I wonder if takes 11-12 of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face are the duets? The info in "A Life in Music" differs from the info on Keith Flynn's site.

i do like the 4 'themes' for the release (Christmas/Gospel/Pop/Folk)and that would work well on the 4 cd set!
Yes, me too. I would especially like it if the Christmas songs are kept separate, because I can really only listen to them at Christmas time. You can call it superstition, but as kids our parents strictly ensured that we did only play Christmas songs between the first Advent and Epiphany. And somehow we keep that tradition... So no "Merry Christmas Baby" for me until November, 28th 2021
so take it as a 3-cd-set
and enjoy the bonus christmas disc designed especially for you -
but only between the first advent and epiphany, you hear me !?!?!? :smt018
I'll be a good boy and follow orders :smt083
better not.
from no kind of man.
you´re only made out of flesh, blood and bones.
if i´m gonna gonna start a rumble with you, i won´t try it all alone.

edit: looks like the 4-cd-set was recuced to a 2-cd-set for you (sans christmas/sacred recordings). :(

I'm very encouraged that these sessions are getting a mainstream release. After all the discussions around the poor sales of recent sets, it's great to see Sony continue to put 'new' Elvis projects into the mainstream market.

Whilst I understand the appeal of FTD's complete sessions sets, I find these mainstream sets far more entertaining to listen to, and look forward to hearing Matt Ross-Spang's work on these recordings.

I was hoping for a mainstream release of the 1971 sessions, as the secular masters have never had a coherent showcase, and this set ticks all the boxes for me.

So, I will look forward to compiling my own country / folk compilation from the new mixes, and hope that there is more to come via the mainstream market from Sony.

Great news!

i hope there will be some candid studio talk included in the outtakes.
listening to studio sessions, it´s only half the fun without it for me.
the more the better and uncensored please, no need for today´s "political correctness" when it comes to historical recordings.

Strange that Amazing Grace from the He Touched Me album is not in the Religious Sides part.

If the track listing above is correct, then I’ll be making my own playlist for the secular stuff and re-arranging the tracks and burn to my own CD and then creating separate discs for the Gospel and Xmas recordings and outtakes. And if the set is released mid to late November, then it’ll only be a few weeks before listening to the Xmas stuff around Xmas time.

That aside, and I’m sure someone is already working on it, but apart from these recordings getting remixed, how many of the outtakes do we as collectors already have on FTD releases.

Not sure why Amazing Grace is on CD1, but it may be they were short of running time on CD2. I would have moved A Thing Called Love to CD1 if that was the case.

Unless I missed something when cross-referencing the track listing with Keith Flynn's site, the following tracks are previously unreleased:

yes it sounds allright, but i am guessing the truly unheard material may well be 'very small indeed'(Are You Lonesome Tonight,He Touched Me Take 1;An Evening Prayer Take 1 - )i certainly am hoping for the Temple Riser and other duets(may 21st duet with Ginger Holliday) on 'The first time' as the 2nd duet is rather difficult to find and the first one i heard years ago from Bootleg(rough cut diamonds vol 1).Kieth Flyns site says takes 1-10 of 'The first time' are on a reel that is lost- hence why we only get takes 11 and 12 on this set.

remember the time, when rca made us buy new lps for one or two unreleased tracks?
they still do (did they ever stop?), only with expensive sets this time around, since we got more cheeze to spend, than as youngsters with spare pocket money.
ole colonel´s sales strategy is still working magic and at full throttle: always hold something back and leave `em wanting more - "keep buying them records". :smt005

If this is indeed the final track listing, I fear that that duets are still lost.. I am sure they would be indicated as a duet with.. or 'solo version' etc.. I realize that Sony can't release what they don't have, but it's a shame after 50 years and all the time spent going through the vaults that these have disappeared for what seems is forever. Maybe they were simply erased at 'someone's request. I agree that these duets would've been the icing on this set, but it is what it is.

Absolutely. My bad. I only looked at discs 3 and 4, assuming that discs 1 and 2 only contain the undubbed masters.

Amazing Grace & A Thing Called Love both have crossover appeal. Amazing Grace is a good fit with the folk recordings, but personally I prefer the bluesy alternative version which appears on disc three.

This was always going to be a difficult project to sequence due to the prominence of Christmas & gospel material.

Personally, I'd have been tempted to fashion an album out of the secular masters, rather than take the folk, piano, pop route but I can also see why Sony have done this.

If the strongest 12 secular tracks were sequenced as a 'lost' album, the remaining recordings would have sounded very much like leftovers. So, overall, I think Sony have taken the right approach here.

well clearly they didnt find the tapes for " we can make the morning" or " Im leaving "

As for " the first time ever i saw your face " DUETS - The would not be the " icing on the cake" - they are terrible and thats down to the girls, not Elvis, nor the song. - I imagine they DO exist - they certainly exist on acetate but i imagine Ernst agrees with me - once was enough for me!
i dont know why anyone wants those included, Theres a reason those duets have stayed under lock n key.

I love the nashville 70 set but i think ill be passing on this, i have all the FTDS and this is a fairly poor set-list, the world doesnt need "Padre" or " love me, love the life i lead" - they are the 70's versions of "ito eats" and "theres no room to rhumba" .

I do think he put down some nice tracks at these sessions, despite really not wanting to be there - They should have let him proceed with the folk album he clearly wanted to lay down:
The piano songs are three of the most sublime understated recordings he ever laid down in the 70s and shows what he could have done when he felt inspired and into it.
"until its time" is a beauty imo, and i dont think he ever matched it on stage.

Would have loved the complete " im leavin" takes to have been found .

The cover is fine, at least its not a live shot ala Parker. Im guessing there are zero photos from these sessions.

I still cant see this making much, if ANY profit and im sure this is more a safeguarding exercise to protect the copyright than it is about artistic legacy or cashflow.

Yes the takes 11 and 12 were recorded in march with Temple Riser and the re make on 21st May had Ginger Holliday doing a duet .The fact that NO re make from May 21st is even listed is not a good omen as we do not even know if the takes 11 and 12 we do get are edited 'solo' versions from Elvis....... seems i may still have to re visit my "Rough cut Diamonds Vol 1"......

Given how little of this material is previously unreleased, am I correct in assuming that recordings previously issued via FTD are still classed as 'unreleased' until they are issued in the mainstream market via Sony?

Otherwise, if the purpose of this release was just to protect the copyright, would Sony really go to the trouble of issuing a four CD set into the mainstream market, just to protect a few previously unissued impromptu & alternate takes?

If the tracks have been issued via FTD, then they are copyright protected. If issued after 2013, then they have 70 years protection.

So, this release was touted as having to be issued this year due to copyright protection, when effectively, if it hadn't been issued at all, Sony would have only lost the copyright on a few alternate recordings that have little or no commercial value in their own right.

That said, I'm delighted that it's happening.
