another excellent track off the brilliant he touched me album.
he was a perfectionist.
a true artist and craftsman.
and nobody knew their way around a gospel tune better.

the nov release of this '71 box set can't get here fast enough.

It's probably time to share a little context.

"A Thing Called Love" is an explicit cover of the 1968 arrangement recorded and released by the Imperials on the LP below. In fact, nearly half of He Touched Me finds Elvis usurping the sound and style of the Imperials work.

On the same 1968 album is their version of "Reach Out To Jesus," while "He Touched Me" and "I've Got Confidence" appear on the 1969 LP below. Elvis taped all four of them, using the same arrangements and their vocal backing, at the 1971 sessions.

He loved the sound of the Imperials. Their 1969 arrangement of "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" from their Love Is The Thing! LP was mirrored by the Stamps Quartet in the 1972 documentary, "Elvis On Tour."

A close look at the Imperials albums on the Impact label in the late 1960s yield at least a half-dozen 1970s Elvis gospel numbers:

The Impossible Dream
Reach Out To Jesus
A Thing Called Love
Must Jesus Bear The Cross Alone / Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus / Nearer My God To Thee
He Touched Me
I've Got Confidence
Sweet, Sweet Spirit

So the true artist and craftsman did a lot of listening to his Imperials albums.

There are a few exceptions on the 1972 release. Hearing the singer address "I, John" and "Bosom of Abraham" was a refreshing break.

Elvis' "jubilee" gospel recordings have always ranked with his finest religious work and on these two he was taking his cue from a 1961 LP by the Jubilee Four.

They were kind of a latter-day Golden Gate Quartet, and in fact member William Johnson had been in that legendary group. A couple of years later they appeared with Elvis in MGM's "Viva Las Vegas," and Presley even sang with them on the soundtrack.

Small world.

That's not a bad track list, but I don't think it's always necessary to find a place for every song from the sessions. This was the problem with a lot of Elvis' albums. RCA released everything, and inevitably the overall quality suffered.
I agree.
You can use only 10 or 11 tracks and make a stronger tracklist that way.
Unfortunately, in the case of the 1971 nashville sessions, there were not enough good recordings for a strong secular LP.
IMHO
Maybe not but a coherent one could have developed instead of Love Letters or Now. George’s “Exodus” album comes to mind. That’s the Lp that could have been the follow up after Elvis Country. Furthermore, the shelved single release Got My Mojo Workin’ would have been a great hit to promote and accompany the anticipated folk album in 71.
Got to agree that anything else than LLFE and NOW would have been more interesting, for sure.
EXODUS is a nice what-if but I still think that the material was not that interesting. "It's Only Love" and "Until It's Time For You To Go" are two sad examples. As you say, the inclusion of "Got My Mojo Workin' / Hands Off" (a proper edition of it at least) could have helped a little bit.

Great additional info as usual.

So could you say he was almost making a tribute album to The Imperials work. Or maybe it was another one to his mother 😉.

I would have preferred the more traditional gospel sound as on His Hand In Mine rather than the Contemporary Gospel sound used here. Personally as much as I like the He Touched Me album, for me, it is the weakest of the three that Elvis did record and doesn’t come close to the first one on which he so effortlessly excels.

I just watched the un boxing and Matt Ross came across very well but seemed nervous under the interviewer! The art work etc looked very nice.....and now we wait for 3 months!
It was an interesting broadcast although I found it a little underwhelming….I thought they may have played extracts from some of the recordings for the audience to hear. And I wonder if the 3 month wait for a November release has anything to do with the inclusion of Xmas songs. If I were a casual non fan buyer, I’m not sure I would want to buy something in September that has Xmas recordings on it. But I guess we will never know. I wish Sony would arrange another outlet in Europe for those coloured vinyl releases than just Graceland. Their shipping charges cost double the value of the album.

I enjoy It's Only Love & Until It's Time For You To Go very much . And there's good outtakes of both on the forthcoming set .

