It's the other way around. According to Keith Flynn, the duet was recorded live with Ginger Holladay. Take 11 should therefore actually contain Ginger's voice. Keith only mentions that Elvis's and Ginger's voices were removed from take 12 (master), which was then processed further. No mention is made of vocals being removed from earlier takes. I agree, though, that Ginger's voice might have been removed by Matt Ross-Spang for this new release.YDKM wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 3:27 pmYes the takes 11 and 12 were recorded in march with Temple Riser and the re make on 21st May had Ginger Holliday doing a duet .The fact that NO re make from May 21st is even listed is not a good omen as we do not even know if the takes 11 and 12 we do get are edited 'solo' versions from Elvis....... seems i may still have to re visit my "Rough cut Diamonds Vol 1"......ORION wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 2:56 pmIf this is indeed the final track listing, I fear that that duets are still lost.. I am sure they would be indicated as a duet with.. or 'solo version' etc.. I realize that Sony can't release what they don't have, but it's a shame after 50 years and all the time spent going through the vaults that these have disappeared for what seems is forever. Maybe they were simply erased at 'someone's request. I agree that these duets would've been the icing on this set, but it is what it is.

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
when Elvis started these sessions...he wanted to do a folk album...similar to Elvis Country.
that first session was cut short because of his eye trouble and the folk album never came to be.
the first time ever, amazing grace, early morning rain and thats what you get were recorded that first session.
probably the beginnings of what would've been Elvis Folk.
my guess is thats why amazing grace is on the folk section and not the gospel.
not that any of you didn't know that already.
just made me feel better.

i really enjoy your posts.Z0S0 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 3:25 pmwell clearly they didnt find the tapes for " we can make the morning" or " Im leaving "
As for " the first time ever i saw your face " DUETS - The would not be the " icing on the cake" - they are terrible and thats down to the girls, not Elvis, nor the song. - I imagine they DO exist - they certainly exist on acetate but i imagine Ernst agrees with me - once was enough for me!
i dont know why anyone wants those included, Theres a reason those duets have stayed under lock n key.
I love the nashville 70 set but i think ill be passing on this, i have all the FTDS and this is a fairly poor set-list, the world doesnt need "Padre" or " love me, love the life i lead" - they are the 70's versions of "ito eats" and "theres no room to rhumba" .
I do think he put down some nice tracks at these sessions, despite really not wanting to be there - They should have let him proceed with the folk album he clearly wanted to lay down:
The piano songs are three of the most sublime understated recordings he ever laid down in the 70s and shows what he could have done when he felt inspired and into it.
"until its time" is a beauty imo, and i dont think he ever matched it on stage.
Would have loved the complete " im leavin" takes to have been found .
The cover is fine, at least its not a live shot ala Parker. Im guessing there are zero photos from these sessions.
I still cant see this making much, if ANY profit and im sure this is more a safeguarding exercise to protect the copyright than it is about artistic legacy or cashflow.
always informative.

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Take 11 - 12)
Isn't this new as well? We didn't get take 11 on the "Now" FTD. Just the master.
So not really new as such.

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
i wonder if the duets would've sounded better at a slower tempo?
i have always liked his version of the first time ever...both in studio and live.
i'm leavin is still the stand out from these sessions but i love his version of amazing grace as well.
the 3 piano solo's were magic...should've been used on Elvis Now...as is...along with the 3 singles, for lovin' me and don't think twice...but it is what it is.
until its time for you to go is one of his most under-rated singles from the 70s.
i like the live versions from msg and on tour...but the studio cut is my favorite.
love the mood and feel of that song.
same for his version of early morning rain...just beautiful.
he was/is a true artist and craftsman.
cared deeply about his work...always a perfectionist.
these sessions i think showcase that.
not afraid to try.
its a shame that folk album didn't get fleshed out.
im grateful for what he laid down.
these moments from '71 are special and demand to be heard.
glad they get the spot-light this time.

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
The recording is horrible and shouldn't be categorized anywhere... it should be shelved as Elvis wanted it to be... and especially shouldn't be part of a collection like Elvis Back In Nashville...

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
I respectfully and whole-heartedly disagree... it's a poor vocal performance by Elvis and the arrangement is a mess... I can understand including a recording like this for historical purposes on a collector label like FTD but not on a mainstream release. That's just my opinion of course...

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Take 11)

He Touched Me (Take 1)
and possibly ''Are You Lonesome Tonight'' are new, i'm also expecting some tracks will run longer and some new pieces of dialogue will be included.. but who knows

That horse left the barn a long time ago, when it was included on the '70's masters box set.

Hey, the set will cost around 35 euros. When I fill up a car in Germany, I get just 20 liters of super for 35 euros! What's expensive here now?

i always thought...speaking of what if's...that gladys knight would have been perfect for this.Greystoke wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 6:27 pmI think The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was misjudged in any regard, duets or the finished master, although I do appreciate that Elvis had an idea and was trying to do something unique to him with the song. And the same is true of what was intended as a folk-inspired project, although I don't think that this, as an album, had it materialised, would have deviated greatly from what actually was recorded in style, tone, and sound.eric c wrote: ↑Wed Aug 11, 2021 5:48 pmi wonder if the duets would've sounded better at a slower tempo?

For that to have really worked, Elvis probably needed input from some other sources, and a mind to collaborate in wider circles. Which isn't a slight on who he was working with, or where, because the best and worst of these sessions succeeds and fails on what Elvis did or didn't bring to the table. But sometimes that isn't enough. No matter who the artist.
What would have been far more interesting with regards to The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, however, is if Elvis reached out to find somebody who could actually collaborate with him on equal terms. Which, we know was something he rarely done, and for numerous reasons. Although that's another story. But the creative possibilities and hit potential of Elvis dueting with say Streisand or Minnelli, or Cher at that time, or Dolly Parton, would have been something to hear. Which is veering into “what if” territory, but Elvis had a song and an idea that he couldn't get to grips with. He clearly wanted to stretch himself creatively, but seemed to be at a loss.
my 2 favorite versions of help me make it through the night are Elvis' and her's.
i would love to have heard those 2 voices on the first time ever as a duet.
beautiful post by the way.
thank you.

Merry Christmas Baby (Unedited)
I wonder if this will truly be the unedited version or a splice like what was on the "Wonderful World of Christmas" FTD??

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
Hands down the best mix and version of "Amazing Grace" is on the Venus release "Unedited Masters".
That was quite a revelation to me!
Regarding "My Way"
I find it haunting and possible the "darkest" track he ever laid down. It's chilling and miles from the live versions.
I appreciate it.

I can't understand how they got Elvis to cut "Fools rush in" in 1971. It sounds like something from his mid-60's movies.

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
Pretty sure it was Elvis his own idea / at his own request considering he had Ricky Nelson's guitar player there aka.. James Burton and Elvis obviously liked the song as the entire track seems almost a 1 on 1 copy with Ricky's version.
