Ranking the presidents in 2024.

A new ranking of presidents by a group of self-styled experts determined that Abraham Lincoln is America's greatest president, while Donald Trump ranks last.

Lincoln topped the list of presidents in the 2024 Presidential Greatness Project expert survey for the third time, following his top spot in the rankings in the 2015 and 2018 versions of the survey.

According to a release from the Presidential Greatness Project, which touts itself as the "foremost organization of social science experts in presidential politics," the 154 respondents to the survey included "current and recent members of the Presidents & Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association…as well as scholars who have recently published peer-reviewed academic research in key related scholarly journals or academic presses."

Rating and Ranking the Presidents

The primary purpose of this survey was to create a ranking of presidential greatness that covered all presidents from George Washington to Joe Biden. To do this, we asked respondents to rate each president on a scale of 0-100 for their overall greatness, with 0=failure, 50=average, and 100=great. We then averaged the ratings for each president and ranked them from highest average to lowest.

The results of this ranking are quite similar to the results from our previous surveys (released in 2015 and 2018): Abraham Lincoln again tops the list (95.03 average), followed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt (90.83), George Washington (90.32), Teddy Roosevelt (78.58), Thomas Jefferson (77.53), Harry Truman (75.34), Barack Obama (73., and Dwight Eisenhower (73.73). The most notable changes in this ordering are Franklin Delano Roosevelt moving up to #2 from the third spot last year, and Dwight Eisenhower falling back to #8 from #6 last year. The bottom of the rankings is also relatively stable. Donald Trump rates lowest (10.92), behind James Buchanan (16.71), Andrew Johnson (21.56), Franklin Pierce (24.6), William Henry Harrison (26.01), and Warren Harding (27.76).

What is most noteworthy about the remaining presidents concerns who has risen and fallen over time. Since our initial survey, several presidents have had significant changes in their rankings. Barack Obama has risen 9 places (from #16 to #7), as has Ulysses S. Grant (from #26 to #17), while Andrew Jackson has fallen 12 places (from #9 to #21) and Calvin Coolidge has dropped 7 spots (from #27 to #34).

Pro-Trump lawyer Stefanie Lambert surrendered Thursday to Michigan authorities in connection with her 2020 election tampering indictment, after a wild week where she was labeled a fugitive and spent a night in jail after being arrested in Washington, DC.

The special prosecutor who charged Lambert in Michigan, DJ Hilson, confirmed that she turned herself in Thursday morning and appeared in Oakland County Circuit Court.

“The judge ruled that the Michigan bench warrant is now set aside, and she was taken into custody for the sole purpose of collecting her DNA and fingerprints,” Hilson said.

Lambert’s attorney, Daniel Hartman, also confirmed that she surrendered, as she pledged to do after being released by a local DC judge earlier this week. Hartman said Lambert’s fingerprints will not be entered into the system “until further order of the court.” Lambert has been fighting an effort by prosecutors to take her fingerprints.

The surrender came days after Lambert’s arrest at the federal courthouse in DC. She was taken into custody Monday by US marshals immediately after she participated in a two-hour hearing in Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation case against her client, ex-Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne, regarding his false claims about the 2020 election.

That hearing in the DC-based defamation case was about Lambert’s recent leak of internal Dominion emails, which she obtained through her representation of Byrne. But Lambert’s DC arrest, and her surrender in Michigan on Thursday, were due to a warrant that was issued after she failed to appear at recent hearings in her criminal case.

She was indicted last year in connection with an attempted election system breach in Michigan, which was one of several incidents in battleground states where Donald Trump supporters tried to prove their voter-fraud theories after he lost the 2020 election.

