That was what I was referring to.
I’m really only interested in the rehearsal concert anyway.

Why did FTD release Aloha and only with the main show remixed? Maybe they didn’t know Sony would release it? But surely the engineer remixed both shows at the same time …

So that fans would still have had something to look forward to when the main label does?

Re: Aloha From Hawaii (Deluxe Edition) coming to streaming services August 11th
The argument has been made that the FTD version was meant to fill a gap in the "Classic Album" series (although the FTD Aloha does not match the Classic Album packaging). If that is the case, shouldn't it have come out years earlier? Is anyone really going to be fussed over not having a Classic Album version of the shows rather than a mainstream Sony release? My Sony Elvis releases seem to get along nicely on the shelf with my FTD releases without too much fuss or muss (although, most all the releases do make fun of the 1976 soundboards...I hate having to break up those fights). At best, this is an ill timed series of releases. At worst, this is taking advantage of the Elvis fan in a way, that I don't think even Col. Tom Parker would have contemplated.
I did an A/B comparison of the 2 shows on the FTD Aloha set the other day, and while the newest remix of the main show was better to my ears than the older remix of the rehearsal show, the difference is not so great that I really see the need to "upgrade" to this new Sony Aloha. If, and it's a big if, the Blu ray is significantly better than the old DVD set (which is iffy, as it was shot on videotape so it will always be in SD. but a good Bly ray encode could perhaps "open" the image a bit) I may consider buying this new Aloha box. otherwise. it's a pass for me. The main show (which is the most important of the shows) has a nice remix on the FTD, and I'm still happy with the DVD set.
Also, buyer beware. based on the pics online, the new Sony Aloha will have their typical packaging where the CDs get jammed in from the left side opening, as opposed to the much nicer FTD packaging where the CD's sort of slide downwards into a nice opening in the middle of each "block" of the packaging.

Hi,
I recently received an advance copy of the set and these are my first impressions.
The original album is the same as on the FTD and the rehearsal show is remixed/remastered and sounds really good. Bonus material, the after-show recordings, are as on the FTD release.
Nice to have both concerts and the after-show recordings on one disc but to my ears and eyes the blu-ray is the same as the DVD and there is no improvement
Packaging/booklet is excellent and in my opinion better than the FTD release. And for those who asked, the CDs slot in from the top as on the FTD and are easy to remove.
I wonder what the reasoning was for releasing this material on both FTD and Legacy and if I had to pick one it would be this new release… and it is a lot cheaper.
I am planning another Elvis article/review for my blog soon (https://peter-lewry.blogspot.com/?m=0)

Re: Aloha From Hawaii (Deluxe Edition) coming to streaming services August 11th
Hi I was hoping that the Blu Ray would be an improvement on the DVD in picture and audio.
So looks like just a cut and paste from the DVD.
I have the Star version of Aloha main show on DVD. and the video used is the 40th amniversary wide screen version and the Audio is from the recent FTD. and its an excellent production if only Sony had gone down that route instead of the easy cut and paste job

What is a widescreen version? I wasn’t aware it was filmed in widescreen for regular TVs back then. Also you have to remember that any additional work required on trying to improve something like the video and newmmoie wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 12:49 pmHi I was hoping that the Blu Ray would be an improvement on the DVD in picture and audio.

resynched sound, results in additional costs which then has to be passed onto the consumer with little guarantee that it is going to be a lot better.

Re: Aloha From Hawaii (Deluxe Edition) coming to streaming services August 11th
No it was not filmed in widesreen.
But when it was shown in Hawaii on a big screen in Hawaii for the 40th amniversary they redone it in widescreen using spilt screens so you see 3 different camera angles at the same time the 3 pictures making the widescreen.
It was subsequently released on DVD by Graceland for the 40 th anniversary.
And I think sold at Graceland only.
Star took this version and made a few edits adding footage from before the show and using the FTD audio.
It looks like this version will b my go to version.
As regards costs .
Judging by previous review nothing has been done to enhance picture or audio .Just a cut and paste job from DVD.
Why then release it on Blu Ray .
As usual they take the cheap and easy way out.
If Star can do it why cant Sony.
U should try and get the Star version u won't b disappointed.

I have no idea who Star are, but is their release official and sanctioned by EPE and Sony/RCA? I’m guessing that by putting both shows and all the other stuff on to a Blu-Ray disc allows them to get it on to one disc.mmoie wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 2:04 pmNo it was not filmed in widesreen.

emjel, did you not buy the 40th Anniversary DVD ? Its an official release. (I think)
Picture quality was great and lots of new angles shown..only drawback for me was some of the "special effects" were over used and cheap looking.

Re: Aloha From Hawaii (Deluxe Edition) coming to streaming services August 11th
I think they're talking about this release... which uses the FTD audio of the main show and footage from some other sources. it's second or third generation and IMO it ain't that good... not even as good as the 2004 DVD footage. I watched it once and put it away. I think people think because it's new, it must be better...emjel wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 2:15 pmI have no idea who Star are, but is their release official and sanctioned by EPE and Sony/RCA? I bought the deluxe release that came out in 2004 which from memory was the same time as the deluxe ‘68 Special came out and was put out via Sony/EPE. That gave me everything I needed for this show and no idea if this latest release from Star is a legal or illegal copy of the one that came out for the 40th.

Split screen /16:9 is nice but on the 40th dvd they also did triple split screen, converting Elvis into a miniature.
Also agree the edits looked cheap and home made.
I'm sure someday Aloha will be truly be enhanced and until then the 2004 edit is the go to version, and perhaps the upcoming blu ray..
(if upscaled decently)

I don’t have many Star releases but I did get their Aloha and it is fabulous. Looking forward to the box sent though as I don’t have the FTD from a last year.

Re: Aloha From Hawaii (Deluxe Edition) coming to streaming services August 11th
The reason I received an advance copy was to write a review and promote the release and there was no embargo on posting about it before release date, something that happens sometimes. I’ve worked with Sony Music for more than thirty years during my work as a freelance journalist/author and consultant and during that time received and reviewed more advance copies than I can remember. I know from past experience they have appreciated the reviews I have posted on various sites including my blog.On Tape 1972 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 7:34 pmThanks. Thanks - And that’s how these companies can offer these things at attractive prices as they don’t pay royalties and other legal fees which Sony are required to do. As I explained to @ mmoie, doing additional work like attempting to clean up the image and syncing the footage to the newly remixed FTD audio, costs time and money, which just pushes the price up to the consumer and is likely to go over the price line which non collectors and probably many fans who bought the FTD release, would be willing to pay. I decided to order it because I had a £10 Amazon voucher so it only cost me £17.elvis-fan wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 9:12 pmThe STAR release is a boot...emjel wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 4:20 pmI bought the deluxe release that came out in 2004 which from memory was the same time as the deluxe ‘68 Special came out and was put out via Sony/EPE. Disappointed there is no improvement on the bluray/dvd but certainly not surprised as I was expectng they would use the dvd and just put a bluray logo on it to fool people.
