When you listen to his concerts he will promote his latest singles I've Lost You, In The Ghetto, I'm Leavin and others but he does not for most part promote the albums. Did he even know the names of most of them? Elvis was more of a singles guy.
Elvis for the most part did not promote his new single A-sides. At best he would perhaps offer a handful of perfunctory performances, then it would disappear from the set list. In examples above, "In The Ghetto" was not his current release when he sang it on stage at the International in July-August 1969. That was "Clean Up Your Own Backyard," issued to radio and retail in June, it was never a part of the program at all. So much for being a "singles guy."
I went quickly through Elvis' singles, and found the following were all included in the immediately following Vegas season and/or tour(s) after their release (and in one case before its release):
In The Ghetto
Clean Up Your Own Backyard (was a movie song he was never going to do in person as with the gospel / Christmas singles)
Suspicious MInds
Don't Cry Daddy
Kentucky Rain
The Wonder Of You (sung often, but little in 1970)
I've Lost You
You Don't Have To Say You Love Me
I Really Don't Want To Know (not till June 1977)
Where Did They Go, Lord? (not done)
Life (thankfully not done)
I'm Leavin'
It's Only Love (strange he didn't, but he didn't)
Until It's Time For You To Go
An American Trilogy
Burning Love
Separate Ways (no, but highlighted in his fall film)
Steamroller Blues
Raised On Rock (done only once, not a good song for Elvis)
I've Got A Thing About You Baby (a missed, happy song and opportunity)
Help Me (heavily promoted)
It's Midnight (Elvis' preference to the supposed A side, Promised Land -- but still done often)
My Boy (before and after release)
T-R-O-U-B-L-E (for THREE tours -- I enjoyed seeing it performed 19 times)
Bringing It Back (as background just once in Vegas)
Hurt (just about every show after its release)
And now we get to the point where Elvis was just too lazy:
Moody Blue (sung once)
Way Down (never)
About 16 of Elvis' 24 singles in the '70s were performed heavily, two likely never to be done (gospel / Christmas), and several should never have been singles. Doing a favour for someone?
I think he promoted many, many of his singles -- at almost every opportunity he had after the releases noted above.

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
another brilliant track from these sessions.
from the equally brilliant he touched me album.
Elvis had a deep love for gospel music.
and it never failed to bring out his very best.
the brillance of his gospel performances to me is simply how sincere they are.
they were front and center of his musical soul.
along with the blues music he loved.

13 tracks...i removed rosary,hey jude,hand in the hand,sylvia and 10,000yrs ago.
i put sylvia on the love letters album.
i add miracle of the rosary and put your hand in the hand on the wonderful world of christmas.
i don't know if this line up would've changed anything but i think its a better album.
i'm sure yall have done the same...love to hear your line-ups of what should've been.
That's not a bad track list, but I don't think it's always necessary to find a place for every song from the sessions. This was the problem with a lot of Elvis' albums. RCA released everything, and inevitably the overall quality suffered.
Some of the lesser tracks could have been held over for single 'B' sides or even budget albums - as was the case with the leftovers from the 1969 Memphis sessions.
Given that the above tracklist includes a number of contemporary covers, I would also have been tempted to include the live master of Something on the Now album too.
The original track list has always baffled me though. Elvis certainly cut enough good secular material during the 1971 Nashville sessions for a decent, coherent album release. So why RCA felt the need to fill out the Now album with the likes of Hey Jude, Sylvia, and I Was Born About 10,000 Years Ago is beyond me.
A 12 track compilation from the secular 1971 recordings would have resulted in a much better album. I'll certainly be sequencing my own compilation when the new mixes arrive in November.

Agreed, I like a nice alternative album, I've been listening where possible to Take 1 versions of albums, No I put together undubbed ones.Axeman wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 11:44 pmWhen I listen to the undubbed masters, I don't miss anything at all, but rather I hear things in the instrumentation and vocals that were previously buried by the overdubs. I enjoy hearing how it sounded when Elvis was in the studio making the music.Buddy wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 4:47 pmGood sound, but if you listen since about 45 years to his (overdubbed) masters as released on the records, you automatically "miss something" while listening to his undubbed outtakes. You really "hear" or at least recognize that Elvis AND the band left space during the recording for the overdubs, so the outtakes sound naked, not ready at all to release....

