The Mike Douglas Show In Elvis Las Vegas Suite 1975

Post by OnTourCam »

Came Across these photos tonight new to my eyes
Would love to see the Episode to hear what they chat about and how did it come about them shooting an episode in the suite I am assuming Elvis was out of town at the time ?

For any Fans on this board can you recall watching this when it aired ?

I was also surprised about the deco it had colours very similar to the TV room at Graceland :)

Here's one of the photos similar to the one on the table (Elvis and Henri Lewin from September '73)
I think the photo on the table has George Parkhill cut out of it...

No, Elvis wasn't in town. The program aired in November 1975, having taped five shows in late October in Las Vegas. The theme was "Mike in Las Vegas."

The singer was on break in Memphis, watching movies at the Crosstown Theater almost every night and enjoying his newest toy, an airplane he christened the Lisa Marie. He'd fly to Vegas in late November to prep for his December engagement at the Hilton.

Why an interview in the Presley Hilton suite? Henri and brother Werner Lewin ran the Hiltons in San Francisco and Las Vegas for years, Elvis no doubt knew both. In a side note, my mom knew Werner, as she taught at least one of his sons when they were in grammar school, and she heard stories about meeting Presley. She was told he was super nice, no surprise there.

From the same visit with TV host Mike Douglas we have Henri Lewin holding his cropped photo with Presley. It was taken backstage before Elvis late show on 9-01-1973.

The complete shot is seen below. Sorry George Parkhill!

I believe I actually have this segment from the show . I had a Betamax early and recorded everything I could. If I can locate the clip I'll try to upload to YT and give a link here. Let me look - it may take a day or two

This is really great to see. Another little piece of the puzzle, thank you!

So the photos that launched the topic are not from October 1975, but about two years later, a remembrance of Elvis after he passed.

Which means host Mike Douglas had Henri Lewin on as a guest twice. I'll see if I can locate a 1977 source for Lewin on the program.

Thanks especially for the John Davidson segment. He's still with us at 81, and still an active performer!

The interview confirms my opinion of Mr. Douglas. He discovered America as he singled out that Elvis liked red, that he loved peanut butter and banana sandwiches, that he climbed the walls when he wanted to have Mike Stone disappear, then he brilliantly added, quite matter of factly, that once, when shooting a gun, the bullet Elvis shot went through the walls which in turn almost killed his then girlfriend, He then heralded the interview, with class to spare, when he questioned whether anybody was ever hurt there. LOL.

But the gentleman he interviewed, Mr. Henry Levin, always outclassed him with his stupendous answers. One after the other. Alas, I wonder why Douglas seemed unaware that Truman Capote was quoted as saying that he knew, by a source inside the kitchen of the International, that he was the only person he have ever been invited by Elvis to dinner, at that same dinner table which was shown and which he even mentioned. Wouldnt that have been a better suited topic of conversation?

As to Mr. Douglas, may he rest in ETERNAL, RECLUSIVE peace.

Yes it was an interesting interview, particularily when obvious questions were asked that had been mentioned in the sensational book "Elvis:What Happened?" .

Well, more research brings up more curious information. There is an episode in 1977 where Henri Lewin returned to the program, October 10, 1977 (Monday). It was exactly a week after CBS-TV aired the posthumous Presley special, "Elvis In Concert."

TV Today

4:00 (3) Mike Douglas - From Las Vegas. Guests: Rich Little, Ben Vereen, Paul Nicholas, singer; The Stupids, comedic acrobats; Dave Barry, comedian; Henri Lewin, senior vice president, Hilton Hotel Corp.; Ann Miller, actress-dancer; The Third Generation Steps, dance team.

Philadelphia Inquirer - Monday, October 10, 1977
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/173612438/

So, there it is, right?

BUT . . . your video does not feature any of those other people with host Mike Douglas when he tells the viewer about the Lewin interview in the Hilton suite. Instead, it shows him with game show host Peter Marshall, actor Tony Randall and others.

Then, when the interview has a break in the middle, we see the message "NEXT WEEK: MIKE IN NASHVILLE!" so it's a Friday show. And at the end is another message, "NEXT: INTRODUCING LAURA BRANIGAN."

Well, these things did not happen in 1977. Mike did a week in Nashville starting on Monday, May 29, 1978.

The clip is from Friday, May 26, 1978.

Philadelphia Inquirer - Friday, May 26, 1978

It seems that Lewin was a favorite any time the show went to Las Vegas.

But what did they talk about in October 1977? Hmm.

Thanks again for the share, Greybeard. Looking forward to the John Davidson clip.

Elvis didn't buy that suite. If Frank Sinatra wanted to stay there, I am sure he could do it when Elvis was not there.

Try watching the video posted by Greybeard. The Hilton's Henri Lewin answers this question. You can do that, yeah?

FYI, as noted, the Lewin interview seen here aired on the May 26, 1978 (Friday) broadcast.

I did some more research and found that the Linda Thompson appearance was not from this broadcast, but two weeks later, on April 12, 1978 (Wed).

TV Today

[snip]

4:00 (3) Mike Douglas - Guests: Robert Goulet (cohost), Natalie Cole, The cast of "Grease," Kip Addotta, Robert Hegyes and Linda Thompson.

Philadelphia Inquirer - Wednesday, April 12, 1978
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/173227538/

Interestingly, the cast of "Grease" were from the upcoming film, which would become an absolute iconic hit. There that day were John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway and Didi Conn. Pretty cool. It would hit theaters in June.

Finally, that Tommy Sands clip must be from his appearance on the same show about two weeks later, April 24, 1978 (Mon).

TV Today

[snip]

4:00 (3) Mike Douglas - Cohost: Anson Williams. Guests: Tommy Sands, Billy Gray, Billy Fellows, Les Paul, '50 Fads and Helena Howard.

Philadelphia Inquirer - Monday, April 24, 1978
https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/173065562/

You have a compilation Beta tape there.

Of course, folks today have no idea how expensive blank video tape cartridges were back then. I remember.
