I think that RPO cow has been milked dry. I would actually enjoy a really well done duet though, since there is only one really good out there.

I could see an acoustic album be done as well.

Would that include "Tiger Man" ?

How about Sony look at the later rock and rhythm and blues recordings, strip the overdubs, and give them fresh new mixes featuring just Elvis and the studio band, or the TCB band only from the live recordings.

That would be a great listen!

CD 1 is a strange presentation of the masters – but it isn’t even that. We have several false starts, a take that’s not the master, a remake and longer fades.

THE FIRST TIME EVER I SAW YOUR FACE has a false start, followed by the master take. It’s a heavy handed recording compared to the original, and sorely misses the critical third verse that Elvis would heartfully perform in person years later, notably at Birmingham, Alabama on December 29, 1976. It’s interesting to note that at the November 9, 1971 show in Baltimore, Elvis performs this song exactly as the single.

EDIT - AMAZING GRACE, the master from HE TOUCHED ME, is on Disc 1 where I can hear more words sung by Elvis like Take 2.

EARLY MORNIN’ RAIN is one line longer, while (THAT’S WHAT YOU GET) FOR LOVIN’ ME is a line and a half longer.

DON’T THINK TWICE, IT’S ALL RIGHT is supposedly the unedited master, as first heard officially on the double CD FTD release of ELVIS FOOL – however, BMG doesn’t really know what unedited means. NOTE: There was a CD bootleg release titled “Don’t Think Twice” on the Madison label featuring a January 1973 Las Vegas show with this song as a bonus track. It was promoted as a longer version (several minutes longer than BMG’s release). However, it was obvious on even the first listening that the track was looped, and the bootleggers either didn’t care, couldn’t tell, or purposefully promoted it as something it wasn’t.

The next track, IT’S STILL HERE, is noted as unedited which I assumed it was on the ‘70s box set, WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES, as it was labelled as such. But that unedited track WAS edited – either BMG didn’t know or lied to us.

We had the unedited version ‘again’ of IT’S STILL HERE on the extended FTD double-CD release of ELVIS FOOL, and I never checked. I always assumed that the three piano recordings were spontaneous, one-off efforts, which might have been a little more interesting (if they weren’t dull), but in fact, Elvis spent effort on these with multiple takes. That was surprising – and perhaps again misleading by BMG back in the day of their release.

FOOLS RUSH IN (WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD) features a longer fade, with an additional one and a half lines. MY WAY features another false start on this disc of masters??

The next three songs all feature longer fades -- IT’S ONLY LOVE (one extra, “… it’s only love …”), WE CAN MAKE THE MORNING (one extra line) and several more lines of LOVE ME, LOVE THE LIFE I LEAD. I really like the musical intro of this song, but this is one of my least favourite tracks on this disc. Awkward, strange, weird – I’m not sure how to describe this song. (The opening does make me think of a Tom Jones song, but I can’t place it.)

...AND during the false start you can hear Ginger Holliday followed by the master were she is deleted now.
Nobody ever will know who and why these "Frankenstein-remixes" were made the way it is done now.

The stripped back, "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" is beautiful and doesn't suffer for lack of backing vocals. I'll have to get this set, there you have it, I just listened to my first festive track.

Has anyone else got a glitch at 0.56 on MOTR, on the line "long enough...", Disc 4? It may be an original tape click or something but does sound more like a digital glitch to me... perhaps just my copy.

That aside I love the set thus far... though i won't be playing the Christmas stuff until December!

I think these projects and this endeavor has had its day with regards to Elvis. And I would guess that they far exceeded expectations, especially If I Can Dream. Conversely, I don't think the O Come, All Ye Faithful duet with Susan Boyle was anywhere near as successful as was hoped, and this was released around eight years ago now. It was the last Elvis single to appear on the U.K. charts and it seems unlikely that another single will make an appearance. The same applies to Susan Boyle.

Still, Elvis fans are divisive. Elvis couldn't please everyone in life and his record label isn't going to please everyone posthumously. Some releases and projects find more to agree on than others. Whilst, as I've said before, Elvis and his music remains prolific, appealing, and valued by a record label and an estate that continues to find ways of stoking his legacy. We'll see more projects and perhaps some new ideas at some point in the near future. Of that I've no doubt.
If you wanna see Elvis sitting at #1 on the charts again...just do a duets package with today`s biggest artists like Adele or Taylor Swift

I guess that would be the likely result. But, the success wouldn’t be because of Elvis, it would be who ever the duet was with.

It would have made more sense to use Take 3, the master here, and then add this take to the Religious Sides on Disc 2 where it’s obviously missing (though not recorded as part of the gospel takes, though that’s where it could be argued it should appear) -- and there was enough disc space.

EARLY MORNIN’ RAIN is one line longer, while (THAT’S WHAT YOU GET) FOR LOVIN’ ME is a line and a half longer.

I think you are taking the term 'master' too literally here. The first disc does include all the master takes, but some have false starts and longer fades. The same approach was taken with the previous Nashville set, and it gives the disc a work in progress theme.

The breakdowns on the piano songs were edited out of the '70's masters versions for obvious reasons. Personally, I would have preferred Sony to have taken this approach here - particularly as the first 10 tracks on disc one give a good overview of how the country / folk album was progressing - and therefore it would be nice to have complete versions of each song. But I can see why Sony have taken this approach.

With regards to Amazing Grace, I think the producer's felt that the bluesy alternate would have been a better choice for the country / folk album - had it materialised back in '71.

The undubbed master [take 5] appears on disc 1.

The outtakes [1 & 2] appear on disc 3.

Thanks for your responses. But I don't understand, as the 'blues' version (if it's Take 2) has Elvis singing a few extra words in the first verse as follows:

Amazing grace
Oh, how sweet, SWEET the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now, NOW I'M found
Was blind, but now I see.

This would not be the master as supposedly heard on Disc 1, as the master first heard on the HE TOUCHED ME album's first verse is as follows:

Amazing grace
Oh, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now I see.

I'm pretty sure AMAZING GRACE on Disc 1 and Disc 3 (the second take, after he messes up the words on verse one as heard on the preceeding short false start) are the SAME!
