Hacked and Smacked

Post by fecc-mechanic »

Turns out in the last 48 hours or so (presumably) Russian hackers have taken down servers worldwide. I have every 3hr backups, dailies, weeklies, and monthly backups spread across servers in various geolocations. They took out everything BUT the monthly backups. We are slowly but surely returning to live.
I apologize for the disruption in service, and I am doing everything in my power to resume normal services, my heart aches that we lost a month of content. But it is better than NO content.
Again, my apologies to all.

That's rough.

Do you not keep offline backups? Leaving everything online sounds risky, as demonstrated by this unfortunate outcome.

I actually have a copy of several threads saved over the past few days, albeit the uglier ones concerning bootleg titles and bootleg companies. Happy to supply them if that helps anything.

It has crossed my mind. But the cost of the medium and other associated costs kept it from happening. My thought process (as warped as they are) was that if I had backups in different countries the chances of them all getting hit would be (and is) miniscule. But. It happened. Much larger companies like Tesco in the UK had it rougher I heard. It seems the (again presumably) Russian hackers goal was to hit the largest amount of servers. Whether it's a giant like Tesco, or a nobody like me. As a form of "sanction" in rebuttal. All we can do now is hopefully move on. From all this craziness - Where cyber warfare has literally now hit home.

I don't think it's (all) down to hacking.

In 2021, Tesco did admit its systems had been hacked:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59027423

However, the more recent outage from a few days ago was blamed by Tesco on a software update (with Tesco taking heat from at least one expert quoted in the article for failing to properly do a software test before applying a live update to its system):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-68584235

Ditto, also, for McDonald's and Sainsbury's:

https://www.lbc.co.uk/opinion/views/outages-at-greggs-mcdonalds-sainsburys-and-tesco-what-the-hell-is-going-on/

Part of the issue is just simple human arrogance, laziness, and blunder. Beyond that, and also interacting with those factors, is that it is in the nature of complex systems for sub-components to fail, or to interact with other sub-components in unexpected ways, producing various glitches and sometimes (alas) catastrophic failures. I learned a little about this quite recently when I was reading about the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident that occurred back in 1979:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile_Island_accident
Normal accident theory

The Three Mile Island accident inspired Charles Perrow's Normal Accident Theory, which attempts to describe "unanticipated interactions of multiple failures in a complex system". TMI was an example of this type of accident because it was "unexpected, incomprehensible, uncontrollable and unavoidable."

Perrow concluded that the failure at Three Mile Island was a consequence of the system's immense complexity. Such modern high-risk systems, he realized, were prone to failures however well they were managed. It was inevitable that they would eventually suffer what he termed a 'normal accident'. Therefore, he suggested, we might do better to contemplate a radical redesign, or if that was not possible, to abandon such technology entirely.

"Normal" accidents, or system accidents, are so called by Perrow because such accidents are inevitable in extremely complex systems. Given the characteristic of the system involved, multiple failures that interact with each other will occur, despite efforts to avoid them. Events which appear trivial initially cascade and multiply unpredictably, creating a much larger catastrophic event.

Normal Accidents contributed key concepts to a set of intellectual developments in the 1980s that revolutionized the conception of safety and risk. It made the case for examining technological failures as the product of highly interacting systems, and highlighted organizational and management factors as the main causes of failures. Technological disasters could no longer be ascribed to isolated equipment malfunction, operator error or acts of God.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_accident
A system accident (or normal accident) is an "unanticipated interaction of multiple failures" in a complex system. This complexity can either be of technology or of human organizations and is frequently both. A system accident can be easy to see in hindsight, but extremely difficult in foresight because there are simply too many action pathways to seriously consider all of them. Charles Perrow first developed these ideas in the mid-1980s. Safety systems themselves are sometimes the added complexity which leads to this type of accident.
For a pop culture example, think of Jeff Goldblum's character, Dr. Ian Malcolm, warning everyone about the inevitability of systemic failure -- via chaos theory -- in Steven Spielberg's iconic "Jurassic Park". It's not all the fault of Russians; until, of course, it is. Just to be on the safe side, don't get drinking any vodka next to your computer for the near future!

Right, so, anyway...

As far as the "All Elvis" section goes, the search engine Bing presently returns a cached version of the first page of threads in the forum that goes back to March 18th, a day or two before this supposed "hack"/security breach took place:

Active URL:

https://mail.elvis-collectors.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1

Cached URL:

https://cc.bingj.com/cache.aspx?q=https%3a%2f%2felvis-collectors.com%2fforum%2f&d=4993690135773500&mkt=en-GB&setlang=en-GB&w=mabhY-T5mIje3kms3ZiADPGhyRFqE_rt

From there, it's at least possible to see the thread titles, and sundry thread data, like the thread starter, when the thread was created, number of replies, number of views, who last posted, and when the last post was made.

Unfortunately, I can only seem to find the first page, which covers roughly five days (from late-AM on March 13th to mid-PM on March 18th). And, of course, you can't actually see the contents of any of the threads (except what you've now restored -- up to a month ago). But maybe it would be useful to post this data as a big dump of text, as a spur to encourage fresh discussion and potential recreation of at least some of the now-missing threads.