The Affordable Care Act, like most major new legislation, satisfied no one -- but it was a start toward the national heath care insurance plan that the majority of Americans want. It had, and still has, flaws, but it was a good start toward achieving the level of health care most citizens of first-world nations enjoy. Republicans denigrated it as "Obamacare", which delighted President Obama and has become a nationwide byword. They've attempted more than 50 times to repeal it, but never have been able to marshal the votes to do so. Their chief objection was and is that Obama (Democrats) got credit for it, instead of pre-empting that credit by continuously crowing that it is, essentially, the plan Republican Governor Mitt Romney had instituted earlier in Massachusetts. As usual, they've cut off their noses to spite their faces.

And now, even they admit is widely popular with Americans, and very successful.

Its major fault remains that it is not what Americans wanted, and still want: a single-payer system that virtually cuts out insurance companies and HMOs, both of which are keeping the cost of health care much higher than it should be -- and is in most of the rest of the developed world -- without producing even equivalent results. Both parties are to blame for that failing, because politicians of both parties don't want to lose the campaign donations they receive from insurers and HMOs.

The cost of healthcare, including the cost of prescription medications, is driven by greed in business and politics, both of which we voters can fix at the ballot box, and between elections by constantly writing and calling our representatives at every level of government between elections, and demanding that they represent us, not their avaricious backers.

We have the government we elect, ergo, yes, we have the government we deserve.

This week, Donald Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee for president when he swept all but one Super Tuesday state from Nikki Haley, who subsequently dropped out of the race. Predictably, most of the handful of remaining elected officials who had not lined up to endorse Trump soon proved themselves to be lemmings ready to jump off the electoral cliff into the MAGA sea.

Led by Mitch McConnell, these MAGA quislings preach the gospel of Trump even as they know, in their hearts, the existential danger he poses. History will curse them for their cowardice when the nation was in its moment of need.

From the attacks on the 2020 election to his recent efforts to discredit his criminal cases, the four-time indicted former president has lied to the American public, trampled on the U.S. Constitution he swore to uphold and smugly abused the legal process. He has threatened witnesses, intimidated court officials and attacked prosecutors. Aided by a misfit band of loyal attorneys, Trump has advanced bad faith legal arguments and frivolous cases.

Now, having all but gained the nomination, Trump’s assault on the rule of law will have the formal imprimatur of the GOP. We should expect his tactics will become bolder and his rhetoric more dangerous.

While it is at precisely this moment that the courts must stand up for democracy, there are signs they too are faltering. Already, the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decisions to allow him to stay on the primary ballots and to consider his absurd immunity arguments has strengthened the belief that he is above the law.

Trump has so far succeeded in escaping justice by tying up his first federal incitement — for mishandling and failing to return government documents — before a sympathetic federal judge he appointed in Florida.

The Jan. 6 election subversion case against Trump — which was supposed to go to trial this week — remains on hold pending the high court’s ruling, which could come as late as June.

The Georgia election subversion case has become a circus sideshow over claims of an improper personal relationship between two of the prosecutors. It seems impossible for that case to be tried prior to the November election.

Only the New York porn star hush money criminal case seems clearly on track to be heard before the November election. The mere fact that I can write that sentence about someone Republicans just made their presumptive nominee speaks to the moral bankruptcy of the former “Grand” Old Party.

With the fate of democracy hanging in the balance, we are left wondering whether the courts are up to the task of holding Trump accountable at all. Increasingly it seems that they are not.

When it comes to Trump versus the judiciary, the failed former one-term president has serious advantages. The first is his utter shamelessness. Even when judges are wrong, they don’t call people childish names or make up complete lies. Judges do not maintain armies of Twitter trolls to enforce their judgments and cannot unleash shameless surrogates to go on TV on their behalf.

This does not excuse the judiciary’s failures, however. The truth is that nearly every judge who has dealt with Trump in the last four years has paid him too much respect and deference. As a criminal defendant, he has too frequently been afforded rights that no other criminal defendant would receive.

Just as the courts face a pivotal moment, so do those who believe in holding Trump accountable.

Trump has managed to create an assumption among many in the media that his status as a candidate entitles him to special privileges — to make outrageous remarks that threaten the safety of witnesses, jurors and court staff and to delay his criminal trials until after the November election. Though neither the criminal code nor the Department of Justice rules contain a blackout period this fall for trials of political candidates, Trump is acting as if he is entitled to special dispensation.