I only recently found out 'It's Only' was a B.J.Thomas cover. An artist Elvis greatly admired.

And 'Until It's Time ' written by the great Canadian artist Buffy Saint Marie is one of the most beautiful ballads recorded by Elvis , so much so he included it in his live sets in 1972.

The outtakes showcase great musicianship -- a compelling listen for me from the Elvis NOW FTD - I'm sure more audio naunces maybe revealed on the new BACK IN NASHVILLE release ...

A first glance at the tracklisting and unreleased material with the help of Keith Flynn's wonderful site - UPDATE:

- Help Me Make It Through The Night - Take 11: unreleased
- Amazing Grace - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- Padre - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- A Thing Called - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- I'm Leavin' - Take 1: rehearsal before take 1 is new/unreleased
- I'm Leavin' - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- We Can Make The Morning - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- It's Only Love - Unedited Undubbed Master: unreleased
- Love Me, Love The Life I Lead - Undubbed Master: unreleased
- Are You Lonesome Tonight? - Fragment
- Put Your Hand In The Hand - Rehearsal: unreleased
- He Touched Me - Take 1: unreleased
- An Evening Prayer - Take 1: unreleased
- I'll Be Home On Christmas Day - Remake - Take 10: unreleased (so far only take 1 through 9 were known to exist)

PLUS: many of the undubbed masters of the christmas songs were only released on bootleg from acetate, as well as some of the gospel and regular songs. We'll get to hear those for the first time in the best possible sound quality!

As with the 1970 Nashville Boxset I am sure there will be loads more new things for us to hear:

- More complete rehearsals and/or fragments before certain takes
- More unreleased studio chat
- Longer running alternate takes and undubbed masters (no fades at the end)

And: we will know that the sound and mixing by Matt Ross-Spang will again be fantastic, without a doubt!

Looks like another winner!

among the many recordings Elvis made at these nashville sessions in '71....2 special jams....recorded from the sessions in may of '71...really capture the magic that could be produced by guys who could make great music...just for the love of it.
backed by a great studio band,Elvis was at his best....when he could cut loose.

one of the best blues recordings he ever made.
as much as he loved gospel...he clearly had a deep love affair with the blues.
the best track from the wonderful world of christmas lp.
one of the best tracks from these '71 sessions.
a true essential.
its not just a folk album i wish he had done...
but with this group....i still lament that it wasn't a blues album they were throwing together.

the next night....magic is captured again.
this time....from the folk genre that was still clearly on his mind.
they all were just sittin' on ready.

shoulda been on the Now lp.
just a brilliant moment...thankfully captured for us to still enjoy...all these years later.

a snap-shot captured in real time of a brilliant artist.

november...come quickly.

Where have you been all these years…uploading all of these songs for us to listen to in the last week. At first, I thought you had been granted advance copies of some of the tracks on the forthcoming release   You do realise that we as fans and collectors, do actually have the music on a variety of releases that have appeared over the years….some of us even have the original albums when they were first released on vinyl, all those years ago.  I thought I’d mention it to save you a bit of leg work in trying to track the songs down.

just a brilliant moment...thankfully captured for us to still enjoy...all these years later.

a snap-shot captured in real time of a brilliant artist.

november...come quickly.
Where have you been all these years…uploading all of these songs for us to listen to in the last week. At first, I thought you had been granted advance copies of some of the tracks on the forthcoming release Image  You do realise that we as fans and collectors, do actually have the music on a variety of releases that have appeared over the years….some of us even have the original albums when they were first released on vinyl, all those years ago. Image
And it was great . Thanks Eric ...

Love that one . James Burton's guitar is great on last third of the song too ...

That sounds interesting ...

Yes I remember that post. What a fine 45 single it would have been too, since the studio singles weren’t doing so well. I wished that there were more of those not-so-polished jam recordings. It is those types of cuts that suits a folk album well.

I recently transferred all the masters from Nashville 1971 from my original USA albums.

Perhaps because they were the original analog recordings and mixes which we assume Elvis signed off on. And what is wrong with that?
