That Houston show is my favorite one to watch as far as fan filmed footage, full of energy and pretty decent quality.

Love the Houston footage. I wish he had as much energy during 'Aloha' as he displayed in Houston 71.

Well this wasn't shot on 8 mm was it!?
The way the camera keeps focus while zooming in and out. Anyone know more about this footage from Houston?

Thanks for posting man!

It is not only Houston, but several concerts from November 1971.

Go to the Press Conference in June 9 1972... "Professional" filming from November 1971 (Boston to be specific) are asked about, but not answered by either Elvis or Tom Parker.

First of all, hi Oven! Love your site. Always have!!

So, you also think this is not 8 mm? It's also very detailed and very steady... seems very odd for 8 mm footage, especially from 1971?

A few thoughts:

The grade of film used does not exclusively mean professionally shot. That is, a professional photographer using 8mm could shoot film that looks very professional and an amatuer with a 16mm camera could make a complete mess of it in terms of composition, focusing, exposure etc. That being said, yes generally professional footage would be 16mm or 35mm.

Another interesting thought is that YES agree the Houston footage is excellent in terms of energy/excitement and lead me to another thought which is potentially a separate post in itself. I was listening to the On Stage Opening/Closing show FTD for the fist time today - absolutely excellent! It led me to thinking that much as I love TTWIS (Vegas Season 3) if I had to make a pact with the devil and the trade off was every negative was burned form Aug 70 and replaced with ones of Feb 70 I would have to close the deal and go for Feb 70 much as it would break my heart to see Aug 70 go up in smoke, This post has made me realise that in terms of if we could choose what we could have had professionally filmed I would have to go for Nov 1971 as opposed to April 1972 (AKA EOT). Again love EOT and don't want to see it go up in smoke but given the choice of one or 'tother' is would have to be Nov 1971. Maybe the compromise would be to keep all of the previous 4 and offer up Aloha and EIC as the sacrificial lambs (too harsh?)

This is incorrect. Film and audio show Elvis and his manager do answer the question.

WHat happened here is that when the media asked about "Boston" they were actually referring to the show covered by MGM almost exactly two months earlier, in Buffalo, New York on April 5. From their point of view, why did the movie company not wait and film at the more prestigious Madison Square Garden?

To allow, to what, dear?

Why did MGM film your concert earlier in Boston [sic], when they could have filmed it here?

I don't know, that's a good question. Why is that, Colonel (laughs)?

[Parker] I didn't hear that. What's the question?

She said, "Why did they film the concert in Boston, they could've filmed it here."

[Parker] To film it here, it could have been outlawed.

Here's the video for the above:

You are right. However a classic Parker answer...

This is a theory, and could of course be true. However, I believe that the reference to Boston actually was correct. Video from these November concerts indicate so, and so do Parkers answer, between the lines.

Its 8mm well filmed, the footage you see was a transfer to VHS so if a new transfer was made today in HD it would look a lot better still

The person filming is a pro - no doubt. You see how he frames Elvis and follows him in the pro way of the time. Anothe thing to notice is that The camera is steady - almost impossible by holdining in in one or 2 hands - mabe he was using the sholder as support.... And he must have been right in front. mayne a pro using a 8mm camera for a personal use

Speaking of Houston 1971, It's a single camera, shot by someone who knew what they were doing. I doubt it was an MGM employee. After all these years, would we not have some piece of evidence to indicate the studio's presence on that tour? And if they had been there, it means there was no reason for co-director Bob Abel to videotape the opening concert in Buffalo the following April in order to "study" the show. They would have already had footage to review. So, the film is from either a fan who was also a skilled amateur, or a professional who was allowed to stay near the front for the entire hour.

I prefer my theory. It's not a mystery, just common sense. See what I wrote above in reply to Rockin_John.

If I'm not mistaken, the Houston 71 film was shot by Sue Weigert, who was seen in "That's the Way It Is". Allegedly she had permission to film. She was a long time regular "gate-fan" in California in the late 60's, and saw Elvis many times in concert.

This is only what I've heard, I'm not claiming this to be fact.
