lvis Presley: Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden (3-CD)
(Follow That Dream) Limited to 2 copies per customer/household, if you buy more than 2 you will receive a refund.
After Elvis completed a hugely successful and sold-out tour filmed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for the 1972 documentary 'Elvis On Tour' in April, confidence was high in the Elvis camp with all four shows at New York's Madison Square Garden sold out, as did the rest of the June tour. Any reservations Elvis might have had about performing in the Big Apple were quickly dispelled as the noise from the MSG crowd was deafening. The New York Times 'Arts and Leisure' headline summing up the triumph read 'Like a Prince From Another Planet'.
Elvis As Recorded at Madison Square Garden with the evening show of June 10 was a rush release later in the month and sold a million copies in the US in just a few weeks. Total US sales to date exceed 3 million, achieving triple platinum status. The afternoon show was eventually released by RCA as An Afternoon In The Garden in 1997, 20 years after Elvis' death.
This belated FTD 50th Anniversary Edition celebrates these legendary shows with remixed versions of both shows by Memphis recording engineer Matt-Ross Spang. Disc 3 contains the original press conference, recorded at the New York Hilton on June 9th.
Packaged in our 8' x 8' 'Sessions' slipcase, this deluxe 3-CD includes a 20-page color booklet, great photos, memorabilia, press conference transcript and reminiscences of the late Phil Gelormine.

The MSG is ridiculous....Prince from another planet is the best and deffinitive release for me....how many more times are they going to treat fans as idiots?....releasing same stuff again and again. I'd rather have some unreleased shows from 76/77 than this...or even a very good AR from an unreleased tour
It goes from bad to worse. Are they incapable of working out that they should have released the Aloha discs this year and the MSG release last year, and not the other way around?
Great MSG release idea with a mix by the excellent Matt Ross Spang.
The one for "Prince" didn't sound like other recent mixes, and this will fix it.
Just as it is sometimes criticized, I now applaud the idea of this.
On the other hand, in the case of Blue Hawaii, it would be interesting to give the alternative option to an 8" ftd option with only 4 cds.

As nice as the Prince From Another Planet box is, I don't think the mixing or mastering was that good, plus there were a few edits done on the AS. If the FTD rectifies these issues then it'll be the go to for me.

Not interested in the Blue Hawaii set at all as I have so many books that cover all the BH stuff. But will definitely go for the MSG release - have been anxiously waiting for that to come out for ages.

Could you please let us know what those few edits were in the afternoon show on the 'prince from another planet' release? I wasn't aware of any edits, I always thought it was the full, unedited show.
"The image is one thing and the human being is another...it's very hard to live up to an image, I'll put it that way"
Elvis at the New York Madison Square Garden press conference, June 9th, 1972.
I won’t buy the MSG set, but I’ll buy The Making of Blue Hawaii. Although I would have prefered a Sessions release as I’m not that interested in the books. I still find it a pity that The Viva Las Vegas Sessions are not sequenced in recording order. Nor is The Making of Viva Las Vegas which I didn’t buy for that reason.
So, the albums that were overlooked for the 7" series, are likely to be issued in the 8" series now at considerably higher prices.
How long is the MSG press conference? From memory I'm guessing about 15 minutes. If that's the case, there should really be additional music on the third disc, or it should have been a two disc set...
Sounds like this should have been a Sony legacy release, as most collectors have this stuff a million times.
FTD should have picked something else.
This is not for me again this time around. I would have bought the Blue Hawaii audio too if it was without the book.
I guess I'm saving money I suppose.
The "Blue Hawaii" box looks fantastic. I think this movie really justifies the deluxe treatment: nice scenery and Elvis looked good.
I think I will also stick to "Prince From Another Planet". Even if this new version may sound better, it doesn't include the AWESOME footage. I doubt I will ever play the afternoon show on CD again. I will play the DVD. I also have the original MSG album on vinyl. So I think I'm good, but I am sure this will be a sucesss for FTD regardless.

If I remember correctly, the most recent FTD 3 CD set cost $55 / £46 so are we taking bets that the new MSG one is going to be around $70 / £55 with the huge hike in printing costs. I hate to think how much BH will be and they’ve included a piece of vinyl too, but why?

but this time they are 2% too fast
A member here was asking for a slowed-down version of the MSG shows the other day and BAM!, wish granted!
I would have bought the four CD of the 'Blue Hawaii' as a sessions set but not with the book and EP which raises the cost considerably, maybe further down the line they may release a four CD sessions set of 'Blue Hawaii' I'll wait for that as I'm only interested in the music.

One before Reconsider Baby, Elvis and Charlie call out for the song, it was mixed out on the box, it was left in on the An Afternoon In The Garden release. One before I Can't Stop Loving You where Glen accidentally starts playing Can't Help Falling In Love. The latter is way too obvious if you listen for it.
Are they really dedicating a whole CD to a fifteen minute press conference?, why not re-release the AR performance from the 9th with the press conference tagged on to the end of that. Then at least those that didn't purchase the FTD book set get to hear that performance now, and it makes it better value for money for a three disc set of material we mostly all have .
"If you're in old habits
Set in your old ways
Changes are a-comin'
For these are changing days
And if your head is in the sand
While things are goin' on
What you need is a Change of Habit"
Reason to buy this set?
We know FTD's with limited production copies will increase in value heavily.
As far as the sound goes, PFAP will be hard to beat but let's see.
Anyway, the 3rd disc is lousy, should have been a soundboard from the June tour for example.
