The appeal of these recordings certainly does not lie in the musical quality of the performances, but in their uniqueness.
Whether eccentric or below-average, our man delivers shows that stand out from the crowd, deliver the unexpected and thus remain in special memory.
Every “Jumpsuit Junky” knows immediately what the Closing Show 1974 is all about. The same goes for Houston '76.
This certainly doesn't apply to other perfectly average run-of-the-mill shows.

In addition, everything from 1977 has a special appeal for many fans.
I can understand that.
After all, these are his last surviving recordings. And you can't get any more recent ones, which means they're the closest to the present day, without Elvis.
The musical quality of the 1977 recordings may be below average, I agree.
But for these very reasons I predict that the new FTD set will be one of the best-selling.
Beautifully stated and I agree 100%. :smt045 smt125 smt200 smt201 :smt041 :smt023

I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if volume 2 featured 7 incomplete shows from 24th to 30th March 1977

That would bring us 1977 over 4 volumes then?

Volume 1: February 12-21
Volume 2: March 24-30
Volume 3: April 21-May 3
Volume 4: May 20-June 26

Anyway: This raises the question if FTD is now emptying the vaults completely by releasing all the soundboards of all the concert years on "Complete tours" compilation CDs? The concept seems a bit like what FTD did earlier, when they released all the classic albums on FTD, by starting the Complete Sessions series.

Well yes- except you have put both the last 2 tours together as 1 volume

You are right but from the May 20 to June 2 tour only audience sourced recordings have been released so far. Probably FTD do not have that many soundboard sources to fill an extra volume.

I definitely appreciate the relative rarity of '77 recordings, hence the anticipation. And on many nights, Elvis was arguably performing better than he had for much of the previous summer. However, don't think I'll be grabbing this one. Had it been a well-curated one disc of "highlights", then I probably would have, although I haven't played Unchained Melody since it first came out.

I think this format of releasing more than three shows in one set is only applicable to the 1977 recordings, they didn’t record the opening numbers and intros so it would make it easier to fit two recordings on one disc. So I assume they’re just getting 1977 over and done with as quickly as possible with a handful of sets, rather than drag it out.

What I don’t get are the many people that seem to think these are good performances from Elvis and are excited for that reason.
You ever heard "Reconsider Baby" from 1977?

We don't "think" it's good, we KNOW it's good - totally awesome, in fact!

Yes I have. I’ve head all the bootleg and official soundboards that have been available.

Have you heard Reconsider Baby from 1969 or 1972? Those are awesome, the standard to which he could play. The 1977 performance is way below what he was capable of.

I always liked fever from the february 13th show, and with the footage its even better, elvis seems to enjoy his time on stage and is quite animated

Am I the only one in the room trying to figure out why Feb 20 is included when it was already released on "Unchained Melody" FTD while Feb 15th was excluded? I will have to keep my "Having Fun in Orlando" bootleg!

Perhaps Cisco or someone else who helps the FTD label can explain the reasoning behind this decision?

Probably because the balance of the recording is woeful and would sound out of place next to the other shows.

Anyone else wish we were given more bang for the buck and for the shows to be issued in the old 7” format with a 16 page booklet? I always feel short changed with the 5” digipack.

Woeful never stopped them from releasing stuff before. A disclaimer saying "historical importance was given priority" yada yada has been used before. I will give the boot another listen to see how woeful it sounds.

It would have been nice if atleast Big Boss Man, Help Me and My Way with its reprise would have been included from the 15th.

This is the end of the line for me! A remix of the Elvis In Concert album, along with other multitrack recordings made during the '77 tours would be a wiser way to somehow end what is coming to an end anyway!
