For someone of Elvis Presley's stature to be wasting his time and talent in 1971-1972 on a song by Jay Ramsey says it all about what happened to his career after 1970.

It's on the level of a pedestrian Partridge Family album track.

its better than that.
we're not talkin ito eats level here.
its a good....not great...but good track.

Nah.

This 1971 single charted higher (Cash Box "Top 100" #1, April 3, 1971, Billboard "Hot 100" #6, March 27, 1971) than any single side released by Elvis that year.

thats why its under-rated.
love his vocals on it.
always one of my favorite tracks from the Now lp.

november...come quickly.

I think you need to read my post again.

It's not "under-rated." It doesn't rate. It's third-rate.

Elvis' vocal isn't lovable. It's scattered and uninvolving.
Thats just your negative personal opinion - and to proof that you are right (a page earlier) while saying it didn't chart well etc. - tells nothing.
Guitar Man or Big Boss Man and many others also were no hits but great.

We Can Make The Morning is IMO a very fine song. It was just a B side and as almost all Elvis 70s singles the flip sides were no chart toppers anymore as in the 50s/60s when RCA released double A side singles.

Elvis' "Until It's Time for You to Go" (a song first released in 1965) peaked at #40 on the US Hot 100, and #9 on the US Easy Listening chart just two years after Neil Diamonds (1970) single which went just to #11 on the US Easy Listening chart and #53 on the US Hot 100.
So for a song which was released at least three times before Elvis, our man was most successful with it in the US. In the UK It was a UK Top 20 hit for British group The Four Pennies in 1965 but the King had a number 5 hit with it in the UK.
Conclusion: A many times covered song, most successful by Elvis.
Nothing wrong with that single at all.

and one of his more underrated tracks from the 70s.
perfect listen for a saturday night.

there was some special moments in nashville in '71.

Not quite sure how "We Can Make The Morning" can be considered "underrated." This B-side never charted, and no one today connects this song to anything important regarding Elvis Presley.

Otherwise, it's a terrible piece of material, and Elvis' all-over-the-place vocal should have told Felton Jarvis and RCA to keep it on the shelf. Instead, RCA released it as a 1972 B-side, and then as an LP track. That worked out well.

That "We Can Make The Morning" was taped just two years after the American Sound sessions tells us a lot about why the 1970s were so difficult for our favorite singer.

In the grand scheme of things, it cannot really be underrated if people are not that aware of it. The song means nothing to the majority of people outside of the fanbase because they don’t know it exists so they cannot rate it - it certainly does not stand out in the history of Elvis recordings as a reference recording - we aren’t talking Don’t Be Cruel or In The Ghetto versions 2 here. As for fans rating it….the jury is probably still out and dependant on the mood of the day. That said, you seem to be an obsessive in overrating things which isn’t good for your state of mind…..214 posts in 7 days reveals all - no wonder you are often in the dog house 😉. And I pity the poor dog.
I'm going to with emjel on this one as I don't quite understand why you (eric) keep posting commonly known link after youtube link of all the upcoming Nashville set songs in this thread. At first I thought they were more previews, but it turns out that they are just the familiar known recordings. That you are passionate about the songs is fine and dandy and by all means feel free to start a thread and flood it with these links. However this topic already 14 pages long and I can only imagine where we'll be if you post every single song from the upcoming set with the links provided. Just a thought to consider.
Thanks Ryan73 - Yes that’s exactly what I thought too. The thread is about the new forthcoming set so whenever I get a notification, I think some new relevant info has been discovered and uploaded. Others probably think along those lines too.

What's worse posting the link, or continuously quoting the post.

You've lost the plot if you "disagree" with chart data from the period. Those are facts.

As for your recent run of championing the lesser parts of the Presley oeuvre, all it proves is some people enjoy mediocrity.

Sadly, I'm not one of them.

I don’t particularly like Elvis’ cut if We Can Make The Morning. I don’t know what it is but it doesn’t come off right for me.

We Can Make The Morning is a personal favourite, but I do think Elvis' performance is far from perfect, his voice is shaky in parts and overblown in others, not much middle ground really, but that doesn't bother me too much. the main thing I don't like about the recording is the backing vocals, I think they are way too loud, hopefully we'll get a version sans backing vocals on this set.

a favorite from the '71 sessions in march

i have always loved Elvis' vocals on this folk tune
as always,james burton is flawless.
would've fit nicely on the now album...situated nicely behind early mornin' rain.
had this session not ended so soon...Elvis Folk woulda been a great album.

can not wait to see how this sounds on the new box set...back in nashville.

I've always had a soft spot for "We can make the morning" since i first heard it in 1972 on the b side of "until it's time for you to go" but i think it needed a few more takes to get it right.Same as " It's only love".Both these seem a little forced with something missing.I do enjoy them both even though they could have been better.I am looking forward to this box set and i won't be too disappointed because i know the sessions were difficult and the songs and vocals were not at the same level as 1970.

I was looking at the track listings for this release…..I’m sorry but Elvis in 1971 is a shadow of the man from 1969 and 1970. A poor Christmas album, weakest of his gospel offerings and a half hearted attempt at a folk album. He bounces back in 1972 but, really, are we that excited about this year. I am an Elvis fan but I have to be honest…..Jmho

The producers are making the best of a very mixed group of recordings.

Some are great, many are okay, more than a few are substandard.

As I posted before, it's a long walk from American Sound in 1969 to Nashville in 1971.

1969 Memphis > 1970 Nashville > 1971 Nashville
