i wonder if the duets would've sounded better at a slower tempo?

i have always liked his version of the first time ever...both in studio and live.

i'm leavin is still the stand out from these sessions but i love his version of amazing grace as well.

the 3 piano solo's were magic...should've been used on Elvis Now...as is...along with the 3 singles, for lovin' me and don't think twice...but it is what it is.

until its time for you to go is one of his most under-rated singles from the 70s.
i like the live versions from msg and on tour...but the studio cut is my favorite.
love the mood and feel of that song.
same for his version of early morning rain...just beautiful.

he was/is a true artist and craftsman.
cared deeply about his work...always a perfectionist.
these sessions i think showcase that.
not afraid to try.
its a shame that folk album didn't get fleshed out.
im grateful for what he laid down.
these moments from '71 are special and demand to be heard.
glad they get the spot-light this time.

There are some special moments, and some not-so-special moments.

The session may be seen this way:

1969 Memphis > 1970 Nashville > 1971 Nashville

I did a deep dive on one of the special ones here:

The recording is horrible and shouldn't be categorized anywhere... it should be shelved as Elvis wanted it to be... and especially shouldn't be part of a collection like Elvis Back In Nashville...

Elvis studio attempt of "My Way" is underwhelming, and its arrangement fails to hit the mark. And so it was left on the shelf.

The main reason it was dug out posthumously years ago, and now again for 2021, is because it is such a famous and successful popular song.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Way

Frank Sinatra's "signature" single from 1969 was a great success, and opened the gates to scores of covers. The song, in the punk recording by Sid Vicious, even closes out one of the greatest films of the 20th century, "Goodfellas."

And so it goes.

when Elvis started these sessions...he wanted to do a folk album...similar to Elvis Country.
that first session was cut short because of his eye trouble and the folk album never came to be.
the first time ever, amazing grace, early morning rain and thats what you get were recorded that first session.
probably the beginnings of what would've been Elvis Folk.
my guess is thats why amazing grace is on the folk section and not the gospel.

not that any of you didn't know that already.
just made me feel better.

The March 1971 session was different and distinct from the May 1971 visit. It was not a marathon, laundry-list affair by any means, and far less chaotic than what the evenings two months later turned out to be.

"Amazing Grace" is a hymn by birth, but appropriated by popular culture to such an extent it transcends that definition. Thus its place in the Presley box set track listing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Grace#In_American_popular_culture
thank you.

this box set makes me think about what should've been Elvis Now:
•help me make it through the night
•i'm leavin'
•it's only love
•the first time ever i saw your face
•until its time for you to go
•we can make the morning
•early mornin' rain
•thats what you get for lovin' me
•fools rush in
•don't think twice,its alright
•its still here
•i'll take you home again kathleen
•i will be true

13 tracks...i removed rosary,hey jude,hand in the hand,sylvia and 10,000yrs ago.

i put sylvia on the love letters album.

i add miracle of the rosary and put your hand in the hand on the wonderful world of christmas.

i don't know if this line up would've changed anything but i think its a better album.

i'm sure yall have done the same...love to hear your line-ups of what should've been.
There’s no way RCA would have out out a 13 track album. And you have effectively cancelled the Fool album by removing 50% of the tracks from it.

then remove fools rush in and you still have an excellent 12 track album.

and they kinda did release a 13 track album in elvis country with 10,000yrs ago played between the 12 tracks.

most of the songs on these sessions are depressing. The Nashville sessions in 1970 were a lot more fun. I might sit this one out.

Once again, RCA would not release a 13 track album without getting hit with additional costs. And you’ve cut into a couple of Camden albums too which were far more successful than Elvis’ regular studio albums. We know in hindsight what would have made better albums, although I have never been convinced that a studio album mixed with "live" tracks works very well, but the "live" songs you now want to add on to the Fool album would not have been a consideration for RCA as those songs had already been on either MSG and Aloha or both.

Bottom line here is that as much as you want to re-hash Elvis albums to make them appear better, had Elvis knuckled down and recorded more and better songs in the studio during this time, we would have had better albums instead of the hotch potch releases we got via Now and Fool.

i hope there will be some candid studio talk included in the outtakes.
listening to studio sessions, it´s only half the fun without it for me.
the more the better and uncensored please, no need for today´s "political correctness" when it comes to historical recordings.

A more nuanced understanding of what kind of language may be hurtful or offensive is a sign human beings are trying to become more decent.

Kind of like how the U.S. used to mandate separate water fountains and hotels and restaurants for people with dark skin.

Good people learn from their mistakes or, as you put it, by becoming more "politically correct."
I don’t think his comment warranted a history lesson about the past. He merely enjoys hearing the recordings and accompanying studio chatter as it was captured on tape when it happened, not an edited version because a word or two “triggers” someone. I would like to hear it as it was laid down, as well.
i couldn´t have said it better, swamp fox.
when it comes to elvis´ candid chat, it´s usually not about the "n-word", but profane swearing of all kind, which should be left untouched in my view. no need to protect his image in 2021. on the other hand, assessing it from a pure sales perspective aimed at the general market, i can comprehend why sony did/does censoring. i wish they wouldn´t, but on the ftd label they surely shouldn´t (which is not aimed at the general music buyer, as we all know).

