Thank you for sharing this with us.
What a lovely article by David Marchese. He writes regularly and well for New York magazine, among others (Vulture, Spin, Salon.com, Village Voice, Guilt & Pleasure, Pitchfork, PopMatters).

His American Sound overview, "American Idol," is spot-on, and very readable. The photos are gorgeous, too. These lines from Marchese's essay really jumped out:
If OK, I am going to add this topic link and a photo from it to my recent Chips Moman topic.
Thanks again!

The Colonel's preference for Nashville was derived from a preference for making money.
"Chips understood Elvis," says (Jim) Dickinson. "They were both Southern guys who grew up poor, listening to country, gospel, and R&B. He knew what would work for Elvis; he knew what would move him. Because of that, Chips could get the best out of Elvis."
Prior to working with Moman, Elvis had been inclined to take a sing-it-and-run approach in the studio, with the sloth having set in to such a degrees that rather than make extra work, (Felton) Jarvis kept quiet even when Elvis flubbed notes. But Moman was different.
If OK, I am going to add this topic link and a photo from it to my recent Chips Moman topic.
Thanks again!

Thank you for posting this amazing article. Sadly American is no longer standing, what a shame. Chips was just the sort of Producer Elvis needed. I drove around there on a trip to Memphis and it was a vacant lot. Even more of a shame is the fact Elvis never got to record there again. I disagree though with the authors "writing off" Elvis' Stax work in its entirety, there were a few great tracks recorded there IMHO. Oh well .... thanks again for sharing.
By the way there is a book on America Studios I saw on Amazon called "Memphis Boys: The Story of American Studios".

The Fool, I adore your sub-forum, it's one of the very best things of this whole forum. When I leave certain heated threads in other subforums and visit your forum, it's always extremely rewarding. Very much appreciated! I also thank DJC for his regular additional insights and extensions. Great stuff to view that I hope will be available on this forum (at least) for as long as the FECC forum exists.
Joe Krein interview with Sherril Nielsen: "YOU KNOW YOU FORGET HOW GOOD HE REALLY WAS. I SAID MY GOODNESS. YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE WITH HIM YOU ARE SO WRAPPED UP DOING THE SHOW, BUT HERE NOW 20 YEARS LATER, I HEAR HIM AND REALIZE WHAT A GREAT TALENT HE WAS. HE WAS THE REAL DEAL.
