DAVID BOWIE Legendary Appreciation Topic
Hey folks,
David Bowie - Serious Moonlight, one of the best concert videos ever made, available in 480p but with a stereo audio soundtrack...
https://ok.ru/video/730626198052
Next is a filmed interview for TopPop, a Holland TV variety series at the Hotel de L’Europe in Amsterdam, on the 14th of October 1977.
_
After recording and mixing the “Heroes” material in July and August 1977, Bowie went on a 2-month promotional tour around Europe. He recorded performances and interviews for TV shows, shot the “Heroes” video and TV Ads, and he met with the press. It was unprecedented for Bowie to do so much promotion, especially since earlier in ‘77, he’d done virtually none for the Low album.
The tour started in the UK on September 7th, recording the Marc Bolan TV show.
The final leg of the tour began in Hilversum, Holland on October 13th, with a Gold Disc presentation and a performance of “Heroes” for the TV show TopPop (David Bowie • AVRO TopPop • October 13th 1977
The following day, Bowie gave interviews for the Dutch press in Amsterdam. Of all the filmed material from the tour, it is this almost uninterrupted 30-minute interview that gives us the most comprehensive view of the “Heroes” era Bowie. And in fact, it is one of the most substantial filmed Bowie interviews from the ‘70’s.

Re: DAVID BOWIE Legendary Appreciation Topic
just finished watching the 38 minute interview in amsterdam.
During it, David is presented with a gold record for his "Heroes"single and there after two young eight year old boys are on-set as they give him a picture book.
Interesting question right at the very end, where David's asked if he's playing Las Vegas to which he looks totally surprised and bemused. Sounds like the interviewer then builds and repeated the question "after Elvis died, will you be playing Las Vegas?"
Makes me wonder if he ever did play a show there?
Footnote: Thread title has been changed to "Appreciation topic" just now.
Hope to build this thread up with more of BOWIE the Legend in good time

Re: DAVID BOWIE Legendary Appreciation Topic
Just found this most interesting raw video of David's final australian show regarding his Serious Moonlight 1983 World Tour.
David Bowie - Serious Moonlight, SYDNEY
Am calling this "Serious Moonlight Sydney" as it follows exactly the same song sequence as Bowie's official Vancouver "Serious Moonlight" which was released officially back then.
Beyond "Fame" Bowie sings four more songs not included in the Vancouver video, however.
On the 20th November 1983, David Bowie performed his final Australian concert of the Serious Moonlight tour. This Betamax recording was taken from a sight screen feed made at that time.
The first couple of numbers, plus the end have some artefacts but, as it hasn't been viewed in nearly 40 years, the quality overall has held up well. The audio was in mono and has been remastered to bring it out more.

Trog601's story....
Back in 1983, I was working in a One-hour photo lab in Sydney and we would often have crew from the Sydney Entertainment Centre come by to drop off films to be processed. Over time I got to know some of the camera crew that were used to shoot the video that would be projected onto the sight screens at the side of the stage.
When Bowie came to Sydney, these guys were hired to do the same thing at the Sydney Showgrounds for his final two concerts. This was video only, as it was to be shown live on the side screens. However, I was told that for the final concert a Sony U-Matic video recorder was used to record the show with a mono audio feed from the mixing desk used for reference by the director. This was for personal use only. When I was told about this on the following Monday by one of their crew, I asked if it was possible to get a copy. The guy said that I could drop by with a VCR and make one, which I did (but with a Sony Betamax) the following day. Later when I saw one of the crew and thanked them again, he told me that the original tape had been lost and it was possible it had been recorded over (!!??) also, there were no other copies made. As such, I had the only video in existence.
The tape has been with me for 40 years and I finally got to having it transferred to digital file last year. I hope one day the tape can be restored to remove any artefacts and defects.
**20th November 2023 (40th anniversary of the concert)
I have been hunting around Sydney, trying to confirm if the original tape still existed and possibly be available for the 40th anniversary of the concert, unfortunately I can confirm the original is long gone. I did track down a member of the crew and he told me that one of the cameramen was caught in traffic that night, so they were short one camera for the early part of the concert. This is why there is limited footage of Earl Slick early on. Fortunately the cameraman did turn up for the remainder of the show.
No one is sure who made the recording from the feed but I for one am grateful they did and that I made a copy at the time.
The Band:
David Bowie – lead vocals, guitar, saxophone
Earl Slick – guitar
Carlos Alomar – guitar, backing vocals, music director
Carmine Rojas – bass guitar
Tony Thompson – drums, percussion
Dave Lebolt – keyboards, synthesizers
Steve Elson – saxophones
Stan Harrison – saxophones, woodwinds
Lenny Pickett – saxophones, woodwinds
George Simms – backing vocals
Frank Simms – backing vocals

Re: DAVID BOWIE Legendary Appreciation Topic
look at that !
David Bowie's Montreal concert on july 12, 1983 after all these years, is available officially in MONO. It had been bootlegged for years and prior to that, i do recall taping it back in 1984 from a radio FM broadcast!
David was at height of his "Fame" then!

The actual vancouver concert has in fact been remastered and seen a official release as 2 cd product in 2018.
You can check out the sound samples on the link below, one of the greatest of concerts.

Re: DAVID BOWIE Legendary Appreciation Topic
good summary over on wiki.
"The 13 July 1983 Montreal Forum performance was recorded and broadcast on American FM radio and other radio stations worldwide, and it was from this concert that the live version of "Modern Love" was recorded.[22] The concert on 12 September in Vancouver was recorded for the concert video Serious Moonlight, that was released in 1984 and on DVD in 2006.[22] There were discussions to release a live CD from these performances as well, but that idea was later discarded."

Re: DAVID BOWIE Legendary Appreciation Topic
jeez, what with 1983 rehearsals and soundboard concerts flooding online, most probably lifted from bootlegs, it's a wonder why the Bowie Estate and his record label doesn't produce an Elvis Aron Presley style box set (or close to) on David's 1980's material.

Re: DAVID BOWIE Legendary Appreciation Topic
here's another case in point.
Let's Dance demo. There may well be studio outtakes or alternate versions from his best selling album "Lets Dance" that they could use on a possible multi-disc.
