Re: FTD / Flaming Star - The Making Of Blue Hawaii
I believe the following titles have a good chance of being released in the Making Of series: G.I. Blues, Loving You, 68 Comeback, Fun In Acapulco. As for the other titles, they either don't have enough audio material or don't have the potential for this type of book.
I would really like FTD to standardize this type of release and limit it to 350 pages. It would be more cheaper.

Re: FTD / Flaming Star - The Making Of Blue Hawaii
It’s a nice choice but there are published a few books already with your choice. Besides a limit to 350 pages for these kind of books doesnot sell in my opinion. The fans want photo’s a much as possible.dougkapp wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 4:11 amI believe the following titles have a good chance of being released in the Making Of series: G.I. Personally I don’t care about photo’s. I want included as much as possible documents about the songselection – demos – script - shooting etc.
On the other side I like to see books about movies where is not published a lot. From the mid sixties and later but these are not the best movies!!.

I'd love a making of book about Tickle Me or Live a Little, Love a Little -- 100 pages of the leading ladies pictures works for me.colonel snow wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 8:15 pmIt’s a nice choice but there are published a few books already with your choice. Re: FTD / Flaming Star - The Making Of Blue Hawaii
Given that this is a collectors label, it’s not essential that they cover career highlights. I think a book about it happened at the world’s fair would be interesting. I’d like to learn more about the making of the MGM deal (this was the first movie) and how it was made because the planned tour went down. It happened at the world’s fair represents a turning point on Elvis career. Until then, it was:
- one pop album per year (1960 had the extr gospel one)
- strong single sessions (they always looked for strong singles)
- at least one “serious” or different movie a year (flaming star, wild in the country, kid Galahad, follow that dream).
- just one big Elvis musical with a soundtrack LP, by Hal Wallis .
In 1962, when the live tour didn’t happen, MGM entered the picture and everything changed. It even affected the music releases, because there was some criticism for the world’s fair lp short playing time, so fun in Acapulco got 2 bonus tracks.
Besides, the whole recording sessions need a release and an update.

Roustabout, or "The Roustabout," as it was first announced, would probably have been made and released in 1962 had it not been for Elvis's agreement with MGM.frus75 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 10:01 amGiven that this is a collectors label, it’s not essential that they cover career highlights. Now that I have “The Making of”, does anyone see a reason I should hold on to the 2CD FTD set?

Re: FTD / Flaming Star - The Making Of Blue Hawaii
I think you’ll find that the book covers the tours Elvis did in 1972 so an extension to Elvis on Tour but without any actual reference to the movie within it - I.e. no data from the movie like they did with TTWII. I don’t see it covering Vegas or recording sessions during that year.frus75 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 11:27 pmI’m still thinking that a 1972 book could be a good house for the complete 1972 Hollywood sessions and the complete 1972 Vegas recordings. That could be 3-4 cds.
These book projects are an amazing piece of work, and are stellar. As Will Friedwald used to say about the Sinatra cd boxes, they give you more furniture than your local IKEA.
The audio material on those books has evolved from bonus to essential. On the Viva Las Vegas book, the music was just a bonus. They could have done like Blue Hawaii and release the sessions as part of the book, but they’ve already been released.
Then they did the TTWII double book and the music was in part officially unreleased, but for the most part we already knew the material, and the sound was compromised too.
Comes Jailhouse Rock and the material Gad already been released on the classic albums, but here it was monaural an fully organized.
But Blue Hawaii has raised the gamble. The sound is amazing and the sessions are complete and with new unreleased material too. Luckily for those who can’t afford the book or simply don’t want it, the label will offer the music on its own later on.
In all, amazing work and amazing product. Top notch quality. I know they were lesser movies and were not high points on his career, but these books leave me considering viable to have GI Blues or even it happened at the world’s fair with complete sessions too.

If FTD go down that route, they’d better prepare themselves for some really harsh criticism from those who paid for the book/cd set.Mike Windgren wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 1:22 pmHi there!! .

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know a contact email address for the NDT shop that sells FTD releases. Or is it "editor@…..”. I had a query and completed their webpage form, but no acknowledgement or response so no idea if it was received. Thanks.

I think it was allready announced that a separate FTD Blue Hawaii disc would be released later this year. No need for criticism.

Re: FTD / Flaming Star - The Making Of Blue Hawaii
The criticism comes from the possibility that the stand alone cds feature more material than the cds on the book (I strongly feel it won’t be that way).Edwin wrote:I think it was allready announced that a separate FTD Blue Hawaii disc would be released later this year. No need for criticism.

Re: FTD / Flaming Star - The Making Of Blue Hawaii
I think you’re missing the point being made above. If they release the audio only set as per the way it was released in the boxset, then no problem. But if they put it out with more stuff on it, then that is what would cause the criticism, and much in the same way as fans who bought into the FTD Aloha set are now being forced to buy the set again IF they want the remixed rehearsal show.

Re: FTD / Flaming Star - The Making Of Blue Hawaii
It would seem that none of the information that I wrote yesterday where i thought that the forthcoming book covers the tours Elvis did in 1972 and not Sessions etc etc, is accurate. So it is certainly going to be interesting to see what the book actually does cover if I was wrong about covering the ‘72 tours. But probably not long to go now before all is revealed.

Okee, fair point. When there's extra on the cd, criticism is very understandable.emjel wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 3:21 pmI think you’re missing the point being made above. Your correct that your previous post regarding the contents of the forthcoming FTD 1972 set is inaccurate.
