Best track on "Girl happy" LP 1965

Post by dreambear »

What do we have here? A strange mix regarding Elvis performances. On some songs like "The meanest girl in town", he actally attacks the song, but on some other tracks he sounds uninspired (Startin´ tonight), which lead us to the tracks that I have to exclude: Number one: "Fort Lauderdale chamber of Commerce". No question about that one. Impossible to get a hit record with a title like that. "Do not disturb" is the second track, with respect payed to Elvis himself. In "Careless love" you can read that Elvis almost exploded when he tried to record this song. He certainly didn´t like it.

The sound quality is the worst to date on an Elvis album. Any good songs? "Cross my heart and hope to die" is nice. The title track (even if the speed is too fast) is very catchy. Right produced, it could have been a hit in my opinion istead of "Do the clam". My wife who isn´t a fan but likes a lot of his songs, surprised me with loving "Puppet on a string". What about the bonus song? Not the best one from the 1962 Nashville sessions but the performance is splendid.

Anyway, no one of my all time favourites are on this album, but there are far worse soundtracks than this. I have a hard time to choose between "Girl happy", "Cross my heart..." and "You´ll be gone". Well just to surprise..I choose the second alternative.

Vote on!

Regards Björn

"Giiiiiirl happy, yes I'm giiiiiiirl happy, can't you see!
Girl happy! Girl, girl happy!"

Yes, I voted for the title song -- an easy choice. Like you, I'm sure it could have become a huge hit. It never fails to put me in a good mood!

shanebrown wrote:Out of the film songs it would be Cross My Heart, which I sort of decided I liked after Out In Hollywood produced the alt take. But I went for You'll Be Gone. I'm a Sinatra fan as well as an Elvis fan, and this thinly disguised take on Begin The Beguine means I can have it all ways!
What do you think of this album compared to his other soundtracks?

Girl Happy for me, and Jon Romanovitch's version is very good too!

I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

shanebrown wrote:I don't know, mate. Some days I love it, some days I hate it. I dont think it is anywhere near the poor quality of Kissin Cousins and Harem Scarum. On the other hand I don't listen to it in the way I do Frankie And Johnny - ie, on a regular basis. Do The Clam I could live without - along with Wolf Call and Spring Fever. I have a guilty love of Fort Lauderdale as I just think it's cute and catchy. I know I shouldn't like it, but hey!

In other words, I think there is a good 6 track EP waiting to escape from the LP! lol But there is a fair amount of dross, but I dont think any song hits the depths of KC, HS or PHS.
I will get nervous when we reach F & J, because that´s the album of Elvis that I have the hardest time to listen to, AND I don´t hate jazz. Just now I´m very into Van Morrison and especially his "Moondance" album from 1970.
