See that? Laws. That makes it legal. Can you understand that?

U.K. PD laws are a corrupt grey market label's best friend.

The laws were passed in the whole of Europe. The U.K. kept them after leaving the EU - Canada have a similar law.

But these recordings have not fallen into Public Domain as the recordings were issued prior to the expiry date of 31st December 2023.
Yes but with just 14 days until 2024...I would bet no one will have a copy until early 2024
But many fans already have these via the FTD releases that cover these shows and why the recordings are therefore not in Public Domain. And that’s why I don’t necessarily believe this is quite as straight forward as just stealing them from FTD unless Sony really aren’t that bothered about it. These soundboard shows are not something that I could see Sony wanting to release into mainstream and what are the chances of FTD re-releasing them again based on past evidence. And if that’s the case, it means FTD have tapes in a locker or recordings on a hard disc that is not earning them any money. Sell them to a third party who will then be taking the financial risk of doing something with them and maybe even have a clause in the sale agreement which also stipulates that if the third party sells well and in excess of a certain number of copies, a small percentage goes back to Sony too.

As I wrote, it might seem silly at first glance, but certainly not impossible, and I just look at these things from a financial accountants perspective and if FTDs finances are struggling a bit and they want to buy more tapes that they have not got, but do not have the funds, then that would be a possible way to help do it. After all, even fans sell bits of their collection to help fund the purchase of something new that they now want. Just food for thought.

It’s been obvious that they’ve lifted from official sources, this release just makes it undeniable.
In some cases, it's been obvious. But, again, the Jan/Feb 1971 recordings were not, as FTD didn't release their versions until several months afterwards PLUS the sources in those cases were clearly different. MRS were seemingly working from copies several times removed from the clearer tapes FTD used. The same is true of the opening night 1972 release. That couldn't be from FTD, because FTD haven't released it.

That doesn't affect this release, though, which is clearly taken from the FTD - there is presumably no other source that they could have worked from.
But that’s the part we don’t know. Did anyone make copies of these soundboards back in the day. Someone said that all soundboards were recorded and given to RCA but if that was the case, how did Bruce Jackson end up with some that he then went on to sell to FTD. i would assume the earlier FTD releases are protected because they are not in public domain, but if there was another source that provided MRS, that’s not quite the same as just copying FTD discs.
I don’t think this is quite as crystal clear as many would like - if there was a copyright infringement, it doesn’t make any sense that Sony/FTD would simply ignore it. And as silly as this might seem, is there any chance that Sony or FTD sold the tapes (not licensed them) to MRS. It’s doubtful that Sony as a company would be interested in selling them via mainstream, and perhaps FTD see no further interest or reason to keep hold of them as they are unlikely to re-issue them. FTD get a quick cash injection and the risk of producing a new release falls onto MRS.
I very much doubt that there would be interaction between FTD and MRS along those lines. Certainly, the 1971 Jan/Feb set doesn't appear to come from the same tapes as the FTD release that followed it. The FTD has less distortion, for a start, and seems to have a much cleaner sound overall. We also know that the September 1970 soundboard has nothing to do with FTD. That said, if MRS aren't using the FTDs as their source on most other releases, it seems something of a coincidence that they are releasing the same concerts in the main.
Oh i’m not suggesting any agreement related to previous releases but just now and perhaps going forward and dependant on the quality of the original recordings. The point is that whilst it could be seen as doubtful that an agreement like that could happen, conversely, it does not mean it is impossible and would not. If someone had said back in 1972 that Elvis would sell his recording catalogue to his record company, people would have dismissed that as being a ludicrous thought and that it would never happen.

You’ll have to clarify that a little better. MRS calls it his mission statement, but who does "his" refer to?

FTD's lack of response to addressing these issues brings us closer to the demise if FTD.

So it's no surprise fans will turn elsewhere for their product.

I am quite surprised by this as we all know where they got the audio from. Still sometimes the 'Stereo' they produce is impressive. Hmm?
That's for sure! :)
SENSATIONAL in fact.
Both the 1972 Opening Show and 1972 Closing Night Show audio remasters were a revelation.
FANTASTIC quality.

Of course everyone says MRS is stealing the audio but no one on FECC ever complained when Madison with ‘A Hilton Double Shot’ or Rock Legends with 'I'll Remember You' put out the bootlegs of Elvis' same 1972 Closing Show.

They were "our heroes" for putting out illegal stolen material sold via dodgy dealers at a high price, whereas MRS are just horrible people putting out the same product via a registered UK company and putting it on Amazon for sale. :wtf: :facep: :wtf: :facep:

and SERIOUSLY, the MRS audio remaster of 1972 Closing Night puts Madison's, Rock Legends' and also FTD's version to shame.
There is no way you can go back to the hissy old versions when you hear the MRS remaster.

Cheers
Piers

Back then the bootleggers gave us new material.
Nobody ever cared where it came from.
But just copying officially released stuff and tampering with it wasnt appreciated even back then..LPs like Born To Rock or Lakeland Florida Show come to my mind...bad style...

Do you actually sit down and re-read your comments and then consider how ridiculous some of them anre. are.

If FTD have already released the recordings, and fans have already bought them, and MRS according to you are just copying what FTD have already released, why would fans waste money to buy the MRS release? How would that affect FTD’s income?

If you are suggesting that fans will also buy the MRS releases that are in the Public Domain and because they have created some kind of stereo sound, and so FTD lose out, that is more FTDs fault for not identifying the market potential and not putting out such releases before MRS do it.

If MRS put out something new prior to FTD putting it out, once again, that is not MRS’s fault but FTDs. Further, and under that scenario, if FTD have not yet released it, then MRS cannot have stolen it from them. If FTD have not released something prior to the recordings falling into public domain, once again, that is not MRS’s fault but FTD’s for preventing them from said recordings falling into public domain.

If you are suggesting that MRS have an advantage over FTD because they sell their products across Europe and the U.K. via record shops and places like Amazon, then once again, that is the fault of FTD’s business model - there is nothing that I am aware of that restricts FTD from selling their releases in similar outlets - it’s down to their choice. Also, anyone outside the collector fan base who stumbled across a MRS release in a record shop may then be encouraged to seek out some of the Sony live show releases.

If FTD folds, it certainly will not be because of MRS, a company which puts out a fraction of what FTD does, and according to you, only release stuff that FTD have already released and which fans already own and are unlikely to buy again. And if there are a small number who do not buy FTD product and prefer to wait in the hope that MRS do put out a similar release sometime later, then you need to ask why collector fans would do that. If the answer is because the MRS releases offer better value for money, then once again, it’s down to FTD to up their game and take control of the market so that no one has any reason to buy MRS releases.

Bottom line here is that the ball seems to be well and truly in FTD’s court.
