Don't see the point to be honest.
Because Elvis-fanatics will buy it regardless, Sony knows that very well...

Which means much of the glory of the Memphis 69 recordings will be lost. They were recorded with the specific intention of being overdubbed. Undubbed in this instance means "half finished." Fine for FTD, but not for retail.

This is precisely what they did with the two Nashville packages, why would they break that pattern now?

So everyone's a record producer now? They've issued undubbed recordings numerous times before.

Cool cover, but a strange concept...

The concept seems pretty straightforward, a collection of all Presley masters recorded in Memphis (plus some bonus cuts).
But it is not a all recorded masters...

This Is The Story
A Little Bit of Green
My Little Friend
Inherit The Wind
I'll Be There
And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind
If I'm A Fool For Loving You
Who Am I
Girl of Mine
Mr. Songman
Thinking About You
Love Song of the Year

*Most* all.

SONY would not green-light a 6xCD set to add some of those dogs.

Apologies wasnt very clear, i meant i wonder how much he managed to improve the sound on the 50s recordings since they cant be remixed.

Literally hundreds of engineering hours went into the Sun material as issued on A Boy From Tupelo. That's the benchmark.

No way would the same amount of time and effort have been made in 2023-2024 on these recordings.

But there is a big difference in those two Nashville recordings and the American Studio recordings. As mentioned, Moman's intention was to add overdubs to sweeten the final recordings. There are several recordings from those '69 sessions that cry out ior overdub fills.

Who needs Inherit the Wing and This is the Story when you can have four and a half minutes of Elvis singing Hey Jude out of tune?

This dopey discussion point is older than your laptop, yet you drag it out again.

Willful ignorance is a weak rhetorical device.

  • Elvis' unplanned recording of "Hey Jude" is not "out of tune"
  • "Hey Jude," unlike your examples, was the #1 song of 1968 and regarded as a stone classic
  • The Beatles, who recorded and released "Hey Jude," are generally considered the greatest rock 'n' roll band of all time

The decision by the producers to include this seems so clear-cut you should write about it in your next book.

Your missing the point that PMP made. It was always the intention to use overdubs on those 69 sessions to complete the recordings and there are a few of the recordings that cry out for those overdubs as without them, the songs sound empty and unfinished and some of Elvis' vocals seem to struggle in places which is not so noticeable with the overdubs. If Jorgenson felt that remixes were appropriate, then they should have done them to the masters and offered the undubbed versions on a bonus disc as a comparison. They offered remixes on some of the Memphis Record release from the 80s so coould have done that for more of the recordings here.

Sony missed the opportunity of releasing a special 50th anniversary deluxe set for those sessions five years ago when they could have given us the original Quad mix or a new 5.1 variant on a BluRay disc, but decided to just release all the outtakes on the digital platforms only, and then felt a bit of a backlash from fans who wanted a physical release, and now it looks like they have missed the boat again by not only not offereing brand new mixes of the finished recordings which many fans have been calling out for, but by missing many of the recordings off the set too, but still including the really poor Hey Jude recording and the This Time medley thing.

Interested to hear the remixed masters and concert.
I wonder how much he managed to improve on the 50s tracks
You can't remix MONO recordings from 1953-1955.
And - YES YOU CAN - using DES.
Peter Jackson remixed mono soundtracks of 'Let It Be' for his Get Back series.

"And - YES YOU CAN - using DES."

You consistently post uniformed poppycock, you should just leave it on your website instead of sullying this topic.

For those who care, the time and money Peter Jackson put towards his Get Back documentary will never be done on anything involving Elvis Presley. SONY will not invest in this manner.

Furthermore, it wasn't "DES" that Jackson employed in his work.

He enlisted his production company, WingNut Films, to develop their own machine-learning “de-mixing” software capable of splitting up interlocked sounds. They also used a bit of the industry-standard audio-repair tool iZotope RX.

I wish they’d done the finished masters, not the undubbed ones. Whether you like it or not, this is presenting an unfinished work. Even lesser songs like love song of the year were made with overdubs. And songs like only the strong survive would sound amazing if remixed by MRS with overdubs

I'm wondering why you're only talking about undubbed masters. The stated running times (qobuz-link) rule this out for many tracks. It seems to be more of a mixture of outtakes and undubbed masters or unedited undubbed masters. See also the yellow sticker "Highlights" on the CD box.

I preordered on Amazon UK, its less than $50 delivered to the US

I love the 69 and JR sessions so I locked in the price now but might just end up cancelling as I really just want the 69 masters remixed WITH their respective overdubs

Yes, they have. But the nature of the Memphis 69 sessions are very different to those from June 1970 onwards. There are significant gaps where overdubs were due to be added. That is NOT the case from undubbed recordings of the 1970s. Indeed, Ernst stated in an interview many years ago that the Memphis 69 recordings were not suitable for an entry in the Essential Elvis series for that very reason. I'm sure someone out there even has the MAHM interview where he said that. Sadly, he has yet again rolled back on what was a very sensible position.