Some of those tracks are certainly great recordings, but "they have all stood tall….all these years later". In whose minds and memories? Suspicious Minds and In The Ghetto and perhaps a few others from the early 70s such as Burning Love and Always on My Mind have stood tall all these years later, but those on your list mean virtually nothing to those outside of the fanbase. Worldwide streams on Spotify for the He Touched Me album has equivalent album sales of 15k, Elvis Now has 10k, whilst the Fool album is around 4K. Compare that to From Elvis in Memphis which has 107k and In The Ghetto is responsible for 90k of that number.

You can use only 10 or 11 tracks and make a stronger tracklist that way.
Unfortunately, in the case of the 1971 nashville sessions, there were not enough good recordings for a strong secular LP.

Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
After this set all that’s left from studio work in the 70’s are the March 1972 and March 1975 sessions at Studio C in Los Angeles.
Neither session has enough to fill a 4cd set. The two sessions total 17 masters and the “Tiger Man” jam.
Will the two sessions be combined into one 4cd set? Could be called “L.A. Country”, or not.

That makes the interest levels in the album even worse then Mind you the album when it was originally released had poor sales of just under 300k and was regarded as a flop by RCA and a disappointment by fans.chop983 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 10:04 amTo be fair, that's probably, mostly, just me.emjel wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 1:02 am

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
I have never seen any evidence to back that statement up. It isn’t mentioned in Jorgensen’s sessions book, nor in any FTD narratives regarding the album and it doesn’t appear to get a mention in Peter Guralnick‘s book that covers those recordings. Yes, you can certainly hear the commitments on the recordings for them His Hand in Mine album, but there is no indication that I know of that it was recorded as a tribute to his mother.eric c wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 4:06 ami love that album as well.elvis-fan wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 3:36 amThe only reason the LP How Great Thou Art would rank anywhere near his top 10 best albums would be because of the song that was recorded 6 years before its release... although I do enjoy Elvis' performance of Stand By Me, but other than that I find that album pretty boring and flat when compared to a gem like His Hand In Mine. How He Touched Me and How Great Thou Art received Grammy Awards and His Hand In Mine didn't is mind boggling...
his voice never sounded better...upto that point.
recorded as a tribute to his mom,you can hear his committment on every tune.
great album.

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
It proves that not only Elvis thought anything with my voice is OK to put out. RCA did the same, this in the wake of the successful Aloha show
Talk about missed opportunity.
The follow up to Aloha should have been something like "Elvis at Abbey Road"

Also, if they hadn't issued almost everything they had left over from the 1970 Nashville sessions on the Love Letters album during the previous year, they could have used two or three of the stronger performances to compliment the 1971 material.
As much as I enjoy the He Touched album, it's unfortunate that once Elvis was committed to recoding Christmas and gospel albums, the focus on the folk album, which certainly had potential, was all but lost.

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
Yes I know and thats my point, his mindset never moved on from the 50's -
he should have been sat down by people that did, you only have to look at The Beatles legacy and how they are revered and held in such high regard whilst elvis is the fat drugged up guy in the jumpsuit mumbling My Way !
"from Elvis in memphis" should be held in the same regard as " Abbey Road " and i mean that 100% as a huge fan of both bands and both albums - but its not and its simply because of all the crap that came before and all crap that came after
Led zeppelin are Rock royalty, a part of that is their superb musicianship, some of it is the MYTH (drugs and groupies etc etc) but a HUGE part of it, the only part that matters in 2021 is down to the actual catalogue - and that is as solid as concrete and the main reason - aside from superb material - is that they really cared -
jimmy page DEMANDED (from atlantic records) 100% artistic & creative control over every single aspect of their records (this was unprecedented at that time) down to lyrics and even their band name being on the cover -
which it wasnt on the 4th album - current sales = 23 times platinum a 37 million sales!
jimmy page knew all this in 1968 - theres no reason Elvis shouldnt have, he just didnt care enough !
" Never was so Influential a Man so poorly prepared for his fate - nor so ineptly schooled for its Consequences"

THIS is the way ELVIS should be remembered! This is true greatness in the churchillian sense:
swaggering, daring, Proud yet humble, beaten yet never truly down,
MAGNIFICENT when victorious and always unforgettable! "

Re: Elvis Back In Nashville (4 cd Box Set)
two of my favorite lead-off tracks from any Elvis album came from these sessions in '71.
from elvis now...i love his voice on this'n here.
those kris kristofferson penned tunes never seemed to fail capturing his focus.
the other is the lead off track from his grammy winning gospel lp...the 3rd of his career.
its his vocals and the feel he captures on this one that wins the day.
there is just a depth and emotion and feel captured in his gospel recordings that captures attention....all these decades later.
