Hands down the best mix and version of "Amazing Grace" is on the Venus release "Unedited Masters".
That was quite a revelation to me!

Regarding "My Way"
I find it haunting and possible the "darkest" track he ever laid down. It's chilling and miles from the live versions.
I appreciate it.
i loved the dark mood intro.
he was onto something.
i prefer the live versions but the studio track is just so different...and dark.
i like it.

Elvis’s approach to My Way was certainly downbeat and sombre, with none of the triumphalism and swagger heard in Sinatra’s original recording. It doesn't have the same attitude, but he's reaching for something that is interesting and quite unique to some degree, in respect to this particular song. I do like where he was going with it. And the arrangement does have contemporary qualities to it. Not that this was an old song when it caught Elvis’s attention.
for me its that piano intro.
just so dark.
gives me chills when i hear it.
Elvis had night vision...musically speaking...because he was at home with these dark, moody wheepers, man.

Well, my Blue Hawaii guess went down the drain! I'll take this for what it is! Hopefully the mixes may bring something forward, audio wise! Another double up purchase of material already in the can!

There’s simply no way that Blue Hawaii would have been a new Sony mainstream release.

The icing on the cake for me is if on the final disc, they make a "hidden track" featuring Elvis's temper tantrum regarding the backing singers and storming out

My Way was and is a pop song. But I don't think Elvis’s attempt at the song in Nashville is horrible...

...However, I think this recording and recordings like it should be included in sets such as this...
I respectfully and whole-heartedly disagree... it's a poor vocal performance by Elvis and the arrangement is a mess... I can understand including a recording like this for historical purposes on a collector label like FTD but not on a mainstream release. That's just my opinion of course...

That horse left the barn a long time ago, when it was included on the '70's masters box set.
Really? I wasn't aware...thanks...

whilst this release is not until november(which makes it my xmas present time wise) i already know that i am not buying it for the 'unreleased content'.....anything 'extra' or 'new' , but MAINLY for the sound quality......again although i do agree both Temple Riser and Ginger Holliday's vocals added to 'The First Time do NOT quite match nicely , it would have been nice for completelness to have those performances....oh well for that back to my previous bootleg for that!

this box set makes me think about what should've been Elvis Now:
•help me make it through the night
•i'm leavin'
•it's only love
•the first time ever i saw your face
•until its time for you to go
•we can make the morning
•early mornin' rain
•thats what you get for lovin' me
•fools rush in
•don't think twice,its alright
•its still here
•i'll take you home again kathleen
•i will be true

13 tracks...i removed rosary,hey jude,hand in the hand,sylvia and 10,000yrs ago.

i put sylvia on the love letters album.

i add miracle of the rosary and put your hand in the hand on the wonderful world of christmas.

i don't know if this line up would've changed anything but i think its a better album.

i'm sure yall have done the same...love to hear your line-ups of what should've been.

true...but i love the he touched me album and didn't want to tamper with it.

i thought hand in the hand fit on the christmas album because....well...it is about Jesus.

honestly...there is apart of me that wanted to leave it on Now because its one of the original trax i like.

I was thinking the same thing. When we first got in 1995, it was interesting to me but not something I listened to much from that set. The alternate take of Amazing Grace was more fascinating to listen to then.

very excited.
open up those piano solos and the don't think twice jam and let'm breathe a bit.
i wonder if the duets on the first time ever are included.
i'm super excited to hear the gospel cuts.
the marathon is my favorite session...but i have always liked these '71 sessions as well.
the cover art is beautiful.

Did both of you avoid getting copies of these?

Elvis Now (FTD, 2010)
Elvis Fool (FTD, 2010)
He Touched Me (FTD, 2011)

nope.
got the vinyls too.

Then your comments about "opening up those piano solos" and letting things "breathe a bit" makes zero sense, as the audio quality on those eight discs is superb.

listening to studio sessions, it´s only half the fun without it for me.
the more the better and uncensored please, no need for today´s "political correctness" when it comes to historical recordings.

remember the time, when rca made us buy new lps for one or two unreleased tracks?
they still do (did they ever stop?), only with expensive sets this time around, since we got more cheeze to spend, than as youngsters with spare pocket money.
ole colonel´s sales strategy is still working magic and at full throttle: always hold something back and leave `em wanting more - "keep buying them records". :smt005

RCA never made us buy anything. It was a choice then, it is a choice now.

Given your derision, I guess you will be sitting this one out.

I don’t think his comment warranted a history lesson about the past. He merely enjoys hearing the recordings and accompanying studio chatter as it was captured on tape when it happened, not an edited version because a word or two “triggers” someone. I would like to hear it as it was laid down, as well. On the other hand, history is just that and should be left alone to teach a lesson instead of being erased or “candy coated,” as is with the current state of affairs. Ymmv

when Elvis started these sessions...he wanted to do a folk album...similar to Elvis Country.
that first session was cut short because of his eye trouble and the folk album never came to be.
the first time ever, amazing grace, early morning rain and thats what you get were recorded that first session.
probably the beginnings of what would've been Elvis Folk.
my guess is thats why amazing grace is on the folk section and not the gospel.

not that any of you didn't know that already.
just made me feel better.

The March 1971 session was different and distinct from the May 1971 visit. It was not a marathon, laundry-list affair by any means, and far less chaotic than what the evenings two months later turned out to be.

"Amazing Grace" is a hymn by birth, but appropriated by popular culture to such an extent it transcends that definition. Thus its place in the Presley box set track listing.