Forgive the somewhat basic and ungainly formatting. It's very late here in the UK and I don't have the time to finesse it right now. This is a copy-and-paste job from the page coming up via the "Cached URL" link above. I've cleaned it up a little, but all the relevant thread data and attendant data categories, as mentioned above, are intact:

NOTE (1): There is a total of 50 (fifty) threads listed.
NOTE (2): All threads listed in descending time order.
NOTE (3): All supplied times and dates are in GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
NOTE (4): Threads that have been completely lost (i.e., threads created after Feb 21st 10:00 PM GMT) are highlighted in red.
NOTE (5): This list, of course, is not complete (i.e., it is only as complete as the first page of threads in the "All Elvis" section, which is the only relevant cached snapshot I could find).

A couple more, continuing the list, that were larger than a single page and have been entirely lost (default is 25 replies per page; or 24 replies plus opening post when talking about the first page):

This Is Elvis outtakes?

Again, this list is not comprehensive, since it derives entirely from a single cached snapshot of the first page of threads (default total of 50 threads). Moreover, threads created prior to the backup cut-off date of Feb 21st may have had many new replies added in the last month, and these will also have been lost. Still, I hope the list here gives a flavour of what was being discussed in the past five days (actually closer to nine days if you include the brief outage period), and the type of discussion topics that could be partially recapitulated.

Unfortunately, we lost a couple of hefty threads. Here are the top five lost threads, by reply count, in descending order:

Blame Elvis for not touring the world not The Col.

The King in the City of Six Flags
69 Replies, 2283 Views

Who are the persons in this picture August 10, 1970
43 Replies, 1432 Views

A couple more, continuing the list, that were larger than a single page and have been entirely lost (default is 25 replies per page; or 24 replies plus opening post when talking about the first page):

This Is Elvis outtakes?
41 Replies, 1355 Views

New Forum Cover Picture
28 Replies, 934 Views

Again, this list is not comprehensive, since it derives entirely from a single cached snapshot of the first page of threads (default total of 50 threads). Moreover, threads created prior to the backup cut-off date of Feb 21st may have had many new replies added in the last month, and these will also have been lost. Still, I hope the list here gives a flavour of what was being discussed in the past five days (actually closer to nine days if you include the brief outage period), and the type of discussion topics that could be partially recapitulated.
Thank you

Right, so, anyway...
Thank you
You're welcome, vinelvis!

Just doing my bit to help. I hate seeing data lost and people's input compromised.

Now, unfortunately, I'm out of time. If I find anything else of relevance, I'll post it in here later. Quite gutted to see those bigger threads gone, and to think of all the replies lost in various other threads, but life goes on -- even in the online world of EP.

One interesting little exercise, before I go, is to note the TOPICS and POSTS totals for the "All Elvis" forum (I confess I pay a lot less attention to the other forums) back on Sept 22nd 2023 -- almost six months ago to the day. A snapshot of the main page exists with this data on it, courtesy of the Wayback Machine:

https://web.archive.org/web/20230922090109/https://elvis-collectors.com/forum/

(The most recent snapshot dates to Oct 7th 2023).

Now, the numbers on that date, back in September last year, are as follows:

TOPICS = 48,147
POSTS = 1,160,001

POSTS to TOPICS ratio = 24.09

The numbers we have now, based on FECC just being restored to where it was a month ago (i.e., five months on from that date in September, in effect), discounting a handful of new posts that have already been made, are as follows:

TOPICS = 48,638
POSTS = 1,173,013

POSTS to TOPICS ratio = 24.11

Here are the "gains" (i.e., the surplus for each data item) over the past five months (Sept 22nd to Feb 21st):

TOPICS = 491
POSTS = 13,012

POSTS to TOPICS ratio = 26.5

So the gaining of topics and posts has remained fairly steady, but there has been a roughly 10% increase in posts compared to topics.

But what about the last month? How do the numbers look? If we assume a roughly linear progression from one month to the next in the cumulative gain of topics and posts, then we can estimate the losses for the past thirty days as follows (interpolated numbers):

TOPICS (lost) = 98
POSTS (lost) = 2,602

Or roughly 100 topics and 2.5K posts.

Of course, this says nothing about the subjective quality of those topics and posts, nor can it tell us anything about the data therein (e.g., text, photos, video links, newspaper clippings, data tables, etc.). The numbers also apply only to the "All Elvis" forum. The impact to private messages is also ignored here. But in terms of standard, publicly-available "Elvis Presley" discussion, this is a basic measure of what we've lost.

it's not a coincidence. Stay on topic and you're posts don't disappear. Especially in a circumstance of this magnitude.

If we lose a month of posts, Jordan, then we lose a month. The bulk of the site is back (thank you), and that's the key thing, plus we all know you have more than enough going on in your life without having to restore a month of posts here. Look after yourself first. Fecc members can survive without those lost posts.

One thing I would suggest, though, is setting up a social media account. It can stay idol for 99% of the time, but it would be useful in order to make an announcement to members when this kind of thing happens. Word would soon spread once someone saw such a message.

Jordan all of us appreciate what you're trying to do to get
things back to normal.

You probably already know that "pm's" are also missing from
this time period.

Just a few days back I mentioned the site might have been
hacked after some deletions from my private account. But
Mod3 seemed sure that I was wrong.