On the other hand, history is just that and should be left alone to teach a lesson instead of being erased or “candy coated,” as is with the current state of affairs. Ymmv
when it comes to the broader social context (apart from elvis), i´m undecided.
i think one has to examine each and every case individually and precisely, before a decision is made.
i´m no fan to change older books, because, for example, the "n-word" was used (only because we don´t use it anymore). trying to change history that way feels wrong to me.
i feel different when it comes to changing street names or removing monuments, because an historical character is seen in another light today. in germany we have some talk about this, often referring to streets or places, which were named after persons, who helped or enabled hitler or played a shady part in the nazi regime. of course, i´m all for it to remove those honors.

all this is a very complex issue, so i´ll leave it at that.
also learned something new today, which is the acronym "ymmv" (just looked it up).

remember the time, when rca made us buy new lps for one or two unreleased tracks?

RCA never made us buy anything. It was a choice then, it is a choice now.

Given your derision, I guess you will be sitting this one out.
i haven´t decided yet. i´m very picky these days.
since i don´t own all ftds, i will probably give it a go, since the price looks decent. if the masters are undubbed, it will be a added buying inducement for me.
will you buy it?

With sound quality being my main point of interest on this box set, this preview is encouraging.

It shines bright so if the audio has the same consistency as the FEIN set, we’re in a good spot here!

Damn, it sounds good!
I add the mp3 for those who do not have Spotify.

Really good. Does anyone else agree that Elvis lost some of the qualities that was present in that first take as the takes progressed?
And that is often the case in the 70's. I find he is often more focused on the lyrics in the earlier takes, and even singing more beautiful (although the overall performance is falling apart of course)?

look foward to November the 12th then. Take 1 and brief rehearsal of 'I'm Leaving' is a lovely clear sound and very nice...if the entire set sounds like this , then it will be 'Good'.

One could make a pretty good album if they took all of those Nashville '71 tracks, sorted them out and picked ten or twelve songs. I've seen some of the fantasy lists here before. As mentioned, there were good songs recorded during these sessions, along with some that would be omitted if I were to make up such an album. That said, these sessions were nothing to sneeze at. I like 90% of what was recorded.

But I'm just that way.

Depending on the quality of Matt Ross-Spang's mix, we should be able to craft a more sonically pleasing album master of He Touched Me in the near future.

The majority of the tracks are devoid of overdubs, and those that aren't, it should be possible to create new constructions using isolated elements of the vintage mixes.

A first glance at the tracklisting and unreleased material with the help of Keith Flynn's wonderful site - UPDATE:

- Help Me Make It Through The Night - Take 11: unreleased
- Amazing Grace - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- Padre - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- A Thing Called - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- I'm Leavin' - Take 1: rehearsal before take 1 is new/unreleased
- I'm Leavin' - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- We Can Make The Morning - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- It's Only Love - Unedited Undubbed Master: unreleased
- Love Me, Love The Life I Lead - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- Are You Lonesome Tonight? - Fragment
- Put Your Hand In The Hand - Rehearsal: unreleased
- He Touched Me - Take 1: unreleased
- An Evening Prayer - Take 1: unreleased
- I'll Be Home On Christmas Day - Remake - Take 10: unreleased (so far only take 1 through 9 were known to exist)

PLUS: many of the undubbed masters of the christmas songs were only released on bootleg from acetate, as well as some of the gospel and regular songs. We'll get to hear those for the first time in the best possible sound quality!

As with the 1970 Nashville Boxset I am sure there will be loads more new things for us to hear:

- More complete rehearsals and/or fragments before certain takes
- More unreleased studio chat
- Longer running alternate takes and undubbed masters (no fades at the end)

And: we will know that the sound and mixing by Matt Ross-Spang will again be fantastic, without a doubt!

Looks like another winner!

Elvis: "My favorite song is called Padre. Are you familiar with it by Toni Arden?"

The version by Toni is... well....the fraise "over the top" comes to mind.

Source: “The complete ‘50 Masters”. Also in “ Elvis” What he said, exactly how he said It.... Word for word” by Jerry Osborne.

The version by Toni is... well....the fraise "over the top" comes to mind.

I'm well aware of Toni Arden's top twenty hit from nearly 63 years ago, and Elvis' press conference comment. But you fail to include the entire answer, why is that?

Perhaps because Presley names two songs that are favorites, at the time:

My favorite song is a song called “Padre.” Are you familiar with it, by Toni Arden?

And also, “You'll Never Walk Alone” was always one of my very favorites.

There are many covers that followed Arden's hit single, and Elvis' recording doesn't make the top five.

It's bad.

On Spotify you can listen to a complete Take 1 of 'I'm Leaving'.

Yep, I agree: many times, the first cut was the deepest.
