Been a few years since I watched Aloha and had a never seen that moment during A Big Hunk with Elvis throwing water over Charlie and then the cup which Charlie missed resulting in it bouncing along the stage.

Colours do seem brighter on this release but that could be down to a change of equipment since last watching, and I did notice a couple of brief blurring of image as previously mentioned but no frame lagging.

It's a beautiful package and I believe great value for money and glad I purchased a copy.
Crazy Kookie me always thought it was Glen Hardin that Elvis threw the remaining water at !?
It was Glen Hardin that Elvis tossed the water at in the rehearsal show
during "A Big Hunk o' Love", and Charlie, Jerry & Elvis got a good chuckle out of it.

However, it's hard to tell exactly who Elvis was aiming at during the main satellite show.
I think Charlie might've gotten a little wet.

Thanks,it was the main show I was referring to as I haven't got round to the rehearsal show yet, didn't know he threw water during that show as well so will watch out for it.

Despite the overall good result of the remixes for both shows I still can't stand the sound of the drums.
They always sound to me like somebody uses an oversized plastic laundry basket or whatever. Why do the drums sound so destinctively different here than on all other recordings?

Trying to understand all this, lot's of negativity not much positivity. So am I correct in saying the following

1. Disc 1 is an exact copy of Ftd disc 1
2. Disc 2 is a new Matt Ross Sprang remix
3. Disc 3 is an exact copy of disc 3 FTD
4. Blu-ray is visually no upgrade at all on the 3 disc dvd version and not as complete but the sound is an upgrade

Is this basically what we have in this release?

The new mix (by Matt Ross-Spang) of the main show on January 14, 1973 was mastered by Jan Eliasson. So if the LP is noting that the mastering was done by Vic Anesini, the conclusion is that the LP contains the original 1973 mix... just putting that out there in case it wasn't clear. I get the LP today so I'll confirm if someone hasn't already by the time I get mine...
The FTD was mastered by Eliasson. The new Legacy CD + LP were mastered by Anesini.
Are you sure about that?
The booklet is. But I'll check...

2018 Where No One Stands Alone Billboard 200 album Charts # 22
30 #1 now #168 in it`s 165 weeks on this charts
The Searcher did made into the Charts: BB 200 #145 and Country Album charts #17
Also the The Essential Elvis Presley album made a charts comeback last year (already 102 nweeks)
Over 30 Elvis albums in this century already in to the BB 200

Listen to yourself.

You're suggesting a five year old album making #145 in the charts is a sign of Elvis being popular.

I think you've lost the argument if that's the best you can do.
You said Boy from Tupelo and The Searcher soundtrack didn't chart in the US and i did show that it did.
I do not class anything outside the top 100 as chatting.

So, after all cd 1 and 3 are not exact copies of FTD given that they are mastered by Vic Anesini.

Given that Eliasson is out and Anesini is in, I will now order the new Aloha set although I have FTD version.

Is that chatting or charting?  these days you only need to sell around 7,000 copies to hit 100. So #145 is going to be around 4k to 5k which is pretty poor for the size of the US population. The On Tour set couldn’t even make 2.5k to get into the Billboard 200.

Hi, I returned my copy as mentioned as the package was squished. I just got my replacement from Amazon, very quickly so fair play Amazon. I had to laugh at the packaging, it's gone from the inadequate to the ridiculous. But I think they got the point :D

Much appreciated!

I know the rehearsal show is the new mix by MRS.
Is the main show exactly the same, mix AND master, as on the FTD release?

The mastering of CD 1 + 3 on the Sony set is definitely not the same as on the FTD set. Vic Anesini reduces the background noise on CD 3, which now is much more pleasant to listen to. In adjustment to this, he has reduced the treble on CD 1 by a very small nuance. Very nice job, Vic.
Maybe this information will help some of you.😃

The sound is an upgrade of sorts. Not remastered or remixed but with an uncompressed stereo LPCM and 5.1 LPCM track along with the Dolby Digital 5.1. Where as the DVD had Stereo and 5.1 Dolby Digital but not uncompressed.

