The ABC Elvis TV series from 1990

#1316374

Post by gantonicel@aol.com »

Anyone remember the Elvis TV series that aired back in 1990 and starred Michael St Girard ? I liked the show and wondered why we haven't seen it on DVD yet. I thought it gave a fairly accurate dramatic depiction of the
Elvis' s early days .

There are quite a few threads on that mini-series.

Here's one:

The show failed to gain an audience and had low ratings, why would anyone bother to put it out on DVD? I didnt think it very good like most Elvis bios.

I found a website several years ago that was offering this series on an unofficial DVD-R and it turns up on dealer tables at collectors fairs occasionally.

No, it was not horrible at all. It's actually the most accurate Elvis biopic there has been to date. It has a good 7.4 rating on IMDb. The 1979 Elvis movie starring Kurt Russell, which is nowhere near as accurate but still pretty good, has a 7.1 rating. Maybe the "Last Train to Memphis" project that Mick Jagger is involved in will be even better than those two movies. We'll see.

The 2005 Elvis movie has a fabulous cast, uses the original recordings by Elvis, and a lot of the film's script is based on Peter Guralnick's books. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is pretty convincing as Elvis. He actually won a Golden Globe for his performance. I agree that his acting in the finale was a bit stiff, though. You've got to see the fantastic Randy Quaid as Colonel Tom Parker. The role earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Camryn Manheim is also really good as Elvis' mother. She also was nominated for a Golden Globe. Then there's Robert Patrick (of Terminator 2 fame) as Elvis' father (he also played Johnny Cash's father in Walk the Line) and the pretty Rose McGowan as Ann-Margret. The movie is a winner in my book.

I have not seen the 1990 mini-series yet. Will it ever be released on DVD? I don't think so.

The Mini-series had the worst performance by an imitator in a film that I've seen (well, almost). Conversely, the 1990 TV series was well-done, and I was sorry that didn't capture an audience -- and I prefer the '70s!

The 2005 miniseries had a few things going in it's favor; Strong supporting cast, great detail to wardrobe and instruments and that was pretty much it.

Rhys-Meyers is a good actor but he could not lip synch to save his life.

Also the recordings when it was supposed to be a "live" performance did not fool anyone. There are effects to help facilitate this, why it wasn't done...?

Finally, did anyone catch that the guy who played Scotty looked more like Bill and vice versa? :smt003

The recreation of If I Can Dream in that 2005 production was cringe inducing. Rhys Meyers was not right here. I hated the whole thing.

The storyline was interesting. But Rhys-Meyers movements of Elvis Presley on stage was one on the most embarrassing moments ever filmed in the history of movie making since Thomas Edison first put a patented on a Kinetograph that first publicly exhibited in 1891. Yes he was THAT BAD! :smt104

Don't believe me just watch him do "If I Can Dream" just once if you can make it through it..

I hated that Jonathan rhys Myers film. I'll never watch it again. One thing that made me laugh were the recreated GI blues and Elvis is back album covers with his face on them instead of Elvis'!! :facep:
