Elvis Says Hello To Line Renaud --> July 1968 !

#1159326

Post by drjohncarpenter »

The date of this lovely photo with Line Renaud, legendary French singer, actress and activist, has always been sketchy.

Not any more!

This may have even been taken on July 2nd, which marked the French chanteuse's 40th birthday. Elvis was 33 and looking good. He'd just completed his NBC-TV special, which would air in December.

Renaud first met the singer in 1959-60, when Presley was in Paris on army leave, and he caught her popular "Casino de Paris" revue then:

Fast-forward eight years, Presley had just completed his NBC-TV special on June 30th, and had about a week free before having to begin filming his next movie, "Charro!" Clearly, he spent a little time in his favorite vacation city, Las Vegas, and again enjoyed her "Casino de Paris" program, this time at the Dunes Hotel.

It was something Renaud had presented in Vegas from December 1963 to December 1965, and she'd just rolled into town in mid-June to again star in the show.

New Dunes Act for Line Renaud

LAS VEGAS -- French singing star Line Renaud returns to the headliner spot in Casino de Paris at the Dunes Hotel on Tuesday, June 25, replacing Rouvaun who's embarking on an extensive concert tour.

Now busily rehearsing her new act at the Dunes, Miss Line Renaud starring in the Versailles Room, led an ovation for ringsiding Red and he did likewise for the comedienne at the completion of her first show. Skelton opened the next evening at the Sands.

It was a Riviera first for Miss Diller, who was dressed in a spangled mini-costume with shocking pink accessories. She allowed as how she looked like "a thatched hut on stilts."

The summer 1968 return to the Dunes earned a nice review in the L.A. paper, perhaps it inspired Elvis to see it during his time off?

Interestingly, I also found that the cute photo of the two singers, it turns out, was cropped. Acting great Edward G. Robinson was also there to say hello to Line.

One wonders exactly how the chit-chat fared for this unlikely trio of stars.

"Où est l'hôtel?" Heh.

BONUS BEARD FUN

It looks like Elvis continued to vacation in Vegas when he wasn't working on his new film. A news report indicates he caught the Ed Ames/Jan Murray bill at the Riviera Hotel in mid-July, the booking starting on July 9th.

Tall Girl Is Top Beauty

LAS VEGAS — Tall (5-11) British beauty Jackie Hewitt won the annual "Miss Showgirl International" contest held at the Desert Inn. Nineteen showgirls, representing each hotel in Vegas and seven countries, vied for the title.

Judges were Line Renaud, Rusty Warren, Jan Murray, Jack Carter, Harry James, Woody Woodbury, Bob Newhart. and this columnist . . .

Elvis Presley, Milton Berle, Jerry Lewis, Ed Ames, Tony Martin, and David Janssen were among the celebs who caught Jan Murray's very funny show before he closed at the Riviera lounge . . .

And this candid could well be from the Riviera after seeing the show. Anyone know more?

Those without a life try to take down other people's efforts and work.
Why do you do that, man? I don't understand it.
Doc starts a thread about Elvis, and something that happened to him, and there is rank, cynical nastiness about it for no good reason. Why can't people be nicer around here?

What is striking in those photos is we see three major entertainment stars, but one is shining brightest -- our guy. And Elvis isn't even trying hard.

These photos have been given several dates in 1968 and 1969, but the newspaper blurb, and Elvis' appearance make it clear the dating I posted is correct.

Thanks Frankie, too. Please ignore the topic derailer.

Iam sure that we are all entralled by the knowledge that Elvis had a photo taken with a barely remembered french singer.

Devotees of 'Allo 'Allo would be interested in part of he wikipedia entry "During the Second World War, .......... Her grandmother had a cafe in Armentières, where she used to sing for the passing german soldiers". :D

When have had a few years on this board you will understand

I have little time for a poster who has driven many fine people from this board.....another one a few days ago.

And I will not put up with snide comments to all those who dare disagree with any self appointed sage who never admits when he is wrong.

Then why are you bothering to reply on this thread? Perhaps you should go and spend your time somewhere else where they'll appreciate your daft comments.

And yet it seems you are not above making them.

What a loser.

Thanks for the interesting post Doc.

I mused in an off topic thread some time ago about Elvis and Bogart, seeing Elvis and Edward G Robinson together (Robinson costarred with Bogie in Key Largo and several other movies) makes me smile. Thanks Doc!

Thanks very much.

The dating of these photos has bugged me for a long while.

Vince -- thanks for the link with all the great Renaud information.

Line is still with us, going strong at 81.

In fact, given that her birthday is July 2, perhaps these photos were part of a 40th birthday bash: July 2, 1968.

Another shocking discovery? The NBC Special was now held in 1969?