Picture improvement? Debatable, as some have said colours appear to pop a bit more. You can be fooled into thinking you are seeing a bit more detail on the close up and medium shots. However pop in the DVD and you realise the likes of the eagle's head is just as visible on Elvis's jumpsuit. Possibly a bit of edge enhancement going on which works better on close ups where as long shots are still very blurry which is just what you get with video shot standard definition. The available amount of pixels on the source material can render quite a clean image for close up and medium shots with some decent up-scaling applied. However a long shot that has Elvis, band members, arena backdrop and audience is just too much detailed information with out enough pixels elements (dots) in the original source to make a clear image on a modern 4K 65 inch screen.

Even if you have the FTD if you can afford it then I would go for it. We are not talking mega bucks with some places selling for as little as £18 it is a good package.

I have to disagree. I listened to the blu ray choosing the Dolby Digital 5.1 option.
I thought it sounded better than what we've had before. Far from perfect, but just
better.

Hello everyone, Got mine!
As an engineer, I couldn't resist the urge to conduct a thorough self-check! 😄💡

I've compared the 2004 Deluxe DVD version and the Remaster Group edition with the new 2023 Blu-Ray.

Here's what I discovered:

Blu-Ray 2023 v.s 2004 Deluxe DVD version:

Sample:

Watching both side by side I see a nice improvement from the 2004 Edition!

Blu-Ray 2023 v.s Remaster Group edition:

Hmmm... This proves to be quite challenging... I believe I have a preference for the Remaster Group edition.

What do you say? And the winner is????

I still have to check the audio 🙌

At the event of Aloha, who was performing before Elvis? The Sweet Inspirations or The Stamps or even some Hawaiin performers?
Does the whole event exists on video?

Not sure the order of the support performances. However, the the video recording only started after 2001 theme, with visuals starting as Elvis took to the stage for See See Rider.

Great job, thank you Carlos. Although I think, the comparison on a computer leaves out the possibility of an upscaling of the DVD. I've been watching it on a TV with very good upscaling and the difference between Blu-ray and DVD in terms of sharpness is almost gone.

Your screenshots on the other hand show, what bothered me the most about the Blu-ray. The colour of Elvis' face is very natural on the DVD, but on the Blu-ray he looks slightly "red". We had that mentioned earlier (see quote below). I'm not so sure that it has anything to do with the make-up.

Thanks to the wonderful definition of blu-ray we now know that Elvis was in fact badly sunburnt. :-)

This is how it is on my pc and tv anyway. Elvis' face is oddly red on the blu-ray.

Image
His tan does appear to be a bit deeper in the Blu. I chalk that up to, perhaps a bit of color boosting. Looking at the DVDs though, his tan is pretty dark there too. The Blu Ray makes him look like he has heavy TV makeup on.
The better the quality of these TV performances gets, the more you can see the heavy make up he had on. You can see the same on the 68 DVD's and of course EIC, where it seems like they tried to make him look like a circus clown.

The only future hope for this material is AI upscaling which is becoming increasingly sophisticated. It will be able to intelligently recreate the missing information in terms of definition. The use of 35mm still photographs from Aloha and 68 could likely be scanned into a computer to provide the AI programme with more detailed image information to re-animate the original footage which would essentially act as a sort of storyboard template for AI to write over. Done this way it would not really be fake in-terms of what we are seeing with other AI related projects, as everything that was sung and all actions would be the same as actually happened.
Great observation, Gary. I'd love to see this done in the not-too-distant future, but I doubt Sony would want to spend the money. :( But perhaps Apple (or whoever owns the rights) could do that with some Beatles' TV shows recorded on video? :smt002

Incidentally, this same technology could be used to "properly" colour-ize black & white movies/TV shows (i.e. using actual behind-the-scenes colour photos from on-set for the missing colour information). But I certainly believe that the original B&W should always be available if/when new colour-ized versions are done.

Maybe FTD will release it on a super deluxe version in 18 months time along with the original Quad mix and a 400 page book.
Don't even kid about that...
Yes, I really wish somebody would release the quad mix on blu-ray audio (as well as the other EP quad albums)!

Well, Today before I took the vinyl back, I decided to take a listen and I could automatically tell there was a difference.

It actually sounds great, and I also compared it to my ‘77 black label re-issue and it blew it out of the water.