Let’s be clear, Trump doesn’t want a trial before Election Day or after. He wants to abuse the legal system so that he never faces trial. No criminal defendant has that power, not even a former president. That is, unless the courts cede it to him. No other criminal defendant facing serious felonies is afforded the privilege of blocking out certain months not to stand trial because they are too busy with other matters.

Trump’s criminal trials should begin as soon as the Supreme Court dispatches with his absurd immunity claim. There is no legal reason why they cannot start in August, September or even October.

In fact, there is precedent for exactly this. In 2008, former Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) was indicted on federal bribery charges. Though he was facing a tough November election, his trial started in September and went until nearly the end of October. Stevens went on to lose that election, ending his six-term career in the Senate.

The judges — conservative and liberal alike — handling Trump’s legal matters stand at a crossroads. They will either assert their authority to ensure that all criminal defendants receive equal justice under the law, or they award Trump a special tier of justice for the shameless and powerful.

Just as the courts face a pivotal moment, so do those who believe in holding Trump accountable.

I am aware that many are ready to give up on the courts. They are prepared to accept that Trump will escape judicial accountability.

That too is one of Trump’s powers — the ability to drain hope from those who see him for what he is. Trump wants us to lose hope. He wants his opponents to see the courts as he does: instruments of power that he can manipulate. If we give that to him, we are letting his hopeless vision of an America without justice prevail. Instead, we need to reimagine a more optimistic and dynamic future with equal justice for all.

NBC News drops former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel as contributor after backlash

NBC News has dropped former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel from her role as a paid contributor, mere days after her hiring was announced, following on-air objections from NBC and MSNBC journalists.

NBC News reported the decision was announced Tuesday in an email to staff by Cesar Conde, NBCUniversal Group chairman. "There is no doubt that the last several days have been difficult for the News Group. After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor," Conde said, according to NBC News.

"I want to personally apologize to our team members who felt we let them down. While this was a collective recommendation by some members of our leadership team, I approved it and take full responsibility for it," Conde wrote.

The network announced McDaniel's hiring on Friday, two weeks after she stepped down as head of the RNC. Network hosts and personalities, including Joe Scarborough, former White House press secretary Jen Psaki, Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow, used their time on air to protest management's decision to hire McDaniel, and urged the network to reconsider.

Puck News was the first to report that NBC News planned to drop McDaniel as a contributor.

Wallace said on the air that NBC's decision to hire McDaniel signaled to 2020 election deniers "not just that they can do that on our airwaves, but that they can do that as one of us, a badge-carrying employee of NBC News, as a paid contributor to our sacred airwaves," a sentiment echoed by other NBC talent.

"The fact that Ms. McDaniel is on the payroll at NBC News, to me, that is inexplicable," Maddow said on her show Monday. "And I hope they will reverse their decision."

Maddow said MSNBC staff "expressed outrage" after McDaniel's hiring was announced and that the network's executives heard, understood and "adjusted course."

McDaniel defended former President Donald Trump's efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election, and defended a November 2020 call in which she and Trump reportedly urged GOP canvassers in Michigan to not sign the state's certification of the presidential election.

McDaniel took on the role of RNC leader in 2017, the year Trump took office.

She stepped down to make way for Trump's hand-picked team to take over the RNC, as he cemented his status as the presumptive Republican nominee for president. Michael Whatley, who promoted Trump's false voter fraud theories, was voted in as national chairman, and Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, was voted co-chair. McDaniel herself was once hand-picked by Trump, but her favor among Trump allies waned as she was blamed for GOP losses in recent elections.

Layoffs at the RNC followed the election of its new leadership. More than 60 staffers were axed as the organization tries to streamline and "eliminate redundancies" between the campaign and the RNC, a senior Trump campaign official told CBS News earlier this month.
