 8:08 amSeems like it's that time when one famous star fades another follows. Summerall, by the way, called the 1981 NFC Championship on CBS Radio with Jack Buck. Summerall served as the color man for that broadcast.
He was one of the best -- if not the best -- baseball announcers. He knew exactly when to let the pictures do the talking. Best example is his call at the end of Game 6 of the World Series after Ray Knight scored the winning run when did not speak for 103 second.
“If one picture is worth a thousand words, you have seen about a million words.”
P.S. Here's the full Jack Buck and Pat Summerall broadcast of "The Catch" game.

I'll remember that voice forever.

The United States of America have had
forty-six Presidents, but only ONE King!
Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.
You're a beautiful audience.

The greatest sports broadcaster ever. So many memorable calls. I'm a Red Sox fan, but I'd watch any game he had the call for, often staying up for Dodger games on the West Coast (much like I do for Padres games now). A true one of one.

Do you listen to Padres games because of Don Orsillo?SteamrollerBlues wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 8:37 pmThe greatest sports broadcaster ever. So many memorable calls. Re: R.I.P Vin Scully
That's definitely how my Padres fandom started. I'll never forgive NESN for breaking up Remy and Orsillo for no good reason. Don's excellent. And the Padres have been a really interesting watch the last few years. Especially now since they have Juan Soto and Tatis should be back soon. They have a must see lineup right now, and it's really impressive.Mike C wrote: ↑Thu Aug 04, 2022 4:00 amDo you listen to Padres games because of Don Orsillo?SteamrollerBlues wrote: ↑Wed Aug 03, 2022 8:37 pmThe greatest sports broadcaster ever. Yes, Orsillo is quite good. Padres look to be making a run.SteamrollerBlues wrote: ↑Thu Aug 04, 2022 9:42 amThat's definitely how my Padres fandom started.
